Angelscroll- a mountain keep dedicated to the pursuit and archival of all knowledge, named in homage to a mythological archangel who is said to be the keeper of a library housing all the secrets of the cosmos. It is something between a fortress and an academy, a place guarded by powerful spells and devoted warriors, where students can study virtually any discipline, and scholars from the world over come to pursue research. Behind its great walls, brilliant minds teach their crafts to those fortunate enough to attend the academy; everything from astronomy to acrobatics, botany to bookkeeping, and magic to the arts of war.

Before it was the tranquil place of learning that it is today though, the ancient keep had many less altruistic masters- estranged sorcerers, conquering lords, and monstrous entities have all claimed ownership over the centuries, and many dark mysteries lie within and beneath its stony architecture. Some of the professors have been known to devise ingenious 'missions' for their students- tasks that force them to rely on their knowledge and skill, and often pit them against the secret dangers of the ancient keep.

The players will be students at Angelscroll, individuals of varied interests, abilities, and background. Given the fantastic nature of the setting, a wide range of fantasy races should be acceptable for the students. Also, I imagine that, despite all being students, the protagonists might easily be of widely varying age as well; an elf character might be more than a hundred years old, etc. The power level of the protagonists should be somewhat modest, and their abilities should generally fit some common theme, as 'classes' do in many roleplaying games (wizard, fighter, rogue, etc). Granted, the freeform nature makes conforming to a rigid list of specific abilities unnecessary, so players shouldn't feel like their character should only be able to do one thing.

Now, before saying anything else, I should make it clear that I don't intend to be the 'manager' or GM of the story. I expect to take a smaller role as one of the protagonists. In fact, the description above is essentially all I've thought out so far. That being said, for this to go anywhere, we need someone to take a guiding role; someone who is willing to sculpt the rough block of the setting and play essential NPCs, monsters, etc. This GM will obviously have plenty of artistic freedom (I'm not even particularly attached to the name "Angelscroll"), just so long as the general premise is intact (it's not necessary that the entire game take place at the academy either; circumstances might very well lead the protagonists on adventures out in the world).

As far as eroticism goes, I expect to be playing a more-or-less asexual character, but I will probably be willing to take part in non-consensual scenes, should that arise. If others want to partner up among themselves, then I have no objections to it. If the GM does decide to throw in heavy doses of non-con, I ask that it be largely exotic (creatures with strange anatomy, quadrupeds or serpentine bodies, tentacles, etc), and also of a generally non-gory and non-hateful nature.

Anyway, I won't say anything else until I know there's some interest in pursuing this kind've thing.

FragarachZ

This looks interesting. I'll take part as a player if there are a couple of more people in, possibly playing a fighter or ranger type student. The character can be either male or female depending on the group we have.

Arioch

If this gets some traction, I wouldn't mind running a sorcerer/summoner. I could see this character trying out spells more advanced that the training received, leading to some interesting results.

Koyume

Excellent; I'm glad to see that this idea isn't just going to die without a fight. I suspect our GM will probably have some specifications of his/her own, but just to lay out some general guidelines for character creation: all student characters should have a name, age, race, background (in particular, how they became involved at the academy, what they're studying...), description (picture, a physical description, or both), and a section detailing their general skill-kit, i.e. what the character is good at, general strengths and weaknesses, etc. Realistic characters don't usually have just one defining quality; a person might be physically strong and intelligent to boot, and in the same vein, a character specializing in swordplay might happen to study magic as a hobby and know a few spells.

One way or another though, the students should be far from infallible.

Haven't had the fortune to GM a fantasy-story for years. If you have some suggestions or wishes as to the tone of the story I would be happy to see if I can pull something together.

My first thought is that it feels like some sort of under-siege-plot bubbling here. Perhaps an old wicked master of the keep has conquered the world outside, just to find that the forces of good has taken up residence in the very same fortress he started out from. While the walls keep back all the monstrosities that he throws at them, sometimes the teachers of the keep must send the students down into the labyrinthine crypts of the old master to dig up weapons and spells that could turn back the tide and allow them another breath before the next push against them. While a seemingly dark and hopeless theme, I think it could be harnessed into some really powerful scenes and the catacombs beneath the keep could be filled with all sorts of horrors that the old owner created a long time ago.

So how about that? Something to work further on?

Vaulera

Oh I am very interested in this one, I like the sounds of this and I am eager  to hear more about it.

