Canadians
Communist

They both start with C, and have 9 letters. More proof!

I get the impression that Switzerland is more socialist than communist...

I wouldn't even say Switzerland is particularly socialist (despite the upcoming universal guaranteed income referendum and recent referendums of executive pay). If anything it's normally held up as an example of a moderately liberal (in the classical sense) state.

Scania is home to this lady, and I wasn't born in the trunk of some truck. *winks at Judy Garland*

Totally agree MacDonald's are communists. They always had a five-year plan for dominating the junk food market in a country or a region, so finally ->world domination.  ;D

Now to get us back on topic...

The Opium war was just about opium. In truth,  there were other elements to this such as concerns about being potentially colonized by westerners and the out flow of silver which was hurting the Chinese economy in very profound ways.

Tuthmose IV was so angry at Queen Hatshepsut for 'stealing' his crown that he made every attempt to obliterate her memory with the hope of denying her soul immortal life in the Underworld.

Whilst it is true that someone certainly went to a lot of effort to destroy any evidence of Hatshepsut's existence, there is almost no evidence to say for sure who it was. If it was Tuthmose, then he waited a long time as the defacing of Hatshepsut's image did not begin until twenty years into his reign. Furthermore, there is no evidence at all of any such resentment. By all contemporary accounts he got along quite well with his stepmother and used her time on the throne as an opportunity to receive the best possible training in matters of state as well as high quality military training.

The evidence seems to point to the culprit being someone a little lower in the social hierarchy, who had a reason to resent Hatshepsut's reign, but still high enough for no one to question if they claimed that the order to do so came from Pharaoh.

I really dislike the romanticized story of the birth of quantum mechanics (early 1900's is history, right?). Max Planck is considered by most physicists to be the father of quantum physics due to his solution to black body radiation in which he "quantized" energy levels by binning radiation energies for the purposes of calculation. He was not asserting that radiation could only exist at certain quantized levels, and he even fought the idea of quantization when Einstein jumped on it in 1905 with his publication on the photoelectric effect. Planck was a turd. A smart turd he was, but a turd nonetheless. Einstein was the first to really consider quantization as a part of the physical model rather than a mathematical tool. </endrant>

Another one is that ancient people thought death deities were evil. In truth, a number of them were seen as benevolent divinities who presided over an unpleasant but necessary and inescapable part of existence.

Hades was the nicest of the Greek pantheon...or at least the only Greek god who wasn't a complete asshole to mortals all the time.

Yeah, but compared to the rest of them he was like Ghandi.

ladia2287

True. When they weren't fighting with and/or seducing each other, they were doing everything that might possibly make Hell for the poor mortals who worshipped them

Not entirely, Haephestus was technically the nicest of them.  He rarely meddled in the affairs of men.  He was happy with his toys in the forge, doin' requests for the other Gods.  If the Gods misused his toys?  Not his problem.

The white Jesus with straight hair image. It's pretty much a huge lie that has stuck with us because of  medieval iconography.  Jesus would likely have brown skinned with more curly black hair if the people inhabiting the area at the time are any indication.

A very annoying myths:

Homosexual men being child molesters. ~shudders~ I can't even being to describe how annoying, insulting, hurtful, terrible, awful and simply wrong that is.

Sadly enough, it stuck. Still sticks to peoples minds now and then, even in the twenty-first century.

Oh don't worry about that, us white guys are also being painted with that brush, now.

[Edit] To clarify, not that it's a good thing, or even something that should happen, but that the pedo-net is now being cast even wider, to include all men.

Russians are the only people living in Siberia. In fact, there are a host of tribes of varying  ethnic classifications that live in the area commonly called Siberia who were there long before the Russian expansion.

Honest question:  By living in Siberia, would these tribes be, by extension, not be Russian?

Yeah, you're right of course passport-wise.  Lux means ethnic Russians.
