If you can pronounce correctly every word in this poem, you will be
speaking English better than 90% of the native English speakers in
the world. After trying the verses, a Frenchman said he'd prefer
six months of hard labour to reading six lines aloud.

Try them yourself!  Have fun!

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.

(Mind the latter, how it's written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:
Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low,
Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery,
Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles,
Exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
Solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind,
Scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet,
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad,
Toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation's OK
When you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.

Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
And enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,
Doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,
And then singer, ginger, linger,
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge,
Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very,
Nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.
Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little,
We say actual but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer.
Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate;
Dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed,
People, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover,
Between mover, cover, clover;

Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
Chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
Petal, panel, and canal,
Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four.
Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean.
Doctrine, turpentine, marine.

Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary.
Crevice and device and aerie.
Face, but preface, not efface.
Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear
Do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,
Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
Pronunciation (think of Psyche!)
Is a paling stout and spikey?

Won't it make you lose your wits,
Writing groats and saying grits?
It's a dark abyss or tunnel:
Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight,
Housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup.
My advice is to give up!!!

I struggled with Terpsichore, I had to go look it up... but other than that I think I did alright. It would be interesting to hear people recording themselves do a verse of this....

I actually thought about recording it....but no one wants to hear me stumble... or my high pitched little girly voice.  And besides, I'm such a perfectionist that I'd probably record it over and over again, about 20 times, before I was either finally satisfied with it, or just gave up and said 'that'll do'.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Wow, this is really fun and a great find. I think some of the words are traps, though - for instance, bass could be pronounced like the instrument or like the fish. I tripped up there and then was second-guessing myself the whole way through. But I still got most of them right!

Funny how one word could be pronounced different ways. I wonder if Texans and New Yorkers would argue about how "Houston" is pronounced? :)

Ooh, I did one too xO!!!! *totally excited <333*

It only took me three tries to get it right, though I did have to look up Islington and Balmoral, as well a couple of the other words.

*laughs* Actually, the reason I messed up the third time was because my housemate interrupted and I started speaking in Chinese midway through.

Accent? Oh nohz! I've never thought that I had an accent... I've lived in the States all my life! *laughs* What kind of accent was it? Maybe it's just a case of East Coast vs. West Coast, or Midwest vs. West Coast...?

Or maybe I just live with a bunch of other people who speak the same way I do, so I don't think I have an accent? xDD

My mic is odd, and brings my voice down in pitch from like 0:09-0:25. But other then that, a few mess ups purely on my part, as I kept forgetting that people need to breathe...

OK, so after posting my own, I finally got to listen to the others

MND your voice id gorgeous up until the puberty thing hit, but you did a great job.

Kalen, excellent job, did you ever work in radio, you have the voice for it, great annunciation.

Caeli, OMG, I never thought to look them up, just went through it, great job and beautiful voice.

Josietta, you know how I feel about your voice - more songs - please

Ket, great job and way to jump out in front, all those choir practices paid off, your voice is beautiful too.

And lastly, Thanks Adventurer, that was a lot of fun.

For anyone struggling with Windows XP, which has a recording time of 60 seconds...

Open Sound Recorder

Record NOTHING for sixty seconds.  That's right, nothing at all.  Save that as Blank.wav.

Next, stay in Sound Recorder, and hit Edit --> Insert file.

Browse to where you saved Blank.wav, and hit open to insert it.

Each time you do an iteration of Edit --> Insert, you get yourself another minute.

I myself took almost exactly 5 minutes to say this little monologue, and I'm a fast speaker.  I'd suggest at LEAST six.

Mine took 00:07:01 Minutes, but I read out loud slower than you, I would suggest to anyone trying this method listening to at least a portion of Kalen's and Mine and comparing speed we speak and compare that to your own, then make the judgment.

Or you could just make it 10 mins and stop the recording when you are done.

Also there were questions about sound settings...

