2. How do you know that your country does not torture people?  If the leaders of your country have the ability to keep secrets from you, then your knowledge of what they are doing is limited to what they choose to tell you. How then, can you be "safe" given your argument?

We were occupied not too long ago, and on top of that, my country isn't nearly as vast as the US - most people 30+ here can easily tell you what living in a country who does that feels like. There will be people who go "missing" or "commit suicide" on dubious basis, even later on when the practice of lining up people against a wall and semi-publicly shooting them. Things like that. Some things are hard to cover up neatly.

     As for me ... I know people fairly high up. In a way, *I* am a person fairly high up. In fact, I consider myself one of the prime targets if someone were to make an attack on us, which makes me even more inclined to condemn all such practices.

     Who makes the call of whether or not something is "moral"? You cannot be certain it'll be your moral. You cannot be certain they will not end up torturing and subsequently thousands of civilians and grunts who literally had no idea of anything to prevent one assassination of some person they deemed "more important".

      You'll never be completely safe, granted (and at the end of the day, you can still genuinely stumble and fall down the stairs, which is a far more likely to happen), but to actively endorse things like that? That's just calling a miserable end upon either yourself or the people you care about.

      Privacy (both that of people and institutions) is a difficult issue without the involvement of government-level institutional violent crimes.

After the election, Vladimir Putin is planing to effectively revive the KGB, according to the Russian newspaper Kommersant (cited by several western papers). They already have a state and security police of course, the FSB, but the new branch would have a much more active role, getting directly into pushing prosecutions and detaining suspects and troublemakers, much like the Soviet spooks used to do. FSB operates a bit like the CIA, it rarely takes direct control of a case that's being prepped for trial, more often it will offer "supporting information" and research from its own secret sources to the cops or prosecution staff.

The proposed name would be MGB - I think that's what KGB was called before it got its more famous name. There were a whole series of acronyms through the Soviet era: like they said in North by Northwest, "we're all in the same alphabet soup".  ;)

If the police were so worried about her getting further injuries they should have called the parents to come to the scene and restrained the girl carefully.  Slamming her into a wall, pepper spraying her, hand cuffing her and the rest is way beyond necessary.

Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh fires his long-term interior minister (and sometime policing boss), who's become infamous for his brutality and involvement in extra-judicial killings, disappearances, furthering torture and corruption etc - all kinds of junta police activities you could think of. The guy seeks asylum in - Sweden.

Persistent reports emanating from Banjul has it that Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh has unceremoniously fired his Interior minister Ousman Sonko one of his longest serving loyalists since he illegally seized power in 1994. He served as Inspector General of police and minister of Interior a couple of times. He was fired and reinstated a couple of times as Interior minister.  Mr. Sonko is a long serving security official who has been in the army since 1988 according to his resume outlined on the State House website. 

He has been known as the most brutal loyalist to Yahya Jammeh and has his finger prints almost on any case of enforced disappearances, extra judicial killings, torture and imprisonment of Gambian citizens. Mr. Sonko is one of Jammeh’s strongest pillars who had done everything to ensure that Jammeh stays in power. He allegedly orchestrated the killing of Almamo Manneh, the killing of the 40 Ghanaians, the killing of Deyda Hydara, the arrest and imprisonment of LangTombong Tamba, former IGP Essa Jesus Badgie and many other atrocities committed during Jammeh regime.

Mr. Sonko was also directly involved in the ordering of the killing of Journalist Deyda Hydara according to soldiers who were ordered to execute the assassination plan against Deyda Hydara. Ousman Sonko knows reportedly knows and carries Jammeh’s orders more than any other personnel in Jammeh’s regime. All the divide and alleged failed coups within the security forces were all allegedly masterminded by Ousman Sonko. Mr. Sonko has been replaced by Momodou A. Bah commonly known as M.A Bah. Mr. Bah was arrested and detained in the alleged failed coup orchestrated by former CDS Ndure Cham.

Mr. Sonko’s firing comes in the midst of heightened tension within Jammeh’s inner circles. There is alleged reports of disagreements and suspicion between Jammeh and his top generals. Reliable sources close to the State House indicated that Jammeh is facing intense pressure from the International community in holding his security personnel accountable for the killings of UDP youth leader Solo Sandeng and Solo Krumah. Jammeh is undoubtedly facing unprecedented challenges as he battles heavy handed political crack down on his political opponents. Jammeh faces elections for a 5th term this December.

I've read some articles where the writers have speculated that "Carlos Danger" ( gotta love that name ) may have wanted to get caught - ie. that it could have been either deliberate or unconscious self sabotage.  Just a little arm chair analysis on my part here, but if the word "danger" in his name was some sort of a tell, then perhaps it's an indication that he enjoyed the "danger" that he put himself in . Perhaps the risk of getting caught and potentially ending up in a deluge of hot water might have pushed a few buttons for him?