Koyume

@Wargtass: Splendiferous; it sounds good to me. I'm rolling around some character ideas, maybe I'll try to get something down by tonight.

Wargtass

Splendiferous. Never received praise like that before, but it's rather flattering. The character sheet as it is now is all good, but I would like to add personality to the list. It's a good way to get some direction to the character and a way for others to know how their character feels about yours (if they at all know each other).

I'll have a moment with my trusty plot-pipe (no, just regular tobacco) and I'll write up some general history that can coexist with what you have already written up.

You were born in Angelscroll and you will most likely die here. None know how long the ancient keep has been under siege of the vile forces of the Great Tyrant, nor does anyone know how long the magic seals of its walls will keep them safe from the horrors of the outside world. Every year at the same day the Great Tyrant, sitting on a litter built out of bones, is carried to the gates. There he demands surrender and when refused announces his new attempt at breaching the walls. Each year the magistrates of the keep send down their students in the dangerous catacombs underneath Angelscroll to find new weapons and spells which can repel the siege. For every year fewer and fewer students return with horrible tales and scars on mind and body. Those that survive are made teachers for a new generation of students, knowing that one day their pupils will be faced with the same terrifying task.

For three centuries and nearly five decades the siege has gone on. Now the litter approach for the 350th time and the people of Angelscroll gather on the walls to hear the Great Tyrant...

So, it's short and ambigous, which is the point. The current residents of Angelscroll keep know no other world than that of the safety behind the wall. Even so thousands of soldiers die every year from the assaults on the walls and the situation is dire. I see the keep more as a city-sized library and academy, where regular people live and the gifted study the different arts.

I'll leave it fully up to you, the players, to invent the setting as you see fit, with the exception of the history of the setting. I have got that in mind already and as you process the story you will find out more about the world outside the walls and history of it and the keep. What you do know of the history is pretty much what Koyume wrote in the opening fluff. Except those who live in the keep are the only people alive and the missions that the professors send their students on are less a test and more a fight for survival in a world that is no longer their own. Other than that, make it up and make it cool (but sensible).

Now a character sheet, compiled by Koyume and stuff added by me. Most are rather standard, but some I added for spice and garnish. Go wild, kids!

I am very interested and the ideas I've heard thus far sound fun to me.  Is there any chance that there's a secret weapon buried in the catacombs that might defeat the evil tyrant?  Or any such rumor/legend that might actually keep hope alive?  Or do the denizens of angelscroll know that it's only a matter of time before they fail?

While that is a minor thing, it would have impact on the tone and even the personalities of the characters.

If the people are only fighting to survive from year to year, than it's likely that there would be a very morbid, dark, dirty and gritty feel to the game.

If there was hope, it's possible that it could be a little brighter, no?

Wargtass

Personally I am a fan of dark and gritty. But there are of course always legends of such fantastical things in the deepest levels of the catacombs, though few believe in them.
O/O

Arioch

Nice history. It deviates from what Koyume had envisioned, but, I like the dark, foreboding aspect of it.

Do characters have to be born there or can they come from other areas?  It wasn't clear if the siege is a constant thing or if it starts at the same time each year (maybe for weather reasons) and then ends.

Koyume

Phew, hope that isn't too much or anything. Would have had it up yesterday but my internet went down for a while. Hit me with any questions, comment,s complaints, etc, and I'd be happy to make changes. Also, the 'undead-synesthesia' thing is in reference to the traditional belief that dhampirs can sense the presence of vampires and whatnot.

Name: Arden "Wolfeyes" Greywaters
Age: 20
Race: Dhampir
Gender: Female

Background: Arden is the foster daughter of a respected professor of Angelscroll's academy. Her mother was a well-loved human student who became mysteriously pregnant, claiming to have no knowledge of how it happened, and died shortly after giving birth. It was clear at her birth that Arden was not a normal child, and scholars quickly identified her as a dhampir- the child of a vampire, tainted by undeath and cursed with hungry desires that most humans never knew. Many who knew her young mother despised her, and some of those who learned what she was feared her and wanted her gone from Angelscroll; thus, she was largely estranged in her childhood.

The professor who took her as his ward is a kindly, older man, well respected by his peers; he learned to love Arden, raising her as he would his own child. He did his best to indulge her interests, but she was a feral child with unnatural urges, and he knew that she needed to learn discipline if she was to have a chance at a normal life. She was given a tutor- an enigmatic man of foreign lineage, who taught her to master her thirst for blood. He was her nearly constant companion as she grew up, and he also taught her to use her body; to step lightly and move with certainty, and when she was older he began to train her in controlling others' bodies, and even a form of graceful, one-handed swordplay- the martial arts of his ancestors' distant homeland.

