Looking for an Exalted Campaign (interest check)

Since I haven't seen anyone advertising a normal Exalted game I thought I'd make an effort to drum up some interest. Maybe if enough potential players get together talking about ideas it'll ignite a creative spark in someone to be our Storyteller. While I don't feel comfortable GMing Exalted (as I've never actually played using the Exalted system) I do have a fairly decent command of the setting and would be willing to help out any prospective GM in setting up and organizing a campaign. I'm happy to play using either Second edition or the new 2.5 errata; and if people don't want to deal with that complex of a system, I also know of a pretty good modification of FATE Core intended for the Exalted setting that I could post if people were interested (I'd just have to find it first, it's somewhere on Google docs...) After all, you play Exalted for the setting, not the mechanics.

So, anyone who would be interested in an Exalted campaign- why don't you post about what sort of storyline or characters you'd be interested in, and we'll see what comes together?

Personally, I'd like to play a Changing Moon Lunar Exalted, whether in an all-Lunar game or  a mixed party, in a social/intrigue-focused game (or at least a balanced combat/social game) set in or around one of the setting's major cities outside of the Blessed Isle. A game where etiquette, seduction, and blackmail are as important as strength of arms. Alternatively, an all-Infernal villainous campaign could be interesting, being sent out on a mission to undermine some facet of creation in whatever ways we see fit.

Muse

I'd very much enjoy playing in an Exalted game.  (I'm slowly running one myself.)

I have a lot of concepts.  Solars, Lunars, Dragon Blooded, and Sidereals.  I'd rather not play a Death Night or Infernal game.

I think my favorite concept right now is a dawn caste solar.  She's kinda small, and has trained a unit fit but small girls into an air force that rides Strix.  (Giant owls.)

I'd be happy to run a 2.5 Exalted game of just about any kind, but NOT BY FORUM. I have sworn never to try to run another asynchronous game (forum, wiki, email or anything where not all the players are communicating at the same time). It always ends in tears and recriminations.

(EDIT: Discussion of non-forum play has been moved here.)

Muse

I don't know if that works for anyone else, but your offer is enticing to me, Riveda.

FYI others following this thread: Muse and I are throwing around the notion of text chat at roughly midnight US Eastern Time on Wednesday nights (that's 9 PM Wednesday US Pacific, 4 AM Thursday UTC).

See also here.

KrataLightblade

If it weren't Wednesdays, I'd be so there.  Sadly, I work nights on Wednesdays generally.

But I'll keep an eye on this thread because if the night changes, or my days off change, I might try joining up.  I'm a huge Exalted fan.

Trilogy

I would be totally fine with a game over chat, but I work full-time weekdays so after midnight EST/EDT on any weeknight is basically impossible for me... Any way you could do earlier in the evening?

Marie Reynolds

Id be wiling to give it a shot, I think ill try and work out of my comfort zone and not play a dragon blooded.

Everyone will be playing the same creature type. I am open for discussion as to what that should be. If it were up to me to choose and impose that choice on the rest of you, it would be Lunar Exalted, because I haven't run a Lunars game yet; however, I would prefer to achieve consensus.

AndyZ

Likewise interested if not Wednesdays. 9pm would be kinda late for me too
It's all good, and it's all in fun.  Now get in the pit and try to love someone.

I'd love to join a chat game, but that late on a weekday doesn't really work for me. Since my frame of reference is one roleplaying group I have that has eight hour-long sessions, how long do you imagine sessions might run for this game?

Rajah

I'd be very interested in an Exalted game by forum, since the chat idea seems to be taking off. Perhaps one centered around the three types of Solar shard (Solar, Abyssal, and Infernal), and their Lunar mates? Or just a general Exalted game of any permutation, twist, or perfectly standard interpretation. 2.5e is kinda necessary at this juncture, I think. At the least it's the best there is for now.

4-5 hours, most likely. Especially if it starts at midnight, I don't have the stamina for more than that.

Anon315

Alas. Though I love Exalted and Lunars most of all, my work shift literally starts at midnight eastern on Wednesday. And proceeds hence for eight hours. (I have just gotten off one such shift)

People who are interested in a text chat game:
Please go here and follow the instructions (even if you have already told me via IM, PM or reply to this thread what your availability and preference are—I want to have it all in one place if possible). Time and day are still up for discussion—might be before or after midnight, Monday to Thursday.

