I can't blame you at all. 4th Edition and I don't get along for a whole catalog of reasons. :P But the Neutral Good-love-everyone adventurer in me likes the idea of good drow being forgiven. :-)

I pretty much discarded the new FR books for this along with a myriad other reasons. What they did to the Realms was.. hideous.

I heard, and, you know, completely baseless speculation so grain of salt and all that, that 4e was designed with some of the more WoW-like systems in mind to try to appeal to that sort of gamer.

Actually tis not that baseless. Look at the way they addressed the classes. blaster, tank, crowd control and so on. It WAS built to be based off a MMO.

I picked up the books.. looked them thru and between they initial way they did multiclassing, the 'enchanting rules' which smacked a LOT of what I was grinding thru in wow at the time (magic powers you get from 'disenchanting' magic items?)

Slywyn

Oh. Well. I guess that makes more sense then.

I'd just heard it and I hadn't seen anything to back it up(And I've never played so I have no idea if it's true or not) so I didn't want to state it as fact if I wasn't sure.

For while I went without.. then pathfinder game out.. and I've been playing that now.. I know a LOT of folks who either switched over or stayed at 3.5.

Ironically the folks at Wizards put out a reprint of 3.5 and advanced dnd (I got this.. the 'Gygax memorial set'.. nice.)

In a way he reminds me of Lu Bu from Romance of the Three Kingdoms... Which reminds me I need to finish reading that so I can order the second book...

But back on topic.... For a favorite race, I've always favored more beastial races where a stand alone individual could shake off the binding of his race and become something more. Of those I've always loved Minotaurs and Half-Dragons second.... Spell wise I got into more after my brother gave me his copy of the Elemental Evil book a lot of good evil spells in that book that I've used for my one character. He was an elven necromancer that had some levels as a monk due to the fact that a monk had got snowed into my character's tower for a winter. As for alignment I never payed much attention to.. I've never been good at choosing, so I just play my character how I see him and the DM has to tell me what I've been playing. I do stay away from Lawful Good though, I like money way to much to turn down awards...

I have always been partial to Mystra as a deity although I do love Lolth as well for some reason. Classwise I thought that the Warden class fit my Minotaur best....

Realmwise I like Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms... The only Greyhawk I've looked at was the Jusitcar books from Paul Kidd and I found them hilarious, but I do like weird parties.... I mean the Justicar with a sentient hellhound pelt, his apprentice, an adventurer who ends up being reincarnated into a talking badger, a sphinx who just happens to be in love with the apprentice and a fairy that has been banned from how many dimensions for wearing way to skimpy of clothing and has a lich staff and a wand that cocks like a shotgun....

Hmmm... I've never though of a minotaur as a player race before! :D I'm a little scared of them since I had a run-in with Baphomet. Not a nice guy! >:)

Ooo, I'm really scared of Lolth! :o I'm not sure why exactly. Possibly because I hate spiders. Plus the submissive in me gets a bit nervous at the thought of a severely matriarchal society. :-\ Also, let's face it, she's not a very nice person. I don't want to be turned into a drider! :o

I really need to look up Dragonlance. I hear of it all the time, but I know absolutely nothing about it! ;)

I'd love to help Slywyn, but I'm not quite ready for a threesome (in the wholly platonic sense of the word, of course) yet. ;) I'm trying to start slow so I don't over-commit myself. :-) It's so easy for me to get carried away and sign up for way to many threads. ::)

If the two of you would like to start one, I say go for it! :D From what I've seen of Falstaff's posts, he's an awesome RPer! ;D

Hmmm... the Isle of Dread? Sounds almost Ravenloft-ish. I wouldn't be that lucky, though. ;)

Isle of Dread was a module way back in like 1981 or about there somewhere.
Based in DnD land.

Slywyn

From what I can gather reading around(And most of this is from a blog post made in May, so a lot may have changed since then) DnD Next seems to be bringing back a lot of the "Classic" DnD. Fighters and Rogues are more-or-less back to the equivalent of Auto-attacking an entire fight, while spellcasters get a bunch of spells. However when they run out of spells, they still have access to 'basic' spells that they can cast as often as they like(Or whenever they want).

Monsters and players no longer have powers, the battlegrid is gone, and a lot of the more tactical combat is gone.

The way the blog guy described it is more like DnD 3.75 and less like DnD 5. There's not much innovation and a lot of going back to how things were before.

Isle of Dread was a module way back in like 1981 or about there somewhere.
Based in DnD land.
Isle of Dread was a sandbox adventure set in a Lost World style island recently rediscovered by an ill-fated voyage. It described local culture, environments, mystery, and logical encounters in an era where every other adventure was a slog through small interconnected rooms with nonsensical monster placement. B1, In Search of the Unknown, did not even have monster placement. Every room was empty with minimal description and blanks for you to add your own monsters and treasure. Compared to these, Isle of Dread was a masterpiece. It still stands on its own legs 30 years later, after so many decades of evolution in game design and storytelling, after so many authors have left their mark and indelibly left their mark on D&D.

I have played or run Isle of Dread more than a dozen times.

It left such an impression on me that the BECMI edition of D&D will always be one of my favorites, and the Mystara setting will always be special to me. Maybe it's because I enjoyed BECMI so much that I have come to love 4E. I both DM and play 4E. I was going to reply to the thread yesterday, but got distracted with a 4E game we play in the evening. I have another one on Tuesdays, and on Thursdays I run a 4E game of my own.