Growing up with access to the greatest library in the known world, Arden learned to relish books. She read books of all kinds, from historical tomes and records, to books on cooking, magic, philosophy, and the natural world. What interested her most was learning about the world of the past, when people were free to travel and trade and explore; the world outside the safety of Angelscroll's mighty walls.

Appearance: Arden is a relatively small girl, by human standards, slender, and standing barely over 5' tall. Her physique is lean, hard, and supple, conditioned and sculpted by her childhood filled with training and acrobatics. She has smooth grey skin- a color reminiscent of rain clouds, and fierce golden-yellow eyes, for which she was given the nickname "Wolfeyes" by her peers. Her face is ageless and might be described as cherubic; girlish and heart-shaped, but with a sharp little nose and pointed, leaf-shaped ears. Her hair is wavy, and a preternatural pale-blue color, like a clear summer sky; she wears it short, seldom longer than shoulder length. Her body has a general hourglass shape to it, although her curves are relatively subtle, and her bosom is nearly flat.

When she wanders the city, where people aren't used to seeing her natural form, she often relies on simple magic to change her appearance to a nearly identical form, but with light tan skin and black hair. She is currently an official student of the academy.

Personality: Arden grew up with few companions; she played alone for the most part, and found solace in books. She is reserved and skeptical, and generally difficult to make friends with. She is also a true tomboy, perhaps due to being raised almost solely by her foster father and tutor. She can be wild and playful when no one else is watching, and has a fondness for sneaking and climbing. She has little respect for laws in general, and tends to make her own rules, but she has strict personal discipline. She is also very gentle and altruistic, though she may not always show it, and might even come off as arrogant, stubborn, and selfish.

Abilities & Skills: Arden is very strong for her size (not monstrously, but stronger than an average grown man), and possesses more or less preternatural balance and coordination, which have helped to make her a very skilled duelist and acrobat. She is also adept at fighting hand-to-hand, though she's had no real combat experience. She's studied magic on-and-off, and knows a few spells, including one that allows her to change her form in limited, superficial ways, and she has a unique synesthetic ability that causes her to see auras around the undead.

Strength/Weakness: She is knowledgeable about a wide range of topics, and she is an avid stargazer, able to determine such things as time, direction, and season from the night sky. She is physically strong and swift on her feet, but some aspects of her anatomy are actually weaker than a normal human's, meaning that she sometimes suffers from light-headedness and even fainting spells when she overexerts herself. She can see very well in the dark, requiring much less light than a human to see effectively, though in the same vein she finds bright light uncomfortable and overstimulating. Animals tend to enjoy her presence, and she usually prefers their company to that of other people.

[Bolded stuff to make it easier to read.]

Wargtass

I see the siege as a constant thing. As far as the denizens know, all other life in the world is dead, given the extreme amount of undead abominations that restlessly besiege the walls. The landscape around the mountain is blackened and twisted and warmachines and hordes of monstrosities are a constant part of it all the way to the horizons. If you come from the outside world you are probably an orc, troll or other sort of beast which are intelligent but definitively mindless. Anyone who accepts such a companion for a quest down the catabombs must be unhinged in some way.

Speaking of which, since the Tyrant is most likely a great necromancer, vampires count among his minions, often acting as generals or champions. While Arden might be accepted due to her mentor, she'll have a hard time making friends. But somehow I think that's what you are going for. Excellent character!

Name: Tynissa Rosewren
Age: 19
Race: Human

Background: When she was only three Tynissa began to read. Books were easy for her to comprehend and her parents were amazed, but, being poor farmers did not have any way to encourage her or afford to hire a tutor. This didn’t stop the young girl for when she was 7 she began to sneak into the library to read more. Of course, this wasn’t enough for the young girl.

When she learned that there were people in the city that had other books she aimed to learn who they were and how many books they had. She then started to sneak into their homes, stealing away a book to read and then returning it when she grabbed another.

This continued for a few years until she started sneaking into the academy to find even more knowledge.  She wasn’t aware that the academy was guarded in ways she didn’t understand. Or that one she set off those alarms she was being watched by the instructors.  They never stopped her from taking a book. A few even watched to see which books she would take and how much she could understand.  They were all surprised when they saw that she would attempt the spells in the magic books and even more surprised when she would get the spells to work.