People who are interested in a forum game:
This is your thread now, or maybe you should start a new one just to avoid confusion.

Rook Seidhr

I surely don't have a problem with that; it would be silly for me to object to whatever other games you felt like playing. I just wanted to disentangle the threads since there still seems to be a call for a forum game.

Rajah

So, who other than me and Marie would be interested in a forum game?

Well seeing as I am down to just two games now I might be interested in joining a forum based game.
Life is a hard game but the rewards are sweet if you know where to look.

Yeah, you can peg me down for interested in a forum game too.

Muse

I'm still interested in a forum game as well.

Thanks for untangling things, Riveda.  That was a good idea.

Guess I'm still on board for the forum game, since Rivera's looks like its going to be run after midnight... Like I said before, I'm willing to help someone set up for a game but having never actually played Exalted I probably shouldn't run it.

KrataLightblade

I'd offer to run the game myself, but I so rarely get to be a player anymore that frankly I'm kinda burned out on running games... I've been toying with running another game on here but I'm having a lot of trouble convincing myself to do so.

I've almost never gotten to actually play Exalted rather than running, so I'd be a lot happier as a player.

Rajah

Fair enough. So it seems there's a pretty solid amount of interest - anyone who actually DOES want to run the game?

That pretty much goes for anybody, honestly... I'm more than willing to accept someone who's not 100% with the system, and be willing to work with them on it.

There's always the option of just using a different system and the Exalted setting. I can't seem to find the particular FATE Core mod I'd seen before for Exalted, but it was pretty simple- if I can't find it, I can just write out the hacks that were added from memory. FATE in general works really well for Exalted's scale of play, especially in an environment like a forum. Combat in particular would be simpler to run, and it would allow for more free-form actions and charms.

Would someone be willing to run using something like that? I hesitate to go full-on free-form, but a rules-light narrative system would probably be simple and effective for something like this, if someone would be willing to GM.

ShadowFox89

I would honestly love a FATE-system First Age Exalted game. I even have a character that I would love to use....

Exalted game, check.  Near total lack of GM, check.  Second Edition, which I know best of all the Exalted systems, check.

Alrighty then.  Muse, ya caught me, and I need to get my hands dirty with roleplaying again, anyway.  SO.  That having been said, I'll need to throw together a game concept first, but before I do that, let's do some finalized tallies here.

I'd like everyone interested to post their choices on:

  • Freeform, Rules-Light, Full-System
  • First Age, Second Age
  • All Same Exalt Type (all Lunars, all Solars, etc), Mixed Circle

As for FATE, I've heard of it, but I would hesitate to run it, because of the fact that I know VERY little about it.  I tend to go closer to freeform with my RPs anyway, only calling for rolls when there's something dire at stake, ie, you're trying to do a double backflip over a gap in a roof with a seventy foot drop in the middle, I'm kinda gonna have to ask you to roll for that one.

Full System: Second Edition + all 2.5 and Ink Monkeys material.
Second Age: Or even Third Age, where the Realm has collapsed, Autochthonia, Hell, and the Void are in a three-way war over who gets to destroy Creation (the Great Maker wants its resources, the Yozis want its suffering, and the Neverborn don't want anything at all), the Silver Pact and Five-Score Fellowship are united in a civil war between those who want a new Deliberative and those who want a new Usurpation...could be fun.
Mixed Circle: 'Cause I wanna play Infernal but I know not everyone wants to do that.

Trilogy

I knew we'd catch somebody  ;) Thanks PiP!

I tend to shy away from free-form outside of one-on-one roleplays. Having some kind of rule structure makes things easier, even if you rarely have to use it. I'd actually prefer a rules-light system for a forum game (if not FATE, what would you suggest? FATE is really easy to learn-and free!) but I'm fine with wading back into Exalted character generation and seeing what I can come up with. Combat seems like it'd take forever to resolve, though...

I'd prefer Second Age to First. I feel like it has more opportunities, and a better chance for exalts to grow from regular people to legendary heroes.

