From the 90s to the 2010s, violent crime in the USA fell. Social scientists analysed it while more and more people just came to celebrate it. However, it was not to last. By 2025, violent crime was once more soaring and a number of factors were quoted as responsible from a major financial crisis to the near eradication of the welfare state to overpopulation by immigrants to various new street drugs. However, whatever the reason, even as the USA began to pull itself out of financial collapse it face a massive wave of public violence.

Extreme measures were needed, and taken,the most extreme of which involved the penitentiary system. Overwhelmed by a surging prison population and repeatedly embarrassed by a recidivism rate that proved the system was completely ineffective, new solutions were needed. The most bizarre of these was the return of gladiatorial combat with the penitentiary system hosting games where prisoners would fight to the death. Shockingly, the public got behind the system, eager for anything that would get the blood off the streets and as televising and selling tickets for gladiatorial games turned what was a bleed on public resources into an incredible profit-making venture, "the Penitent's Arena" took a firm hold in the public mind and the legal soul of the nation. It became the most watched sport in the nation and the only combat sport anyone cared to follow.

This role-play will take part in Poughkeepsie Rural Correctional Facility, a relatively new penitentiary in the state of New York. It will follow day-to-day life in the Penitentiary as well as the weekly and special fighting events. The following roles are available.

Staff: I will be playing the Governor, but all other staff positions are available.

Prisoners: Male and female prisoners are held at the prison and all are used in the sport. Prisoner characters have a reasonable chance of dying and an almost certainty of being injured. The best ones are also media celebrities, of course. To balance the potential for losing such a character, I will allow re-rolling of prisoner characters as needed and any player who plays a prisoner may also elect to play one staff member so they have a continuous character.

Peripheral characters: Family, friends, visitors, the media... I am open to any of these being used by a player as a minor character/NPC. If you want to play media members etc please discuss with me first.

If you would be interested, please let me know here or by PM. I am looking for a minimum of four players, even assuming they mostly play both a staff member and prisoner.

Slight addition: lest anyone wonder where the sex comes in, don't fear. Even today, prison has a sexual undercurrent. Between prisoners forming relationships with guards and prisoners, exchanging sexual favours for advantages and outright being raped, there is a lot of opportunity for sex. The arena too will have a sexual element. Social mores regarding sex will have been loosened and most combatants will fight in revealing armour or some naked. Some events will have the loser fucked by the winner for ppv. Certain "favours" may be afforded popular gladiators. Also, I may end up pimping certain inmates to interested members of the public. Gladiators, after all, will be the sporting celebrities of their time... Even if they are also dangerous sociopaths.

I'm more interested in fights, torture and humiliation than on vanilla sex... I hope you'll put this game in some Extreme, or at least NC forum?

It can only go in Extreme as it will involve killing. Vanilla sex may or may not occur. That's up to individuals. I strongly suspect it will not be common in such an abusive atmosphere.

Virtually any melee weapons might be used. Most likely, anyone who sets up a new prisoner will get handed random gear while those who set up an established gladiator will be able to select being noted for use of certain weapons. Even then, however, there will be bouts where they are given other weapons either to demonstrate their skill and versatility or because the fight organisers (each governor with media and public input) feel like being dicks. In extremely rare cases missile weapons might be provided, but these are limited strictly to cases where a prisoner has acted out so bad they want him or her dead. That last option will not be used against players without prior arrangement, but they may be expected to execute visiting gladiators at times.

Well, given one friend who spoke to me personally, that would seem to be three female prisoners. Any males? Any staff? Let me know if interested. I'm particularly intereted in a staff member who would be responsible for ring the training.

Sounds good, Primark. I'll draw up a character sheet and open a Character Registration/OOC thread tomorrow. Just a reminder, as prisoners have a good chance of dying or being seriously injured you guys have permission for the following:

1) You may run a staff member as well as a prisoner if you wish (personally, I'll probably run a prisoner and the warder, together with needed NPCs)
2) If a prisoner character dies, or is injured in a way so as to make them uninteresting to their player, that player may create a new prisoner.

I am very interested in fulfilling one of the staff roles, perhaps a lady guard to keep a check on the female trouble makers in captivity? That is if there are still different correctional facilities for the genders. With that being said, I also have no qualms playing a similar role for a mixed jail/male jail (as a female guard, of course).

The pens are now co-ed both in terms of staffing and prisoner population. As a note, sometimes battles in the arena are mixed too.