Could we stop the edition bashing? There is nothing more poisonous and divisive to the D&D community. Play the edition you prefer and enjoy it without feeling the need to trash something else. It is perfectly possible to have fun with 4E and there is nothing wrong with that. You don't even need to worry about the direction that D&D is going anymore. Clearly 5E is unlearning all of the lessons of 4E and reverting to 3.x design, for better or worse.

I'll admit the majority of my experience with the Dragonlance setting comes from Weis and Hickman and my Draconomican books. Where the Forgotten Realms had a big focus on Elven races Dragonlance has more Dragons which are some of my favorite creatures... (Half of my tattoos have to do with dragons the others are my totem, a gargoyle and Anubis.) I also gained more of a love for Kender....

Now that I think of it, I do enjoy the Yuan-Ti races as well although I have yet to actually play one. With the right DM I believe anything could be made into a good player race if you want to work at it.

Well, as I said that blog post about Next(where I got most of my information on it) was from May. So very likely changes have been introduced. From what I gathered the author really liked 4e, and his comment was that those who did like 4e were likely going to be stuck standing out in the rain when Next comes.

However, it's entirely possible that Next has evolved or shifted directions since then. It's been months, and that's a long time especially in game development.

The open beta sort of thing is still ongoing, so if you want to see it for yourself or maybe even try to leave your mark on the new system, there's very likely still time left to do so.

I was in it. No one here was interested in playing, I was getting more into Pathfinder Society play so I didn't keep following it.

QuotePlaying DnD doesn't really seem like it'd be fun with one person though. Seems like it's made to be a group game.

It seems like its hard to find certain things here, like less popular fandoms or those who want to play with non humans.

As for 4th....yuck. Just no. I read some and just no. I am staying with 3rd and 3.5. That and I can't afford the new stuff nay way and its near impossible to find the new stuffed used for cheap so Im sticking with the older editions.

I would love to find a place I can down load the older Dungeon 2ned issues for free since its damn near impossible for me to find them. Used to be able to get downloads of the older Dungeon issues from Wizards D&D site but they took all the older stuff down and now you have to pay for a subscription to get anything and its all 4th ed an way

It seems as though Next is not really being shaped by playtests, and that the playtests are instead a preview and means of marketing 5E. The ability for playtesters to provide feedback is extremely limited, and the feedback polls took a quick nosedive into realms of no consequence. With no real way for players to communicate their experiences and the gates thrown wide open for hundreds of thousands of people to playtest, it would be very difficult for WotC to learn anything at all from the process.

You might learn whether you like 5E by playtesting, though. So I guess it's really more of a mass test drive.

Slywyn

Oh yes. =p

I have some rather odd kinks and it's been difficult to find someone to play with them.

But Falstaff has been kind enough to set up a little simple module with me, and I'm going to get to try my hand at a 'learner's' game of DnD for the first time. It's shaping up to be potentially a lot of fun and I'm really excited about it.

Came up with a character and everything.

My only snag was that I found a character generator online, but it was rather... convoluted. It worked, and fairly well, but I'm wondering if anyone knows any that might be a little bit better.(and free)

Oh. =( That seems kind of unfortunate.

I hope they find some kind of middle ground where everyone can be happy.

Oh, okay! Thanks for explaining the Isle of Dread to me! :D It sounds like a really neat adventure! ;D

I'm sorry if I offended you by expressing my dislike of 4th Edition. :-( I certainly didn't mean to, and perhaps I could have been more tactful. I think all D&D fans have a favorite edition, and it's only natural that we express our likes and dislikes on a thread meant to be a place where we can discuss D&D and our experiences with it. :-) Speaking for myself, I would have no objections to anyone saying that they like 4th Edition best, or saying that they couldn't stand 3/3.5 Edition. If you like 4th Edition, more power to you! :D We're all different, and we can agree to disagree. ;D Again, I'm sorry if I offended you.

That is the complaint I kept hearing here. A LOT of folks recall the amount of feedback the felt their input on the Pathfinder beta was given. That feedback isn't there in DnDNext. Not saying that there isn't, just that it wasn't SEEN.

Slywyn

They do point out in the Next FAQ that while all feedback is considered they won't comment on it or reply to anyone specifically.

True.. hence my saying the 'perception' was that they weren't being paid atttention to..

Part of that is due to Wizards past actions I think. I hear a LOT of complaints about the 'PDF blight' where folks lost access to all legal copies of stuff they bought in a mere two days (I know at least 3 service men who lost access because they were overseas at the time and lost HUNDREDS of dollars in purchases.. ) and things like Gleemax and the 'digital subscription' that was required to use Wizards online assets. (I don't know if the latter is true as I have been on the wizards site about 3 times since 4e came out)

I do know that compared to other companies.. Wizards' customer service has sucked.. I got folks who are trying to get stuff ordered right who had to send the packages of stuff BACK before they got their own order. I know that one store tried to get certified for some sort of company rep gig.. who had to start the process ALL over because they relocated 50 yards to a rental space with MORE  square footage. I know a lot of folks were upset with the changes in the open game license because they wanted to do their own multi platform game setting and couldn't do it. (they explained it.. I didn't quite get the problem.. )

Perception is a big thing. I know a LOT of store owners weren't happy with the initial release of 4e for reasons like they (and their comic suppliers) had to pay a fuller cost than.. oh Walmart (I was told that Walmart got to pay HALF the cost of the box set that the FLGS paid through their suppliers like Diamond)
