Newbie looking for Star Wars or Shadowrun games

I'm a little rusty on Shadowrun but I remember the basics. I love that it has always felt like a game that is open to a ton of player/gm creativity. Willing to adapt to games in progress.
Preferred race: Orc
Preferred class: willing to negotiate on this.


I'm hoping to find a small Star Wars game to give me the chance to finally dip my toes in (I only know what I've read)
Preferred "race": droid
Preferred class: tech specialist but I guess my owner can program me to do what they need....
Being a droid basically means I belong to someone, right? So they can drag me along for a lot of the story tell me what to do while I provide quirky droid commentary?

These don't have to be "adult" oriented, it just seems like this forum gets more attention.

  I'm pretty overbooked on GMing right now, but I would like to second your request for Shadowrun and Star Wars.  Personally, I favor the Saga Edition of Star Wars and the 4th and 5th editions of Shadowrun.  (Especially 5th.) 

  The Scavanger's Guide to Droids is great resource for playing droids.

Lately I have been working on a campaign for Star Wars set in the immediate aftermath of Palpatine's death where the rebel alliance leadership also gets gutted but am still working on it.

Legacy Era, Knights of the Old Republic era, or New Jedi Order era? 

The last would probably include Yuuzhan Vong antagonists.  (Spelling?) 

Powerful teenagers trying to get started in the galaxy?  Or characters experienced enough to be jedi knights? 

An old campaign i was never able to run?  Or something new?

  I have hard copies of all of these books--digital too--but it's really nice to have it all in one place.  For on line games I like to make google drive sheets and use links to this sight so that I have the information for every ability right there at my fingertips.

I'd like to try SR out, although I'm a bit cautious about it. My one attempt at 5e left me with an impression that the system discourages not specializing extensively, at least early on, while the setting makes me heavily gravitate towards a polymath sort of character.

What sort of character were you thinking about?  You’re not entirely wrong… a Magic or heavily cybered warrior character requires a lot of investment in getting those, so you’ll want to use what priorities are left to make sure you can fully use your main focus. 

On the other hand, take a look at, say, the Weapon Specialist, who has A and B in skills and attributes and covers a broad range. Also, as a human, has an Edge of 5, providing a big boost to whatever skill they attempt.  That could be a former Company Man, private eye, any tough and skilled mundane.

The issue being that meaningfully interfacing with own gear requires rigging while meaningfully affecting hostile gear requires decking, and simply having relevant technical skills doesn't seem to do anything, because lower end hardware (like ye olde toolkits, testers, engineering tablets and so on) doesn't appear to exist or does nothing.

That's a tricky concept, since most Shadowrun play is on a tight enough timeline that there isn't any time for custom construction and the gear damage rules aren't usually used either, outside of having a weapon or device bricked by hacking.

The Rigger book goes into more detail on build/repair skills regarding vehicles.  Installing different upgrades requires different levels of tools, the Kit, Shop or Facility (core rules, 443 abstracted by skill type it works with).
