Welcome to Line County, the city so poor that after the city went bankrupt it's creditors when bankrupt. The city so poor they don't even put it on maps. The state of California just pretends that Line County doesn't exist. Ten years ago the state of California government passed an amendment that struck Line County from the records books. They don't send funding to it, they include it in any census, they are so ashamed of it's existence that they don't even ask for help to fix it.

Okay, I'm sorry if I'm being nit-picky about things, but I'm still trying to get a handle on this place.  Is all the above to be taken literally?  As much as I'd love to live and work in a place like Line County, the fact of the matter is that I need a paycheck now and then for incidental expenses, like the electric bill and car insurance.  And while I might be okay with putting people in jail for free, I'm pretty sure there aren't many lawyers who would work in the proscutors office (or anywhere else) without a pretty hefty salary involved.
What a shame -- The money you spent on those tattoos could have gone toward a boob job.

To answer the bolded question. Sure why not... Yes, pretty much. If you look at places like Detroit (real life) you'll see where all government employees, school teachers, police, fire, everyone.. had to take massive pay cuts in some cases going without pay checks periodically but people stayed at their jobs because there is no other work in the city.

This former city (Line County) is worse off then Detroit. It's like all of the bad things in Detroit and LA combined. I've been saying that from the very start.

There are actually other cities besides Detroit in the US that are just as bad as I'm describing. These would be the cities that went bankrupt before Detroit.

*Note: I added the little part about writing them off the map and stuff because it adds some flavor to the desperation of the people living here. After all it's RP, it just adds to the drama.

Quote~ http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/07/18/detroit-isnt-alone-the-u-s-cities-that-have-gone-bankrupt-in-one-map/

All told, 8 cities and towns have filed for bankruptcy since 2010 — and two of the filings were rejected:

-- Detroit
-- San Bernardino, Calif.
-- Mammoth Lakes, Calf. (Dismissed)
-- Stockton, Calif.
-- Jefferson County, Ala.
-- Harrisburg, Pa. (Dismissed)
-- Central Falls, R.I.
-- Boise County, Idaho (Dismissed)

An additional 28 utilities, water districts, hospital authorities, and other municipal units have also gone bankrupt in the wake of the financial crisis.

PS: Didn't you and I already have this conversation via PM's? I feel like I'm repeating myself.

A question about the lay out of the game Mora if I may?

Will you make seperate threads for each of the clans and one general thread? Or put it all in 1 and make sure we all tag correctly?
Out here in the fields, I fight for my meals and I get my back into my living.

I don't need to fight to prove I'm right and I don't need to be forgiven.

Winterborn

Just my two cents, the former set up sounds better. Isn't the maximum number of threads per game equal to half your players?

Also, character sheet is forthcoming, but I have to crash and work again tonight. Off for most of the coming week, though!

One thread for each faction, plus one neutral area thread.

It's 2x the number of players (including GM)

I feel like I'm repeating myself.

Sorry to hear that.

Anyhow, in my quest to get a better understanding of the setting and clear up a few things (like how can a city/county that doesn't have any legal standing for its existence have a police department), it appears I've annoyed the person who set up this otherwise wonderful scenario.  She's obviously put a lot of work into it.  I apologize for all my shortcomings and won't be bothering you again.  I'm sure my spot won't be hard to fill.

...

The location is called: Line County  (Line County Police = LCP)

There is no real suburban area unless he was with a different police force from another city. In which case you could say that he came here to really get into the action or something.

Line County is a war zone. If you check out my last post in the recruitment thread, you'll see that the police are front line soldiers.

A good analogy to being a police officer in Line County is less like being a police officer and more like being a soldier in Afghanistan
.

As an officer your equipment is worn out, you maintain everything yourself. There is almost no back up. You are a Black&White soldier fighting a war and trying to find ways to maintain the peace. Well, peace is too good of a word. You are just trying to keep the war from growing out of control.

Every day you get off work and make it home at the end of the night it's a relief. It means you've survived one more day.

.. and yes, please post your interest in the Gangland thread soon.

You are pretty much correct accept in that Detroit is a lot worse off then you think it is and so are those inner city locations in LA. There will be business areas outside of the place we are playing at and suburbs outside of it too but those are not part of the Line County area where we'll be inhabiting.

I am intending for Line County to be rougher then most modern cities but not by much.

Detroit is Batman's Gotham City without the Bat. It's actually worse then Gotham city because the unemployment rate is around 50%. Stats will tell you it's like 20-30% or something but that's because the majority of people living in the city have stopped looking for work years ago.

For fun, I suggest the documentary, "Detropia." Which to be honest, that documentary paints a sunnier picture of the city then a multitude of other shows from around Youtube will paint for you.

