At first I thought it was a play on the word pear/pair... but that would leave three pears left.

My guesses

The second monk took the pair from the first monk and the third monk took the pear from the second.

Or, there were five pears in the tree to start with.

ok... I give.

The answer is that one of the monks is called "Each" so "Each" took one - not the other two - or in it's original language "Chaqun"

I know "Groan!"

OK - an oldie:

The person who makes it, sells it. The person who buys it, never uses it. The person that uses it never knows that they are using it.

What is it?

DiverseDesires, you'll probably get this in a tick. It's another one from The Hobbit.

Thirty white horses on a red hill
First they champ
Then they stamp
Then they stand still
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.

How to play with toys.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

DiverseDesires

Yes, as you know I have read all The Hobbit riddles - so I'll leave others to guess at this one!

As I was going to St Ives

I met a man with seven wives

Every wife had seven sacks

Every sack had seven cats

Every cat had seven kittens

Kittens, cats, sacks, wives

How many were going to St Ives?

NO RULES! If someone uses google, then they may... But they should let at least one answer come first... out of fairness.

DiverseDesires

I have streets yet no pavement to crawl,
I have cities yet no buildings at all ,
I have forests but no trees short or tall,
I have rivers but no water or waterfall,

What am I

I'm glad people are having fun but as Yugi once said to kaiba.... "Playtime is over!"

My riddle will leave you batty....

I see without seeing,
To me day is as dark as the night,
What am I?

DiverseDesires

You gave it away!  ;D Otherwise it might have taken me longer!

okay this ones a bit hard but that's what makes it fun ^_^

I can be hundreds long but am rarely more then eight inches
I can open your eyes but must be seen first
I've spoken to you countless times but you don't know my voice
You know me by many names, some loved others hated
I take you away when you are holding still
what am I?