As for Exalt type, my top choices would be a mixed Solar/Lunar/etc circle game, a straight Lunar game, a straight Infernals game, or possibly a mixed Infernals/Abyssals/Akuma game. (I really just want to play either an Infernal or a Lunar, I guess.) So I guess I don't really mind either way, as long as we're not looking at a straight Solar circle. If we do play mixed circle though, I'd suggest we look at some of the homebrew exp cost charts out there that put other types of Exalts on a more level playing field with Solars.

Marie Reynolds

If we go mix I would rather see Solar and Lunars. The games age not really to concerned with I would find something interesting to play in any age. Also rather reluctant to have a game involving Abyssals in it due to the last Exalted game I was in that had them involved.

Updated Tally, counting those that had two choices as voting for both.

Freeform1Rules-Light2Full-System4
First Age0Second Age4
Same Type1Mixed Circle6

At the moment, it looks like Full System Second Age game with a Mixed Circle.

One additional thing.  If we do go mixed circle, I would like to restrict it to one side or the other: Protectors of Creation, or Destroyers of Creation.  Translated into normal speak, either Solar/Lunar/Sidereal, or Abyssal/Infernal/Akuma

The reason I include Sidereal and Dragon-Blooded in both sides is because I've ENCOUNTERED evil nasty members of those exalt types that are working with both the Yozis and the Neverborn.

Additional Note: I've played an Alchemical, and with the errata, they are still rather broken.  I would PREFER not to have one in any game I run, but if you give me a convincing reason why that Alchemical would be running around with the circle in question, I'll give serious consideration.  This also goes for an exalt type that's opposite the party, for instance an Infernal running with a party of Solars and Lunars.

Also, I'm putting story idea on hold for the moment, until we decide what everyone is going to be playing.

System: Full system please, with 2.5 errata.  I'm not familiar with Ink Monkies but don't object.
Type:  Mixed circle, but please stick to your guns about no corrupted exaltations.
Era:  First age could be fun, but my vote is for second age.

Could it be thematic Protectors or thematic Destroyers? IE: heroic Solars, redemption-seeking Abyssals, repentant Bronze Faction Sidereals or world-enslaving Solars, loyalist Infernals, chimeric Lunars et cetera. One of the best things about Exalted is that moral claims are few and far between and good and evil tend to be personal rather than factional choices. I prefer good-guy Infernals anyway. At this point I feel like it's weirder to stick with the Reclamation than to just leave it at the earliest convenient opportunity, unless you go full-on Yozi empathy.

Considering a Slayer, favoring maybe the Sea That Marched Against the Flame or the Principle of Hierarchy, a man who dreams of a sacred city where the weak are made strong and all impurity is burned away under the light of a perfect white sun. When he wakes, he knows its name, and the name is his own.

KrataLightblade

I'd prefer a heroic game over a villainous one, if only because it's harder.  God, there are so many threat s to Creation at this point that it almost feels like the bad guys SHOULD win.  That isn't to say I wouldn't play one of the darker characters though.

I've got a couple of characters in mind, including a female Twilight who Exalted during a speech in Heaven about how the gods weren't doing enough to save Creation and whose goal is to build something worthy of the First Age again, a Moonshadow Caste Abyssal on the run from his Deathlord (who unknowingly is doing exactly what his master plans for him to do), and a Sidereal chessmaster working with the Circle on either side... to either channel their destructive ends to something positive, or to support the heroes of the Dawn/Moon/Whatever in saving Creation, whether Heaven likes it or not.

I'm kinda partial to that last one, if only because that's the only one not loosely based on a character I've already played, but I do love Solars.

That said, I can come up with other ideas pretty easily. I'm spitballing right now.

Pretty in Pink

@Pumpkin:  Of course it's not too late.  But I'll probably cap it with you being the last possible entry.

@Rajah:  That would fall under the "Give me a reason" clause.  For an Abyssal, it better be a good one for them to risk the wrath of their Neverborn and Deathlord masters to go against the Great Design of Oblivion in such a direct way.  Same with the Infernals and the Yozis and the Reclamation.