Tynissa became one of the youngest students admitted to the school after some of the instructors determined that it would be too dangerous for her to not get proper instruction. Unfortunately, they had not known at the time that she had already developed an affinity for the darker aspects of magic. For her, sneaking into a place to obtain a book was a thrill, as was learning some of the darker spells that those books held.

Personality:
Normally, Tynissa is in her own world. This stems from spending so much time alone reading books. However, she can be an outgoing women and a little bubbly at times, laughing at odd times or her own jokes.

Abilities & Skills: Sorcery/Necromancy
Tynissa has shown a lot of promise in the field of sorcery. From an early age she was able to learn and cast spells. Primarily, she enjoys the aspects of summoning and has started to develop an affinity for necromancy. Something she has started to learn on her own, being afraid the instructors would not want her learning that field since it is what the Great Tyrant uses.
Tynissa has also become a capable thief, for lack of a better term. She can move silently and even hide herself in the shadows and pick locks. She never has attempted to steal something out of someone’s hands or pockets, however.

Strength/Weakness:
Tynissa can read all forms of magic no matter what language they are written in. However, she has problems understanding the power level of any spell and feels that if she can read it she can cast it. Often, this results in bad outcomes.

Her biggest weakness is her temper, often it can get the better of her. Not a jealous person, she does not like to fail. Unfortunately, when things do fail for her her temper will affect her ability to succeed in the next task she attempts.

Vaulera

Name: Adrienna Writlock
Age: 18
Race: High Elf

Background: Adrienna was born a noble, the only daughter in a once prestigious family. As she grew, her family came to recognize her as a savant, adept in magic, but in particular, she had an affinity for the ritual magics of a warlock. The art of conjuring and summoning a powerful being from another plane of existence. It was always something small when she was young, an imp here, at the very largest, a minor water elemental. But what really set her apart as a paragon, was that her minions were willing, not enslaved or bound to her, but followed her willingly, making them even more deadly as a result. Adrienna began to carve summoning circles on medallions and clothing, started creating strange potions no one had ever seen, giving them to her summons and creating pacts. Her strange affinity for the creatures of other planes gave her summons greater power than even that of her professors, a demonologist, conjurer and a noble all at the same time.

Personality: Adrienna is rather arrogant and bold, being born of a very wealthy and prestigious family and tends to spend a large portion of her time with her summons, giving her a skewed social outlook, relating more to monsters and beings of shadow than the regular people or magi of the academy.

Abilities & Skills: Adrienna is foremost a demonologist: one who researches demons and creatures of other planes, giving her a knowledge of the darker nuances of summoning and alchemy, secrets lost to those who aren't like her, a demon friend. She is also a conjurer of the highest caliber, but the word doesn't accurately describe her relationship with those she summons, they follow her with a zeal and fervor, willingly, often speaking with her and sharing knowledge. Her favorite companion to conjure is an intelligent and savage Alp by the name of Kyrick.

Strength/Weakness: Adrienna's greatest asset is her wide range and largely powerful repertoire of pacts and demons she can call to aid her, from a large dire wolf to a malevolent storm spirit. Her weakness lay in her complete reliance upon her  demon allies, not very well practiced in other forms of magic, her physical strength being minute and her only power besides summoning in potions and a few demonic spells.

Thank you, I'm glad it works.  ;D

So, the world has been a grim and ugly place, full of enemies, for as long as anyone can remember, but can we assume that records exist from before then that tell of the times before the coming of the Great Tyrant?

Also, is the quote section of the character sheet supposed to be like the character's motto, or more of a line that sums up their personality?

Wargtass

Strangely enough, there have been very little records from the time before the Great Tyrant found. Why this is no one knows. The most mysterious part of it all is that even the oldest of elves cannot remember the Better Days. What little there is have been found in the catacombs and taken back to the libraries.

As for the quote, see it as a way to summarize your character with a single sentence. One should be able to have a quick look at it and understand what kind of a person he/she is.

Looks like Adrienna and Tynissa have some similar magic talents.  Could be a lot of fun.

FragarachZ

I was planning to roll a half-demon/tiefling type of character (they need love too).

If Vaulera would be up for it, we could assume my character was summoned (and perhaps bound) by Adrienna to be her bodyguard?

Since the team is made of females so far and two of them spellcasters, I'll take a martial role and a male character just to have variety (was ready roll in a female cleric or paladin too).
O&O

Vaulera

I am against that for a few reasons, foremost among them is that Adrienna wouldn't summon a half demon, only full demons, something that lives in a different plane and secondly, most of the monster I would want her to summon wouldn't be there permanently, just renewable, making your character drop in and out of the roleplay with frequency.

