Some say they don't make them like they used to.  Some disagree, but whatever the case, regardless of our ages, we all have video games that will always hold a special place in our hearts and memories.

I could go on and on, but I'll just name a few from the "older days" that I'll always remember fondly.

1.  The Legend of Zelda - The first and second ones for the NES.  I have to say I probably enjoyed 2 better than one, but no Zelda game to this day has quite captured the magic of those first two games.

2.  Metroid - Despite hours of frustration, this is in my opinion one of the golden classics.  Tons of weapon upgrades and a long amount of gameplay made this a gem.

3.  Ultima 7-Ultima 9 - Man, I can't tell you how much fun I had with Ultima games (this was before Ultima Online).  7 was awesome and 7 part 2 was even better.  8 introduced elements like live action voice overs that was pretty cutting edge for it's time.  9 had a lot of bugs but I got to play the Avatar in a fully 3D Brittania for the first time ever.

4.  The Quest For Glory Series - Put out by Sierra Games, these were point and click games with great stories and just the right hint of humor (Gnomish 'good humor bar', I'm looking at you).  Plus it was awesome that you could bring your old character from previous games into the newer ones.

5.  The Leisure Suit Larry Series - Everything from Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, Passionate Patty in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals to Love for Sail... the recent games in this series weren't so great, though (in my opinion).  They were "adult" games that weren't pornographic... just dirty with a touch of humor that I loved.  Yeah, I probably shouldn't have been playing these games when I was underaged, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one.   ;)

I'd love to hear about others' nostalgia.  :-)

Oh dude, I have to send you Spoony's Ultima Retrospective x3 you'll get more out of it then I did. Let's just say, his tagline for the U9 review is 'Betrayal'.

Let's see - I have a soft spot for the old Infocom text games (I grew up with an Apple ][+ - we didn't have many games) and the original Lemmings.

I've recently been replaying the very first Might and Magic title (almost have all of the overworld explored!) and plan to go on with those titles as long as my machine will cope.

Um - anyone remember Lode Runner (Broderbund) and Jumpman (Epyx)?

I think I had Lode Runner...

Nostalgia don't seem to work on me, though. I remember, vaguely, games I would play on the Sega Master System (Genesis for you barbarians in America) and the Nintendo 64, but every time I've gone and tracked those games down, they don't have any mystical curtain about them. I tend to judge them the same as if I just now discovered them.

And they don't do well xD Maybe it's because back then I was just a little kid hammering at buttons until the sheer amount of attempts dictated that I make some kind of progress on pure chance. My actually substantial experiences (when I started playing for real) started with the Xbox. So maybe that's conditioned me towards modern gaming in the same way people can get rose tinted glasses for the older stuff.

I don't have nostalgia.

I mean, yes, some old games were hella fun!  Supermetroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2 (AKA FF4 in Japan), Final Fantasy 3 (AKA 6...), Blaster Master...

But really?  The technology has gotten so much better, and no longer do or can they have to rely on high difficulty curves to keep you playing longer than the game actually lasts (For example, Blaster Master takes no more than an hour if you don't die.)

But let's face it, the old games got us here, and we should honour them by playing them from time to time.

And so, I'm going to play Legend of Zelda: Link to The Past again.  And maybe a little Chrono Trigger again.
My O&Os Peruse at your doom.

So I make a A&A thread but do I put it here?  No.  Of course not.

Also, I now come with Kung-Fu Blog action.  Here:  Where I talk about comics and all sorts of gaming

TentacleFan

Older games I really loved? I can think of some that I really have fond memories of to this day. I do think there are good and bad games today and there were good and bad games then too. It's just that the ones that were great tend to be the ones that get remembered.

TFan's Old School List

Final Fantasy (1, also 2 (Japan's 4) and 3 (Japan's 6) - Is what made me love RPGs and helped grow my love of Fantasy
Various Quest Games (Sierra) Police Quest, King's Quest, Quest For Glory, among others. - Great Humor and Just a lot of fond memories trying all sorts of things.
Megaman & Megaman 2 - Tough but fun with lots of weapon possibilities from the bosses weapons you'd acquire.
Super Mario Bros. 3 (Could probably include Super Mario World in there as well. - I'm not really a Nintendo fan these days but back then I loved these games.
Street Fighter 2 - Gave me a love of fighting games that continues to this day whether I'm good at them or not.

I could probably list a bunch more but these are some of the first to come to mind.

I'm going to take my time. I have all the time in the world. To make you mine. It is written in the stars above.

Nice to see that there are some other Spoony fans in here! :D

I played a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when I was a kid. I got a total nostalgia slap in the face when Sonic 4 came out and it had a lot of the same elements and bosses as back then.

Pokemon is also another big one. Sometimes the smell of Fall triggers a thought or two of the old games as I played them a lot outside during that time.

There is also a little-known game that I remember being one of my favorites for the NES. It was called Videomation. You could draw and animate things and it was fantastic. Probably the first drawing program of it's kind. At least that I played. :)

The old Apple green-screener games also poke at my nostalgia, but not enough that I can remember their names, sadly enough. I think I remember enjoying the original Math Munchers. *laughs*

I never got into video games with people in them but my brother had an Atari I played with that got me addicted to Break Out and Pong and Space Invaders.  Later on I found Magic Ball a more complex block breaking game.  It was on a computer that died and I couldn't rescue it but last month I found it online and downloaded it and I'm in heaven.

