In the dead of night on an isolated stretch of road, the Highwayman waits for his victims, his prey, and there he robs them of their riches, sometimes their life, and sometimes a woman's virtue. On one spring evening, the Highwayman stops a coach where he steals the coin and jewelry of a young woman, and seeing how beautiful she is, he yearns to claim her as his own, but doesn't. He allows her leave unharmed. The Highwayman would become infatuated with her, obsessed, seeking her coach on the roads, yet never again would he see her.

Years later, the Highwayman is traveling alone, and foolishly he finds himself at the mercy of another. He is robbed at pistol point, and by none other than the young woman whom he is obsessed with...