Wargtass

Unless he of course is a failure. Perhaps he was one of her earlier experiments into the arts of the warlock.

So far I am pretty happy with your thoughts, you all obviously like being suspicious people who in some way can be connected to the Great Tyrant.  ;D
O/O

Arioch

Actually, that could fall into some Tynissa did. She might have made an attempt to summon something else, was prepared for it and got that instead.

Caela

Looking things over, this game looks like a lot of fun! I'll work up a character sheet and see what y'all think of it. :)

Caela

The other characters written up seem to be a bit dark and suspicious, with the ability to swing toward either good or evil...thought it might make a nice contrast to make a character firmly allied to one side. She can easily be tweaked if she doesn't work for the story, just let me know. Oh if the anime pictures are preferred I can find one, I tend to use rl models and actresses just out of personal preference.

Name: Lyra
Age: 315 (appears early 20's)
Race: Shapeshifter

Background: Born in Angelscroll, Lyra remembers nothing but a life under siege. Her life has always been restricted by the army outside the gates of their small part of the world. Both of her parents, however, could remember the world before the Tyrant and her childhood fairy tales consisted of stories of such a world, of a world where they could travel freely, could leave Angelscroll and hunt the forests and mountains around it...a world that wasn't perfect, but that was better than the one they now had. They used their stories to fill their daughter with hope for the future and to teach her right from wrong.

As a child she didn't really know she was any different from the other human children around her. She looked like them when she ran through the city streets, played their games, spoke their language, learned the same lessons they did, aged as they did...until her 25th year. Her parents had actually hoped she had been born without her mother's gift/curse but when she was 25 they found, the hard way, that she hadn't escaped after all.

Wandering the city at night she rounded a corner and stumbled into a group of drunken louts out seeking trouble who decided that "playing" with the pretty girl out for a walk would be fun. Trapped between them, fearing for her safety and her life, adrenaline and a host of hormones flared through her body and without thought, between being groped by one young man, having her clothing torn, and shoved to next she simply changed. There was no cracking of bones, no cries of pain, just a flash of anger and fear through her brain and suddenly where the girl had been there was a large black dog, it's lips pulled back, fangs bared, and a low, menacing growl filling it's throat.

Terrified by the sudden change the drunks ran off into the night leaving a confused Lyra stuck in a shape she wasn't sure how she had attained...or how to change out of!

The next 150 years saw her, under the tutelage of her mother who was also a Shifter, learning how to control her changes. Learning how to change at will, change back, choose her shapes at will and based on need and desire, not just on fear. When her Mother had nothing else to teach her, she applied to the academy to have her daughter trained even further there. She knew that Lyra would be able to learn more about what she was, and what she was capable of, inside the walls of the academy with all their books and knowledge, now that she had nothing left to teach her.

Personality: Lyra is a sweet, thoughtful, intelligent girl. She also has a wicked sense of humor and an appreciation for the subtle use of sarcasm. She treats people with respect and basic courtesy until they prove they don't deserve it and trusts easily, though once her trust is lost it is nearly impossible to truly regain. Many people don't realize that under the sweet demeanor there is also a wicked temper. She doesn't rant or rave, she waits, bides her time, and takes her vengeance only when those who earn her ire are no longer expecting it.

Abilities & Skills: Her chief ability is in changing her shape. If she's seen a creature she can become it. The exception being other sentient being. She could change her own looks if she wanted to (changing hair and eye color, subtle changes in facial structure etc.) but she can't make herself look like a replica of someone else.

Mundane skills include a beautiful singing voice, an ability to play the harp as if it were a part of her soul, she's an excellent cook and she's had decades to perfect her needlepoint (a skill she found useless when her mother first started making her learn but that she now finds a wonderful means of relaxing because she's reached the point where she can sew almost anything without really thinking about it.)

Strength/Weakness: She's stronger than she appears though not quite as strong as a fully grown man. She also has great skill with a bow and sword courtesy of lessons from her father who was a soldier.

Weaknesses include the fact that she can be far too trusting of other people and the fact that she lacks an affinity for most magic beyond her ability to change her shape. She can cast spells but the energy needed to do so can leave her anywhere from slightly dizzy to unconscious depending on the complexity and power of the spell.

Quote: All knowledge is worth having.