@Krata:  I actually like the Sidereal, and would like you to go with that, actually, if you don't mind.  I have use for a Sidereal.  *plotting handrubcackle*

@Draco:  First, thank you for trying to run that Exalted game for us a while back.  I realize I was one of the inactivity culprits, and for that I apologize.  That being said, I would say go with either one.  This is going to be a game that runs the gamut of diplomacy and combat, so either one will be useful.

@EVERYONE:  As of this moment, Muse is my official assistant.  I know the system, but character generation is still a little sticky for me.

  *Grins* Sakinah is awesome.

Pumpkin, would you  mind if I played a dawn caste too?

What if someone decides to play someone a little under powered by comparison? Like, a dragon blooded or a god blood?  We could start them with a bit extra to keep things a bit more evened out.

SolarOID, right? Team Green (and the Ubergoths) have mates too, eh.

Sketch-up:

Silver-Inked Depths Treasure (as a mortal, he was Cantaxes Taemos)
Malefactor of the Sea That Marched Against The Flame
Motivation: Outshine the Suns of Heaven and Hell
Urge: Ruin or steal the worship of the traitor gods (Urge to Drown)

Intimacies: Ikarra, his sister (fierce love); Creation (devotion); Cecelyne (pity); himself (absolute faith); Ligier (admiration); the Unconquered Sun (contempt); the Celestial Exalted (wary hope); tyranny (hatred); dominance (lust)

Favored Abilities: Martial Arts, Integrity, Performance, Presence, Resistance, Survival, Occult, Athletics, Stealth, Socialize

A former priest of the Unconquered Sun who lost his faith when he saw a young Solar bandit queen butcher his home's entire militia just to sharpen her swordsmanship on their lives, and then build a terrifying enclave of highwaymen and murderers from its remnants, setting herself up as a petty despot. To use the gifts of the Guarding Star for such evil without reprimand was too much injustice for him to witness; he destroyed his church, and wept bitterly amid the shards. It was there that Hell found him, comforted him, told him that it knew his pain...the strong rule the weak, it whispered, but you could be strong.

He grew sick of the Reclamation when he realized they were no better than the bandit queen he'd devoured, lost in their spite and hypocrisy. The world was too wide. He missed his family, and his demon friends longed to see Creation...one day he simply left, and so far Hell has not been able to drag him screaming back. He has forfeited his humanity, but he remembers being human; he changed the world as he touches it, yet still hopes for its brightest future. He walks the world, neither Yozi nor Solar but somewhere in between; if no better world is coming, he has decided, he will become one, and join Creation to his will so that it might become as well.

Making a Lunar, I'll post my character concept when I get home from work (can only post from my phone here.)

Rajah, if you're interested I could be your lunar mate? I've always liked the idea of a lunar discovering her mate was one of the lost 150, especially if you're going the redemptive/Devil-Tiger route. She'll be a Changing Moon social manipulator type, so she'd probably be good at reining him in if necessary.

Cool! I think that would work pretty well.

Here's what I have as a character concept so far...

Cunning Fox Robed in Silk
(or just Silken Fox)
Lunar Exalted of the Changing Moon

Motivation: Tear down and replace the Realm.

Aoko Kohara was a strange choice for a Lunar Exaltation. She was born of wealth and privilege, the eldest child of a successful outcaste Terrestrial of the Realm and his high-born wife, who had maneuvered their way into a great deal of power and influence on the Blessed Isle thanks to his military victories in the East and her family connections. She grew up learning the ways of nobility, father and mother grooming her for her (they hoped) eventual exaltation.

Their success was short-lived, however, as their powerful friends had even more powerful enemies- particularly amongst the Dynast houses- and they soon found themselves ‘assigned’ into relative exile in a small Satrapy in the Eastern Threshold. Not as a punishment, she soon learned, but for their protection. Her father, it seems, had become involved in certain conspiracies involving one of the potential heirs to the Scarlet Empress’s throne- and the other Dynasts vying for the position had found out.

It wasn’t enough. The assassins came in the night. They went for her father first, wisely targeting the only exalt in the family. He fell, but his fight awoke the rest of the family, who attempted to flee. As the assassins closed in on them, Aoko threw herself between their blades and her siblings, and in that moment she finally Exalted- not with the colored anima of the Dragon-Blooded, but the pure silver-white of the chosen of Luna. Howling with rage and pain, she tore the assassins to pieces... and then, coming to her senses, was confronted with the terrified faces of the family she had just saved. Unwilling to face their stares, she fled.