((Check out this video to get a picture of Detroit's police))

This is Detroit:
(junkyard neighborhoods, skyscrapers empty of businesses for decades, and downtown streets you can walk in the middle of during the day and not see a car)

1SAZ

Jonathan 'Jonah' Falk
Faction: Police Detective Third-Grade
Player Name: 1SAZ
Description: 27 years old, 6 feet 1 inch in height, 179 pounds in weight.

Tools:

  • SIG Sauer P226 9mm
  • Blackhawk Sportster SERPA paddle holster
  • Light undercover ballistic vest worn under his shirt.
  • Steel Handcuffs and key
  • Apple iPhone 4 with Magpul Case
  • Small flashlight
  • Notepad with a pen slipped through the rings, kept in his breast pocket
  • An odd cross strung around his neck
  • Paracord bracelet around his right wrist
  • Wallet with money, ID, and badge in pocket

Hooks:

  • Believes in justice for the people, but rarely makes arrests for non-violent crimes regarding the R9s or SIN
  • Bassist. And yes, he is very good with his fingers for being one.
  • A huge geek. He has a Glamdring letter opener on his desk, a collection of swords in his apartment, and a bookshelf dedicated to manga and graphic novels. He also has the Green Lantern symbol tattooed on the left side of his chest and a stylized sword with wings on either side tattooed on his right forearm
  • Friendly with the gangs, though they know he is as clean as they come. IA, however, disagrees.
  • Often seen chatting with members of the gangs and reminding them of the LCPD's presence.
  • Regular at the firing range, and instructor for their Self Defense Class for pistol shooters.
  • Has been shot three times in the line of duty, once in the ass
  • Has a particular favoritism to Scotch, and can be found off duty at one of the local bars
  • His little brother is a member of SIN, acting as a lookout during various deals.
  • Hates cats. Don't ask why.

Tales:

  • Born in the middle of the night on February 29th to a former 'model' (porn star) mother and an unknown father.
  • Arrested for breaking and entering at the age of 10, let off with a slap on the wrist thanks to the arresting officer feeling sorry for the kid.
  • Charged with assault after stopping the rape of his mother at the age of 15. Charges dropped once the mother admitted that her client attacked her.
  • Placed in foster care while mother served a five year sentence for drug possession, prostitution, perjury, and theft.
  • Entered LCPD's Officer Training Program upon graduation from high school.
  • Almost expelled from training after a confrontation with another student after student spread about the identity of his mother along with pictures of her during her 'modeling' days.
  • Spent three years as a beat officer before Organized Crimes took notice of his casual acquaintance with both gangs, offering him a position as a detective.
  • Recently demoted to Detective Third-Grade after letting a gang member flee (though his reason was that the crime didn't hurt the civilians and was only $50 and a pack of Menthol cigarettes, and chasing the suspect would probably end in gunfire).

Sexual Preference: Heterosexual
Character Mortality: Yes, death is a possibility

Why did they join the faction that they joined? Jonah wanted to leave the path of crime that he was heading down and his morals led him to the other side of the fence. He feels a strong sense of duty to Line County, and to it's people, whether they are civilians or members of the various gangs.

What do they want out of life? Peace in Line County

How long has their family lived in Line County? At least three generations at this point.

agentlemanwithadream

Hooks:

  • Considers himself an OG Enforcer, doesn’t want to move up in the gang because he might get bored.
  • Sells Marijuana, despises the sale of cocaine in any form and tries to keep it out of his hood.
  • Has a soft spot for fucking women in other sets.
  • Drives Black 2003 Chevy Impala
  • Considers himself to be an enlightened Gang Banger and views Gang life as a lifestyle that grants freedom from the oppression of the established system
  • Has several counts of assaulting a police officer, resulting in them either pursuing him aggressively, or ignoring him to save themselves.
  • Loves boxing, UFC, organized street fighting etc.
  • Served three years in Line County Jail
  • Believes that Gangs should put down their guns and handle disagreements with their fists.
  • Has coached recreational basketball
  • Currently considering becoming a pimp on the side.

Tales: Ricky’s father and older brothers were R9 Enforcers so he was born into the gang lifestyle. At the age of eight and nine, Ricky was traveling with his older brother to collect protection money from local businesses and was exposed at an early age to the brutality involved in gang life. He was amazed by it. Ricky started fighting early, knowing that he wanted to be a part of the R9s. His school career was limited because of multiple suspensions for fighting. At the age of 18 he was jumped into the R9s in one of the longest, most brutal jumping ins in recent gang history. He fought so hard that his own brothers and father decided to help beat Ricky into submission, resulting in a four week hiatus so that he could heal properly to begin doing work for his set. Ricky soon proved himself as a good enforcer but got locked up at the age of 21 for multiple counts of aggravated assault and one count of battery against an officer. He spent the next two years in jail, missing the birth of his daughter and rethinking his life in the R9s. However, the gang took good care of his mother and sister while he was away so it reaffirmed his belief in the gang lifestyle. Ricky also read a lot of books while he was he was incarcerated, some of his favorite authors included Karl Marx and Malcolm X, leading to his further distrust of the system. When he got out, he went straight back to banging without a thought.

