Most system lite games tend to use the numbers in terms of character creation as a guideline for making those decisions.  For instance if my Crab berserker were to walk into a geisha house with an Investigation of 0, the GM would adjust his description of what I find.  Whereas if a Crane magistrate moved into the same geisha house at the same time with an Investigation of 3, then the description would be altered.  I, as a player, selected how I was going to assign those points so I deal with the repercussions in a system lite game.  Honestly though, dice rolls in non-combat situations can more than adequately be handled by a GM behind the scenes or by pro-active players.

Combat slows things down not because of dice rolls it seems to me, but rather because time itself slow down for the fight as suddenly every action becomes a vital detail.  Therefore every person involved in the fighting MUST post on time and quickly.

That's a great idea, Pumpkin Seeds! :D I wish I'd thought of that! ::)

Yes, that's the biggest problem with online multi-character roleplaying. If one person lags behind on posting, it slows the whole game down. :-( Also, in the case of adult-oriented roleplay, one character might be enjoying himself with a geisha, while some of the others would have to wait around until they were finished. ::)

True. The other issue with combat is where it occurs in a given order, if a player isn't there to post, you have further delay.

I think if I were to try and whip up something rules lite, I'd probably start with the aspects from the FATE syste, ... let the characters define themselves that way, and if a skill could reasonably be expected to fall inside that aspect, yep, you have it.

Give a pool of points that players could use to buy other skills, increase a skill level, buy advantages / disadvantages (which get you a few extra points), and you could probably whip up a rough and ready character in fairly short order.

Maybe use a variant of the FATE combat system, where you can use successes and failures to apply temporary (and not so temporary) aspects to the characters or enviroment.

Take the Bloodbowl dice rolling. Compare skills. Equal, roll 1 dice, result ranges from failure to success. One side higher skill, roll 2 dice, higher skill picks which result gets used. One side REALLY higher, roll 3 dice, higher skill picks.

Alternately, the FATE dice set with + / neutral / - can determine how well, or badly, someone does.

If we're going to be using FATE, I shall give this a pass.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with the fate system at all. :-\

In the game I tried (Dresden Files) I found way over complicated for what it was.

Silverfyre

Really? It's not that complicated for what it aspires to be from my own experiences.

I'd be interested still if we used FATE or the system Pumpkin Seeds put forth.

Chris Brady

I expected a much more rules lite experience than I got.  Especially between juggling Aspects and choices made.  Didn't help that we had 8 players at the demo table...

It is not the best for large games. That much I can say about its difficulties.

I'd vote for Pumpkin Seed's suggestion of using character creation and then freeforming it.

LOL! That's funny! ;D

I think google's translator only recognizes Japanese if it is written in Japanese characters, such as Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. It must not recognize Romanji (Japanese written with Roman characters). :-)

I said "Hello! How are you?" :D

So, just asking if anyone is still interested in playing/running this thing? I wanna play my lIon Bushi girl ^^

Songbird

I'm still very interested in taking part in a L5R campaign, whether as a group or one-on-one. :-)

I may have something in the works.  Would be along the lines of the system I had put forth earlier but with more stylized elements.  Thus far the idea is shaping up to be sandbox with objectives.  I believe a tenative year of 1148 has been put forward as well.  Nothing truly cast in stone yet but there are talks.

Silverfyre

Hm, I might be on board for that once work clears up a bit.

BraveEarth

Huh I just learned that we 'currently' have a Unicorn Emerald Champion... officially this time.

Now off to see how bad Mantis and Crane relations are. >.>

WinterRat1

Not sure if this thread is still active, but the last post was only a little over a week ago, so being new and limited in what I can do I figured a little idle chat never hurt.

To respond to the OP's question, I've been playing and GMing L5R (mostly GMing) since it first came out. I've played every edition, and while I love the story and setting, the mechanics, especially 4th edition's, make me want to slam my head into a wall. Great example of a game with unbelievably awesome style but equally awful substance.

I have always preferred the Scorpion Clan and I hate how they frequently get the shaft from the writers/developers. I prefer playing a bushi with a lot of courtier skills backing him up.

My second favorite would probably be the Crane, preferring a duelist. Iaijutsu can be one of the most fun mechanical parts of the game, if done right, IMO.

Where do you all get your L5R story updates? I stopped following after they made Kitsuki Iweko the Empress (HUH?) and the War of Dark Fire (WHAT??) and the random Zombie Apocalypse (SERIOUSLY???)

If I just performed thread necromancy, I apologize. Otherwise, looking forward to discussing a little L5R with some other fans of the game!

Pumpkin Seeds

AEG defiantely does confuse me some with their decisions.  Though 4th seems pretty fair, at least from what I can tell.  :: shrugs:: Course I'm not much of a rule person.

Anyway though, welcome and you didn't do thread necromancy.  The thread needed a bit of fresh water sprinkled on the surface.

WinterRat1

Speaking as someone who tends to be a rule person, 4th edition is pretty awful in terms of making the fluff align with the mechanics. But I won't derail this thread by arguing about mechanics. I just wanted to see if people were still talking about L5R and/or playing it here, because I do love the fluff and setting, if not the mechanics.

HairyHeretic

I've played L5R from 1st ed through to 4th. Personally I think 4th is the best rule set I've seen, though admittedly I haven't played very many sessions with it.

I'm more accustomed to 2nd and 3rd edition rules myself, but 4th edition does feel more simple and streamlined. :-)

Pumpkin Seeds

3rd edition I found to be the worst.

BraveEarth

That's pretty much the consensus I got from various people. Having not played or had access to a 3e book I can't personally comment.