You'll have to go to your control panel to your sound settings. Then there should be an option for recording and speakers. If you select the recording option it will show you your type of mic you have. select it and then either hit properties or configure. Configure will allow you to test your mic with their system to see if its working properly or if the actual property volume needs adjusted. Properties will allow you to manually set your mic volume higher or if need be turn on the mic boost (which will make the mic pick up sounds more easily though it may pick up background as well).

The purpose of the sound settings is to make your mic more efficient with actually setting the boost if needed (which some stem mics need)
and it lets you test your mic to see if its working the way you want.

That takes a lot of practice, have you ever heard of Toastmasters?  Look around for a local club and see if you can get involved, a lot of people think its dorky or geeky, but with your knowledge of the language, the practice of getting up in front of a known crowd that you know is accepting and will give you honest critiques afterwards can help you mold your speeches so you are not as nervous and can project clearly and slowly; that way your audience can hang on every word you write.

I go at 90 mph all the time and used to speak the same, but they helped me to slow it down and speak much clearer, that is why mine took 7 as opposed to your and Kalen's 5.  Nothing wrong with speaking fast, but I know you are getting to the point in your education where you need to give a lot of speeches and I would hate to see your talent for written word suffer upon your translation into spoken word when something so simple as more practice could avoid it.

I think it does, but not within hours.

I figured you were taking as class, hence your need to prepare and do so many speeches lately; you will learn a lot more from a formal class (You really don't learn much from Toastmasters), it just presents you with a a ready and captive audience with feedback and critique afterwards to practice what you learn in your class.  Most meetings are only 45minutes long and take place every other week, mostly on lunch breaks - but that depends on each club.  Just a suggestion for more practice.

Mine was first attempt too, at 3:00am after working a 14 hour day and coming home to do paperwork.  But now you guys have me worried no about mis-pronunciation and I don't know if I can go back and research every word there.  Did you listen to mine, were there a lot of errors?  I can maybe try it again tonight.

Actually, for half a second, I considered slipping into Rick Astley lyrics halfway through the reading. Either that or the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song.

Obviously, restraint triumphed in the end.

By the way, I was doing some research on the actual poem and found that it wasn't written by "B. Shaw" (originally, I thought that meant George Bernard Shaw). It's true origins can be found here:

http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/j17/caos.php

and a copy of the poem that actually gives him credit:

Here is My shot at it:
http://www.speedyshare.com/400296864.html

Dearest creature in creation
Studying English pronunciation,
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse.
I will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy;
    Tear in eye, your dress you'll tear;
Queer, fair seer, hear my prayer.
Pray, console your loving poet,
Make my coat look new, dear, sew it!
Just compare heart, hear and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word.
Sword and sward, retain and Britain
(Mind the latter how it's written).
Made has not the sound of bade,
Say - said, pay - paid, laid but plaid.
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as vague and ague,
But be careful how you speak,
Say: gush, bush, steak, streak, break, bleak,
Previous, precious, fuchsia, via
Recipe, pipe, studding-sail, choir;
    Woven, oven, how and low,
    Script, receipt, shoe, poem, toe.
Say, expecting fraud and trickery:
Daughter, laughter and Terpsichore,
    Branch, ranch, measles, topsails, aisles,
    Missiles, similes, reviles.
Wholly, holly, signal, signing,
Same, examining, but mining,
    Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
    Solar, mica, war and far.
From "desire": desirable - admirable from "admire",
Lumber, plumber, bier, but brier,
    Topsham, brougham, renown, but known,
Knowledge, done, lone, gone, none, tone,
One, anemone, Balmoral,
Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel.
    Gertrude, German, wind and wind,
    Beau, kind, kindred, queue, mankind,
Tortoise, turquoise, chamois-leather,
Reading, Reading, heathen, heather.
    This phonetic labyrinth
Gives moss, gross, brook, brooch, ninth, plinth.
Have you ever yet endeavoured
To pronounce revered and severed,
    Demon, lemon, ghoul, foul, soul,
    Peter, petrol and patrol?
Billet does not end like ballet;
Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
Banquet is not nearly parquet,
Which exactly rhymes with khaki.
    Discount, viscount, load and broad,
    Toward, to forward, to reward,
Ricocheted and crocheting, croquet?
Right! Your pronunciation's OK.
    Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Is your R correct in higher?
Keats asserts it rhymes with Thalia.
Hugh, but hug, and hood, but hoot,
    Buoyant, minute, but minute.
Say abscission with precision,
Now: position and transition;
Would it tally with my rhyme
    If I mentioned paradigm?
Twopence, threepence, tease are easy,
But cease, crease, grease and greasy?
    Cornice, nice, valise, revise,
    Rabies, but lullabies.
Of such puzzling words as nauseous,
Rhyming well with cautious, tortious,
    You'll envelop lists, I hope,
    In a linen envelope.
Would you like some more? You'll have it!
Affidavit, David, davit.
    To abjure, to perjure. Sheik
Does not sound like Czech but ache.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
Rachel, loch, moustache, eleven.
    We say hallowed, but allowed,
    People, leopard, towed but vowed.
Mark the difference, moreover,
Between mover, plover, Dover.
    Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
    Chalice, but police and lice,
Camel, constable, unstable,
Principle, disciple, label.
    Petal, penal, and canal,
    Wait, surmise, plait, promise, pal,
Suit, suite, ruin. Circuit, conduit
Rhyme with "shirk it" and "beyond it",
But it is not hard to tell
Why it's pall, mall, but Pall Mall.
Muscle, muscular, gaol, iron,
Timber, climber, bullion, lion,
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
    Senator, spectator, mayor,
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
Has the A of drachm and hammer.
    Pussy, hussy and possess,
    Desert, but desert, address.
Golf, wolf, countenance, lieutenants
Hoist in lieu of flags left pennants.
    Courier, courtier, tomb, bomb, comb,
Cow, but Cowper, some and home.
"Solder, soldier! Blood is thicker",
Quoth he, "than liqueur or liquor",
Making, it is sad but true,
    In bravado, much ado.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
Neither does devour with clangour.
    Pilot, pivot, gaunt, but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand and grant.
Arsenic, specific, scenic,
Relic, rhetoric, hygienic.
Gooseberry, goose, and close, but close,
    Paradise, rise, rose, and dose.
Say inveigh, neigh, but inveigle,
Make the latter rhyme with eagle.
    Mind! Meandering but mean,
    Valentine and magazine.
And I bet you, dear, a penny,
You say mani-(fold) like many,
Which is wrong. Say rapier, pier,
Tier (one who ties), but tier.
Arch, archangel; pray, does erring
Rhyme with herring or with stirring?
    Prison, bison, treasure trove,
    Treason, hover, cover, cove,
Perseverance, severance. Ribald
Rhymes (but piebald doesn't) with nibbled.
    Phaeton, paean, gnat, ghat, gnaw,