In the wilds outside the city, she received a vision from the Goddess, directing her East. After only a few days travel she was picked up by a Lunar pack, sent out to retrieve the new Exalt. Feeling abandoned by her past she threw herself passionately into her new life, building a close bond with her Mentor, an elder member of the Winding Path, who saw the usefulness of a Lunar who knew her way around the more "civilized" folk of Creation. Under her tutelage, the newly initiated and tattooed Silken Fox aided with many of her the projects in the Thousand Streams River, learning how to move undetected within the herd of humanity, how to use both her social skills and her animal charm to manipulate them into doing her whim... and how, when necessary, to tear out "weeds" that threaten their careful cultivation.

Now Cunning Fox Robed in Silk has left her mentor's side, striking out on her own to forge her own experiments in Creation. Unknown to any Lunar save perhaps her mentor, though, is a much greater ambition than the creation of a few self-sustaining societies in the Threshold, pulling the Silken Fox closer and closer to the Realm. To her, the Realm is a cancer on Creation, a useless mass run by Dynasts who care nothing for the people living beneath them, pointlessly squabbling amongst themselves for positions they have done nothing to deserve. They must be exposed for what they truly are, their imagined strength torn down, their people empowered, until the day comes that their rotten core will collapse, allowing a new society to arise in its place, one in which the worthy rise to power and the people are free from the petty conflicts of those who undeservedly see themselves as their betters.

And if it takes a Silver Empress to do it, so be it...

After some discussion I'm possibly going to try for an Eclipse merchant queen using air ships and the like.  Sort of a swashbuckling figure.

@Trilogy:  Sounds good to me.  Go ahead and start stating her up, and if you need the character building guidelines for Lunars, please do let me know, cause that much I can give you.

@Rajah:  Alright.  Firstly, I will EXPECT you to play that Urge.  In addition, you may want to define it better.  As it sits right now, I, as your ST, would say that includes Solar and Lunar Exalts as well, since they were the ones that first overturned the Yozis and Neverborn to begin with.  If you are okay with that, then again, play it.  Even if it means the party doesn't like you.  Aside from that, if you're okay with that, go ahead and start stating yourself up.  Again, I can get you the build information if you need it and don't have it.  And get with Trilogy to figure out the extent of the Bond and plan it out.  This link will help with that.

@Pumpkin:  Responded to your PM.  Sounds good, just get me a background.

@EVERYONE:  I'll be getting an OOC and a Character Sheet thread posted up very shortly and linked in to this topic, which I'll probably end up PMing the links to Trilogy to be put up in the first post so people can find it.

Awesome! Send me the build guidelines when you get the chance then, I have some of a sheet finished but I'd like to see those before I finish it up.

Also, are we using 2.5? Because that will change some things with character generation versus normal 2e IIRC.

Rajah, I'll send you a PM late this evening and we can discuss things.

Pretty in Pink

Yes, we'll be using the 2.5 Errata.  I have access to that, I'll just have to check it against the 2nd Edition books before I give any definite numbers.

Also, OOC is up  I'll be having Muse pin it as soon as I can get hold of him, and I'll have the character sheet thread up soon as well.

KrataLightblade

I'm good with playing a Sidereal, absolutely.  While their Charm set was broken pretty badly in a lot of ways, I like the interesting way their stuff works, and I look forward to playing one.

I'll start working on him an get a few ideas out soon.

HairyHeretic

I'm sorry I missed out on this one. I wouldn't mind getting back into Exalted in preparation for 3rd ed. If a slot opens, would you mind giving me a shout?

I do apologize, Hairy.  If I do get another drop, I will be sure to let you know.

Also going to mention here, I am a completely new-to-Exalted Storyteller, though I have experience with the White Wolf system Storytelling, in Vampire and Werewolf on tabletop.

Hmm. Seems I reactivated my account just a touch too late.

I would also be interested in participating in an Exalted forum RP, if another one opens up any time.  :-)