I am a sucker for nostalgia.  ;D

The Super Mario Bros. games were great, especially the first and third in the series. Spent a lot of hours playing it on the good old Nintendo. :-) The Tex Murphy games were great, and still are. Thanks to GOG.com I can still play them. The Pandora Directive is an amazing game, pure and simple. Also, the early versions of Football Manager/Championship Manager. Spent a lot of time on those, especially the 97/98-season. Also, a text based manager gamed we just called Pcliga was great. You couldn't get much more basic, but still loads of fun. And Winter Games of course, the Summer Games as well, great fun.

Aaah, nostalgia.  :D

My first videogame memories were on the Atari 2600 (yes I'm ancient lol). I remember playing stripped down versions of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Jungle Hunt, among other arcade classics and loving every minute of them.

Next was Commie 64, where I was floored with Defender of the Crown, and more than amused with this little game called Forbidden Forest... *giggles* it was the first overtly violent game I played, and it was so gruesome it was hilarious. And the music was epic. Games like Neuromancer and Impossible Mission("Stay awhile... staaaay foreeeever!") rounded out that era for me.

Then with the SNES I was introduced to the awesomeness that is the classic JRPG. And yes, they really DON'T make them like they used to. Final Fantasy 4 and 6(2 and 3 in the west, at the time), Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana... my goodness those were some good years of gaming. I am still trying to forget Secret of Evermore, though. *shudders*

I guess the last era I would consider as more nostalgia than modern gaming would be the early 3D consoles, such as N64 and PS1. And the Sega Saturn, although the 3D was meh at best, it had some of the best games of the time, imo. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, Astal, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighters Megamix, Guardian Heroes... I really could go on, and that was just the Saturn. Twisted Metal blew me away at the time on PS1, as well as Suikoden 1 because of the music, and Wild Arms 1 as the first rpg with 3D battles(nope it wasn't FF7 lol). WA1 had an amazingly awesome anime intro as well.

Damn... I could probably go on but that's enough nostalgia-gasming from me for the time being, lol.

I remember Secret of Mana!  Fat, bouncing bunnies that would bite your head!

Rabites! *gigges* Yes that was definitely one of my favorites, as well.

Oniya

Now I'm remembering another one - Illusion of Gaia.  Probably the first video game to bring Angkor Wat to the awareness of Americans.

I loved that one too... I don't remember Angkor Wat, tho.

There was also a sort of sequel to that game called Terranigma... I always get depressed when I play that one, heh

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Super Mario Bros. 2 (oh god the key-guarding faces OH GOD). Also SMB 3.

ActRaiser

Streets of Rage 2

Mario Kart 64

Warcraft 2

Thief: The Dark Project

Joust

I've played a LOT of games over the years, but I think those are the only ones that would make me nostalgic seeing/playing them again.

Oh! Another one that will get you major cookies with me if you've played it and loved it as well-

Landstalker for Sega Genesis.

I LOVED this game when I was growing up. I have scarcely met people who even know what it is. Which is sad, because I think it was one of the best games on the system. The opening sequence and the music when you wander around the large tree that becomes a dungeon later totally brings back a wave of nostalgia.

It was the place where the enemies had heads that would raise up on long necks when they were about to fire at you.  Never saw the sequel, but from your description, I think that's a good thing.

I don't believe it was ever released in North America. I only learned of it years later through the magical wonders of emulations. But it just has this really depressing ambiance... the world feels really empty to begin with, then on top of that, in the opening moments of the game, the main character screws up and unleashes something that freezes everyone else in place, leaving him truly alone in the whole world. Gah... so depressing, lol...

Koren

I have such weird nostalgia for games. Most of mine were more common, and concidering I've recently definitely gotten back into retro gaming and all of that its more nostagia I had as opposed to have but I've just got a few games that I remember so well
That and the fact that only being young compared to most on this site, and my first console being a playstation 1, a lot of my games are more new, and not so much the arcade style that a lot of others know.

Tomb Raider
The original tomb raider was brillant. Before she had the big boobs, and the long hair, when she was an explorer not a sex symbol. The mechanics were amazing and genuine puzzles that actually were fun and difficult to solve. That and the first level with that damn bear that still scares the shit out of me every single time in the village. Ah, good old memories. That and the fact that I loved, LOVED the tile based platforming. Platforming today is way to leaniant and easy, and studying game design I realise just how much effort went into the mechanics of tomb raider and fine tuning them to such a degree. Getting all the secrets in place and having such open wild levels so easy to follow through. Really it is just a magnificent game and still a massive challenge to date.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos
A kids game but DAMN it was so much fun. The funny thing is it has the exact same mechanics as tomb raider, just simplied for kids, but damn it was just as hard. We were talking about it at uni today and I swear anyone that had played that game remembers the tune for the twisty tunnels, and I played it and half my uni (mostly 19-25 year olds) were whistling away to it in joy. Love that damn crocodile. (That and the fact that I actually still have my original playstation 1 disk for this and tomb raider)

Abe's Odessy
The only thing I can say about this is after all these years I still know every single one of the sound effects and little things he said and enjoy mimicing them A LOT.

Metal Gear Solid
I think this one kinda goes without saying for those who played it. Psycho Mantis.
If theres one thing the metal gear series did perfect it was its boss battles
Off topic but im curious if anyone here played MGS3, and what they thought of the boss battle of The End?

Thats all I can think of for now but I'm sure I'll be going through something one day and find something and it will trigger my memories of something else i playe dand loved