    Lien, psychic, shone, bone, pshaw.
Don't be down, my own, but rough it,
And distinguish buffet, buffet;
Brood, stood, roof, rook, school, wool, boon,
    Worcester, Boleyn, to impugn.
Say in sounds correct and sterling
Hearse, hear, hearken, year and yearling.
    Evil, devil, mezzotint,
Mind the z! (A gentle hint.)
Now you need not pay attention
To such sounds as I don't mention,
Sounds like pores, pause, pours and paws,
    Rhyming with the pronoun yours;
Nor are proper names included,
Though I often heard, as you did,
    Funny rhymes to unicorn,
Yes, you know them, Vaughan and Strachan.
No, my maiden, coy and comely,
I don't want to speak of Cholmondeley.
No. Yet Froude compared with proud
    Is no better than McLeod.
But mind trivial and vial,
Tripod, menial, denial,
Troll and trolley, realm and ream,
    Schedule, mischief, schism, and scheme.
Argil, gill, Argyll, gill. Surely
May be made to rhyme with Raleigh,
But you're not supposed to say
    Piquet rhymes with sobriquet.
Had this invalid invalid
Worthless documents? How pallid,
    How uncouth he, couchant, looked,
When for Portsmouth I had booked!
Zeus, Thebes, Thales, Aphrodite,
Paramour, enamoured, flighty,
    Episodes, antipodes,
    Acquiesce, and obsequies.
Please don't monkey with the geyser,
Don't peel 'taters with my razor,
    Rather say in accents pure:
    Nature, stature and mature.
Pious, impious, limb, climb, glumly,
Worsted, worsted, crumbly, dumbly,
    Conquer, conquest, vase, phase, fan,
    Wan, sedan and artisan.
The TH will surely trouble you
More than R, CH or W.
    Say then these phonetic gems:
    Thomas, thyme, Theresa, Thames.
Thompson, Chatham, Waltham, Streatham,
There are more but I forget 'em -
    Wait! I've got it: Anthony,
    Lighten your anxiety.
The archaic word albeit
Does not rhyme with eight - you see it;
With and forthwith, one has voice,
One has not, you make your choice.
Shoes, goes, does [1]. Now first say: finger;
Then say: singer, ginger, linger.
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze and gauge,
    Marriage, foliage, mirage, age,
Hero, heron, query, very,
Parry, tarry, fury, bury,
Dost, lost, post, and doth, cloth, loth,
    Job, Job, blossom, bosom, oath.
Faugh, oppugnant, keen oppugners,
Bowing, bowing, banjo-tuners
Holm you know, but noes, canoes,
    Puisne, truism, use, to use?
Though the difference seems little,
We say actual, but victual,
Seat, sweat, chaste, caste, Leigh, eight, height,
    Put, nut, granite, and unite
Reefer does not rhyme with deafer,
Feoffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Dull, bull, Geoffrey, George, ate, late,
    Hint, pint, senate, but sedate.
Gaelic, Arabic, pacific,
Science, conscience, scientific;
Tour, but our, dour, succour, four,
    Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Say manoeuvre, yacht and vomit,
Next omit, which differs from it
    Bona fide, alibi
    Gyrate, dowry and awry.
Sea, idea, guinea, area,
Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean,
    Doctrine, turpentine, marine.
Compare alien with Italian,
Dandelion with battalion,
    Rally with ally; yea, ye,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, key, quay!
Say aver, but ever, fever,
Neither, leisure, skein, receiver.
Never guess - it is not safe,
We say calves, valves, half, but Ralf.
Starry, granary, canary,
Crevice, but device, and eyrie,
    Face, but preface, then grimace,
    Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Bass, large, target, gin, give, verging,
Ought, oust, joust, and scour, but scourging;
Ear, but earn; and ere and tear
Do not rhyme with here but heir.
Mind the O of off and often
Which may be pronounced as orphan,
    With the sound of saw and sauce;
Also soft, lost, cloth and cross.
Pudding, puddle, putting. Putting?
Yes: at golf it rhymes with shutting.
    Respite, spite, consent, resent.
    Liable, but Parliament.
Seven is right, but so is even,
Hyphen, roughen, nephew, Stephen,
    Monkey, donkey, clerk and jerk,
Asp, grasp, wasp, demesne, cork, work.
A of valour, vapid, vapour,
S of news (compare newspaper),
    G of gibbet, gibbon, gist,
    I of antichrist and grist,
Differ like diverse and divers,
Rivers, strivers, shivers, fivers.
Once, but nonce, toll, doll, but roll,
    Polish, Polish, poll and poll.
Pronunciation - think of Psyche! -
Is a paling, stout and spiky.
Won't it make you lose your wits
    Writing groats and saying 'grits'?
It's a dark abyss or tunnel
Strewn with stones like rowlock, gunwale,
    Islington, and Isle of Wight,
    Housewife, verdict and indict.
Don't you think so, reader, rather,
Saying lather, bather, father?
    Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, bough, cough, hough, sough, tough??
Hiccough has the sound of sup...
My advice is: GIVE IT UP!

