QuoteI remember seeing an article about hooking up speakers to the lamposts, so when they see someone misbehaving they can yell at them.

You mean this?

This is the future of Britain, and faced with a choice of having either Brown or Cameron implement it I voted with the ferry.

Ironic isn't it that in Britain, we have private individual encouraged to set up cameras to surveill the streets, yet if your on the streets with a camera a policeman can demand an explanation of why you are photographing, and you can be thrown out of shopping centres/malls without reason. It can be an arrestable offense to even take a picture of a policeman or government official under our "anti-terrorism" laws! Things have gone a little mad!

*Laughs*  Yes because big brother wants to watch you..not you watching them. It always easier to hide truths that way... wouldn't want everyone with the same capabilities.

I guess that means that all those tourists wanting pictures of the Beefeaters are now out of luck?

Wow, that's incredibly sad. It seems like the UK and US are on track to erase any privacy and freedom that may be left.

We in the UK are a long way ahead of you on that front...

I think I mentioned somewhere that a building committee that I had to address in November was pushing the idea of fitting surveillance cameras in school laboratories.  Such is the nature of the times that they were actually surprised when I objected.

There's a show that I've seen called 'The Principal's Office' that basically tracks what you'd think:  principals from various schools dealing with disciplinary issues.  I assume that any featured incidents involve waivers being signed by all parties, but I was surprised at how many schools currently have cameras installed.

There are even hallway cameras in my daughter's elementary school.  Back in my day, we had actual hall monitors.  >_>;

It still comes to the point of if you don't commit crime then there is nothing to report. If your behavior isn't against the law then you really shouldn't care that someone sees you doing what ever you are doing, even if it is on the internet. If you want complete privacy then keep the things you don't want people to see in your home with the curtains shut.

I know I'm a few months late, but I just couldn't let this go without a challenge. I'm not some freedom-loving, archetypal American ( I'm not American at all, just for the record! ), but this is wrong on so many levels, and which is worse, it could be used to justify any security measure at all. Wiretapping, keeping tabs on your activities on the internet, anything at all could be justified by saying that unless you're doing something illegal, you shouldn't worry. I think Orwell explored this thoroughly enough in Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's exactly the same thing.

That's not to say I think this is a bad thing on that basis alone. I would still be open to this sort of thing, if it could be proven to have a significant, easily demonstrable effect, and was centered around places with a high rate of crime and high concentration of people, so that they could be avoided as well. Because if I think privacy is worth risking being pickpocketed for, then I should have that right.

Edit: As for mentions of V ( maybe that's why my graphic novel hasn't arrived yet? ) - just mail me my Guy Fawkes getup, and I'm there, front and center.

It seems to me that the heart and soul of the debate really seems to be whether we should consider privacy a civil right, and whether 'privacy' refers to things like phone conversations, letters, and other such correspondence. Does the government have the right to use a telescopic lens to watch us in our homes? Does the government have the right to place microphones in our flower pots? Does the government have the right to randomly sweep the houses and storage units of random citizens in an effort to keep them from making bombs? What about our emails and letters? Do they have the right to watch every videotape we make (or .avi, or whatever) to make sure we're not producing kiddie porn? Should fear of a small percentage of the population affect how the rest of the population is treated?

It seems like everyone has different answers to that question.

Laurrel is right. The romance 1984 took place in London! And there is already a war to keep everyone frightened...
