Looks like Fantasy Flight Games bought the rights to the L5R RPG?

Indeed, quite some time ago.
They intend on releasing an LCG somewhere in 2017. Nothing else is really known about what they are going to do meta-plot wise. Quite a few people are hoping for a semi-reset, but I just keep my fingers crossed for Spider Clan remaining playable. As much as I liked the Shadowlands, they just felt too much outside of the mechanics of the game to "fit". Same goes for the RPG.

I'm glad and skeptical about it at the same time. FFG treats its most successful franchises well, but those that don't make the cut vanish into unsupported obscurity very quickly. At least I'll be able to keep up with the card game if it's al iving one though; the CCG was just too expensive and came out much too quick for me.

I'm glad this thread is still alive! :D

Admittedly, I've fallen behind as to the most recent news and editions of L5R. I have a lot of catching up to do. :-[

Keep your fingers crossed that it survives and thrives! It's too marvelous a setting to give up on! :-)

On a tangentially related note, there's a new edition of 7th Sea coming this year as well.

I've never played that before. Is it in any way similar? :-)

It's roll and keep but designed for swashbuckling.

HairyHeretic

The first edition rules for both were fairly similar in the mechanics. L5R has gone on to 4th edition, with the rules changing significantly over that time, whereas 7th Sea didn't get the same attention. Both settings are a fantasised versions of our own world, Japan and Europe respectively, and as has already been said, 7th Sea is very much a swashbuckling game. For example, enemies come in 3 types .. brutes, henchmen and villians. The same roll that might hurt a villian would allow you to flatten an entire squad of brutes.

It's a fun system. In my old tabletop group I ran a Vestenmannavnjar skjaeren (think Viking rune magician). He was frequently responsible for the phrase 'mysteriously struck by lightning' coming up in conversation  >:)

LOL! Few things are better than a lightning-slinging Viking! ;D

Huh. Just found this thread.  Makes me want to play L5R again. C'est la vie.

It may be off topic but yes, lightning-slinging vikings do sound awesome.

Yay, L5R thread still going :)

I'm hopeful that there will be a fifth edition, but fourth edition is great.. so many books.. so many plot bunnies. :)

If your original reasons were like mine (inability to keep up and also just too expensive), you might like the fact that FFG has bought the rights and will likely turn it into a living card game.

I loved L5R. It's the first tabletop RPG I played and one I GM'd for a while over on (another roleplaying site). Mainly though I've played in it. That and the card game, but the RPG was better. I ran my game under 3rd ed revised. The 4th ed book was beautiful, but I only ever tried a single game or two under that version of the system.

Personally I think there are probably enough books out there for it already. It's fine as it is, though the card game was hard to keep up to date with because they kept bringing out more and the old cards would fall out of use for tournaments and things. I only ever played in one card game tournament for it and some people sure know their decks well. They play it crazy-fast. I actually had to read my cards. It probably drove them equally crazy.

Anyway, personally I think the game has reached its pinnacle. If I was to run it again I'd look at 3rd ed revised or 4th ed, and not invest in more books. Just my 2c.

I do think that a year or two away will make wanting a new L5R RPG better, one of the problems with making a "time-neutral" 4th edition is that you can't say "Want to get stats for the latest stuff? Gotta play the new edition"

There are people who play the L5R card game online

HairyHeretic

Some of the stuff in the timeline made very little sense mind you.

Personally I prefered the pre Clan War era, though that might have something to do with running the City of Lies campaign for about 3 years with my old pen and paper group :)

I just want Spider Clan. I sincerely doubt they'll be coming back for FFG's run, but my wish remains!

Has anyone looked at the new edition published by FFG yet?

They did reset the timeline back to basics for the game.  Some things are slightly altered canonically speaking for the original 7 Great Clans with all the new Great Clans such as Mantis and Spider not being Great Clans or in the case of the Spider, not being a thing at all atm.

I do like how they integrated The Game of Twenty Questions better for character creation when you create characters for the RPG.  The Core Rulebook is a bit cumbersome in regards to organization, but it isn't terrible either.  I just have seen far better in my honest opinion of it all.

Because I do a good chunk of my gaming online, the specialty dice is a bit annoying, there are conversion tables for it all and such so that is a plus, but until I am familiar with the game more it is a bit hard to play the game online.  I am well aware that this is a blatant cash grab by FFG to make more money that way, but in my opinion, limits their audience to just live games in person.  For now we just have to wait and see how it goes and how it will do.  I do like the lore of the game and everything else and even bought one of the short stories they have published too.  The lore and setting looks amazing, but the mechanics are my issue at the moment.  Am hoping to get more familiar with it and hope that I can get good with converting dice rolls better in my head or have my handy conversion table at the ready.
