This is very common with conspiracy theorists unfortunately. Which when eventually they're called on to take responsibility for what they are doing to the parents of murdered children, does not go well for them. See Alex Jones currently.

The biggest news from over here - Polish teachers go on country-wide strike!

https://www.euronews.com/2019/04/08/polish-teachers-strike-over-pay-after-talks-with-government-fail

It seems that at least 50% of all teachers from public schools joined the strike - and, if the unions are to be believed, the number is closer to 80%. This is a big crisis, especially as graduation exams for elementary and / or middle schools are to start on Wednesday. If the teachers keep on striking, there won't be enough personnel to conduct these exams...

Personally? I fully support this strike. The teachers' wages are notoriously low - which makes the living hard for existing teachers and, also, decreases the number of young people willing to take on such a job. If the government doesn't do something, we might end with no teaching cadre in a not-too-far future...

Also, the government really did bring this strike on themselves. The teachers have been voicing their requests for wage increase for at least a year - and the government kept saying that there's no money in the budget for such raises. But then, not too long ago, the government realized it might be losing some of its support... so they came up with a plan for enormous public spendings. Spendings much higher than what's needed to give the teachers raises they asked for. So, apparently, the government was willing to find the money... just not for the teachers. No wonder the teachers blew a fuse and went on strike...

I'm from Illinois, in Chicagoland, from a union family. You are not gonna catch me disagreeing with these teachers.

Any educational system where teachers have to go out of pocket for school supplies like paper and pencils is fundamentally a broken system.

Tolvo

A lot of people have no idea how bad teachers have it, especially considering how hard of a job it is. Keep this in mind too that when you see teachers on the news literally using their bodies as shields for children during school shootings, they are in that job most of the time just for the sake of teaching because rarely is there any financial incentive to enter that line of work.

Allison Mack of Smallville is being prosecuted and pleaded guilty to... what???

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-47858819

Not a fan, but I'm still surprised to learn she was involved in something like that!

This has actually been a known thing, but wasn't a big story that people latched onto. I have some friends who investigate cults so I end up hearing about all the weird stuff going on with actors and other powerful people getting involved in and forming cults.

I must say it's the first time I've heard of this case... It definitely gave me a "huh" yesterday.

In another news - the first black hole photo ever!

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/apr/10/black-hole-picture-captured-for-first-time-in-space-breakthrough

Hmmm. The photo don't see any extradimensional demons swarming out of it, but I say we need to keep our eyes on this object. In case a howling apocalypse horde bursts out of it :P

There's a whole seven-part CBC Radio podcast series about it: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/podcasts/current-affairs-information/uncover/

Saying the details are a trip & a half is understating it by about an order of magnitude.

Okay, following all of the disturbing things our (= Polish) current government does is extremely depressing... but here's a yesterday's quote from one of the ruling party's more important senators:

We will not stop until we have fully cleansed Poland of people who are not worthy of belonging to our national community

https://twitter.com/notesfrompoland/status/1116102284168110082

I mean... holy crap  >:(  :o  :'(

And regarding the teachers' strike (which is still going - it seems that the government's strategy at this point is sitting it out...), the speaker of the Senate (a guy from the ruling party, of course), gave this brilliant piece of advice to the teachers today: when working, they should focus on the ideals, not the money! Just as he, the Senate Speaker, does - and will always do!

... his monthly wage is ten times that of an average teacher, BTW.

Folks, I'm going to split the Assange topic to it's own thread. It's major enough news to warrant it's own topic and has a fair amount of replies in the news thread. Just letting y'all know to hold off on any more Assange updates until the thread split. I'll leave a link here to the new thread once it's split/made!

QuoteRetired Pope Benedict XVI has published a letter which blames clerical sex abuse on the "all-out sexual freedom" of the 1960s.

Of course, blame everything but the fucking institution that you where the head of and used to protect these monsters. Nope, the church is innocent, it is everyone elses fault. fucking twatbag

Not sure which angle is the biggest news here: that president Trump (or somebody close to him) invited Kim Kardashian to the White House to give the President advice on reforms to criminal justice (!) - or Kim K. actually considering to study law and become a lawyer...  :P

From what a friend told me, she’s a pretty big in prison and sentencing reform. She spoke up quite a bit last year about it. Me? I only know her for being in a sex tape an being married to Kanye West. Her father Robert was part of OJs defense team it turns out.

A Fire has broken out in Notre Dame, images of it are heartbreaking. A world treasure is burning.