Damn Dang, it will play with the Quicktime plugin in Firefox if you have that, or have you tried downloading it and opening it in "window Media Player"?

I will try remixing it into a different format later tonight, i think I used the MPG3 overlay.  maybe you don't have the right codec.

Wow there's lots of people posting their voices, I'm way behind

Caeli - Islington and Balmoral are understandable, they're random places in the UK. Your voice is so nice ^^
Josietta - It kept going wierd (and you kept laughing :) ) but what I did hear sounded very good.
Kalen - It is terpsichore, you said it right, lovely voice
Dawg - I don't know why but I didn't imagine you voice like that ^^ I can't remember any mispronunciations
Para- Epic voice though you speak rather quickly!

I've finally got hold of a mic so I'll be adding my version soon... (the short one for starters I think)

You need to wait until after a 14 hour day at work, then push out 1,500 words for Nano, another 1,000 or so for games, beat yourself up because you think you could have done so much more, let the dog out and when they would rather chase the possum than come back in run out in below freezing weather in your flannel pajama's to get them back in, sit down and look at your clock and realize you have three hours before you need to get up and start over again, then say F&*k it and go for it.  Then you won't be worrying about the length :)

Yeah I struggled with that one as well. I think it's because Singer follows it, and our minds are looking for that slight variation in pronunciation ahead of time.

The voice we hear played back never sounds like the one we hear in our heads  :P

You have a nice accent! It's interesting to hear these words spoken in it, since every recording so far has been from across the ocean.

Dawg- I listened again last night. I've forgotten the errors again though...there were hardly any, so don't worru about it!

Yeah that would be my stupid mic. I got a new one now though, so it should work better. And as for the laughing, that would have been due to my silliness, lack of sleep, and the fact it was 3am.  Thank you though. I'll be redoing the long one with the new mic.

The Raven is an excellent read, but posting that in here would be hijacking the thread.  Of course there could be an Elliquiy version of it, we could use that and start a new thread.  There is also the Boom De a Da song thread that a few of the ladies here have sang to.

Well when I record these sorts of things, I do it raw. I don't read it before I start recording. I just record as I read it for the first time. Hence the pauses and "go backs." I was slow just so i could read it properly and hoped I wouldn't make as many mistakes.. but being tired attributed to that as well. I'm glad you liked what you did hear though. The new mic worked out well then, from what i've been told. Much better than the last one.

Yes the new mic did work well, much clearer.  I read through it once but that was because I scraped it from the website and it would paste directly into the thread here so I had to massage it a bit in an editor before I put it in the thread (and Bade is pronounced the same as Bad, that is why that sounded funky.  I had the same issue with "Banquet is not nearly parquet, Which exactly rhymes with khaki" I pronounced it as pahr-key instead of pahr-kee, not sure which is right but the latter rhymes so it must be the correct version, unless we are all wrong and it is supposed to be ka-key.

Good job

Merriam Webster's online dictionary has audio of all the words' pronunciations, as do many other online sites of that sort.

Hmmm, recording my attempt at part of this may just give me something to do tomorrow...

My On and Off list

My other on/off list

Let the Priests of the Raven of dawn, no longer in deadly black, with hoarse note curse the sons of joy. Nor his accepted brethren, whom tyrant, he calls free: lay the bound or build the roof. Nor pale religious letchery call that virginity, that wishes but acts not!

For every thing that lives is Holy.

Thanks so much! I converted it and it worked like a charm.

I got tired near the end, said Aunt a way I don't normally say it and totally stumbled on Melpomene.

Excellent Job Maeven, Sorry its taken a few days to get back to this - I missed it since it came in while I was out last weekend.

I agree that you were fast but I can here that Southern Florida twang in there.  Your enunciation was very good especially with the speed.

* Hugs for the courage to get it up *

-has a blonde moment-  I just freaked out thinking 'Greeeat...now I have to record it all over again!'  Then a fishy swam by and smacked me with it's tail and told me 'Silly girl, you still have the original file!'

Lucky!

My hard-drive crashed since then, so mine is gone forever.

Not all of them, only a select few are gone and they may have been deleted by the users and no the host site.

Looks like the Speedy Share ones so you are right, probably the host site.