Sexual Preference (or link to your O/Os): Heterosexual; A Gentleman's O&O's

Character Mortality:  Yes

Why did they join the faction that they joined? He joined the R9 to continue a legacy.

What do they want out of life? A neighborhood that offers opportunity for people to succeed but not necessarily in the gang lifestyle as he realizes not everyone is built for it.

How long has their family lived in Line County? As far back as he can trace, not that he tried very hard.

Sure! I'll get a character sheet up... eventually.
Don't know if you want to roleplay with me? The answer is yes, you do. But fine, I guess I'll give you one of these: Ons and Offs, as well as a Wishlist.

I approve this message!

Dashenka

Not 100% if it's an English Staff or an AmStaff... It looks like an English though.

Also not too sure if the Shephard would end too well given the historal names and their fates. He might end up OD'ed on Anti Flea.

I was tempted to include my own dog, something similar to Sam from I Am Legend, however I think Seb'll stick with his Ruger ;D

Lithium

Elira Kadare
Faction R9s, Chief Enforcer
Player Name: Lithium
Description: Age: 31 - Height: 5'5" - Weight: 129 lbs.

Tools:
Hooks:

  • She's not shy or afraid of being crude
  • Treats her work like a business, tries to avoid making it personal
  • ...but God help anyone that pisses her off enough to make it personal
  • Has a lot of pride
  • Drinks pretty heavily without being an alcoholic
  • She can be slightly racist at times
  • Sleeps with a stuffed animal when she's alone

Tales: Elira was born and raised in a ghetto in Albania that might have even made Line County seem like an upgrade. She had hard working parents and a very protective older sister, but life was still rough, each day a struggle just to keep food on the table and wood in the fireplace. Very, very slowly, her family had managed to save up enough money to move out of the ghetto and into a cheap, but still pretty decent part of the city's suburbs - but then all hell broke loose.

Elira was in her mid-teens when the civil war started, a few months before it was officially declared. Different rebel groups started coordinating together against the corrupt government, and nowhere was the movement stronger than in the ghettos, where the oppression and injustice had always been at its worse. Elira's parents got caught up in it, their patriotism leading them to join the rebel cause and put their savings towards purchasing weapons and other gear instead of the home that they'd always dreamed of.

Her older sister, Venera, didn't take it too well. She was firmly against the idea and went off to try to regain the money that their parents had wasted (at least according to her) by working the streets as a lady of the night. Elira was caught somewhere in between, but eventually ended up joining the rebellion alongside her parents once she was sixteen, believing that they were fighting for the greater good.

Four years went by. Elira's father took a hail of bullets to the chest during a firefight with the military, her mother was captured and executed by a firing squad after being extensively tortured and interrogated. Elira lost her sister as well after Venera had battled the HIV that she'd contracted for a year and a half. Having nothing else left to live for, she put all of her anger and focus into the war effort, playing a big role in the rebels' victory where they finally overthrew the higher powers.

She thought that things would finally get better after that, and they did, but only for a short time. It wasn't long before the seeds of corruption germinated and grew once again, stronger than before just like weeds. Only this time, the new leaders had learned from the mistakes of the former ones and operated through more subtle means. Meanwhile, the nation was shattered and the population too exhausted to engage in another war, so things went back to how they'd always been before getting even worse.

Former members of the rebellion broke up into smaller gangs, each of them vying for survival, trying to grab a bigger piece of the meager riches and resources leftover than all the others. Elira herself was too tired and disillusioned to look for another cause, so she did the same as many others, joining one of the gangs on top of offering her services up as a mercenary. Having had more success than most, she built up quite a name for herself - perhaps too much of a name, since she ended up on the police's most wanted list as well as several hit lists on top of it.

When the heat became unbearable, Elira liquidated all of her belongings and put most of her savings towards smuggling herself out of the country. She wanted to go somewhere else, somewhere that she'd be able to have a fresh start, and this time she planned on doing it right so that she ended up at the top and would never have to fear anyone again.

Sexual Preference: Bisexual
Character Mortality: Yes

Why did they join the faction that they joined?: It seemed to her like the stronger of the two gangs in Line County.

What do they want out of life?: Never having to live in fear.

How long has their family lived in Line County?: They haven't.
