Has anyone learned to type by themselves?  I am looking for sites or lessons that students could use on their own.

Some will not have their own machines.  They would probably be doing it from Internet cafes, so something time efficient is good.

Is this something that's doable in a few weeks?  We have a long semester, but I've never done this myself.  I started learning through a regular classroom in high school.

There are several free online typing courses. A few you could look into (I only picked those that have all their material out in the open to be checked, and require no sign-up):

Well, thanks for narrowing it down a little.  I would need them to be free.

I guess I'm wondering more if anyone has used some, or has any more particular recommendations from anyone.

Well, no online course has achieved anything like the prominence of the Mavis Beacon software (which, after decades, is still only for-pay). Still, all those courses seem to follow pretty much the same standard practice sequence, starting from the centre of the keyboard and gradually expanding outwards. Probably the best way to pick is which site layout is easier to follow.