**With her ability to change shapes she'd make an excellent little spy. She could, literally, be the fly on the wall! lol**

FragarachZ

Ok, how about this?

Name: Tess Hillsbury
Age: 19
Race: Human

Background: Tess was born as second daughter of a lesser noble house. At a young age she was given to Lord Hafgan, the High Priest of the god of war who teaches at the academy, because of her rebellious and impulsive personality. Hafgan disciplined her and made her into a priestess of the war god... what is more, she showed an affinity in receiving her deity's blessings and channeling his power. She grew up according to the teachings of the lord of conflict, and is a devoted servant and warrior-priestess. As part of her initiation to the shield-maiden order, she was volunteered into the expedition group to the catacombs below the academy.

Personality: Tess is a collected, calm personality - nothing like her younger self. Ironically she found peace in the teachings of war, and accepted the truths within: the constant struggle for survival is what keeps people strong. Without challenges to overcome, they would corrupt and rot away in peace. However, this understanding doesn't make her crave battle: the true understanding of war and conflict comes with the knowledge of when it is necessary to fight, and when it should be avoided. When it comes down to steel and spells however, she becomes wild and merciless, like the calm sea during storms.
She offers her sword arm and her ability to call on her deity's blessings to the group of explorers to help them overcome their challenge.

Abilities & Skills:  She has an athletic figure, but is far from as strong as a trained soldier: half of her training was spent on studying and meditation, the other on physical education. Her studies allow her to recognize otherworldly creatures and phenomena, and with the necessary materials and time she could dispel most of these. She can also petition her god to heal the physical wounds of herself or her allies, but this ability has its limits, as contact with a powerful supernatural being is taxing on her spirit.

Strength/Weakness:  Tess is a vessel of her gods might and her physical strength and endurance are reinforced to match that of the hardiest of soldiers. Her prayers in battle are also answered, and probability seems to warp around her: attacks that were meant to hit her are deflected, and her blade finds an opening in enemies defenses more often. As a side effect of this, her presence can increase the morale of her allies. That said, all of her exceptional abilities are of divine nature, and are only as powerful as her faith and conviction. Should she doubt herself in a critical situation, her abilities could falter, leaving her only an ordinary woman against whatever dangers she faces.[/b]

What kind of fantasy backgrounds do people have? I'm smelling a lot of dungeons and dragons. I was hoping the Diablo 3 crowd had taken a breather to engage in some potentially smutty role play.

I'm a long time D&D player, but I basically grew up on fantasy of all kinds. I've played through Diablo 3, and also its predecessors. I'm a big fan of anime and video games from The Witcher to the Final Fantasy games to the Legacy of Kain series. I'm also a big fan of Touhou Project, and recently, the MLP:FiM universe.

I've read a lot of sword & sorcery and other fantasy novels too, from the Drizzt books to A Song of Ice and Fire and many others.

Sadly no Diablo 3. Have heard too many bad things to throw away my money on it. As for my fantasy background it starts with the swedish Drakar & Demoner, goes through 2nd-4th edition DnD, through some other swedish stuff such as Eon, then back around to Pathfinder. I am pretty much the old school roleplayer, have been since who knows when. The "European Model" of roleplay is more aimed towards character driven action and actual role-play while the "American Model" is more the typical DnD-session... which is utter bull, but that's what was cramed into our heads back in the 90's over here. As such I only played DnD.2 before I reached my senses and started sampling other american games. Boy was I mad at whoever made up that model-bullshit!

As for fantasy in general I don't like it, and when I do, I like it real gritty and dark. Fantasy in general is a hard thing for me to appreciate. I had to really try hard to make it through the three LotR-books when the movies were about to get started and pretty much anything by Hobb makes me puke fantasy-colored candy all over. Thus far the only fantasy-novels I have really appreciated were the SoDaI-series and Discworld-series (the ones following Samuel Vimes have an especially gritty tone to its satire).

In games I am not much different. Dragon Age 2 came as a real surprise to me, especially since I never liked the first one. The Elder Scrolls I think have reached its peak in Skyrim and it's lowest with Oblivion, with a good game in Morrowind. Otherwise fantasy-games just doesn't do anything for me. Diablo 2 is a fun one with a bunch of friends, but that's about it.

On the table top battlefields however, I have found quite a few really good fantasy settings. The Warhammer Fantasy and Confrontation games are especially rich in background and grittyness. Good times!

I generally stay away from anime and manga, their fantasy epics tend to be very epic indeed. Can't really say I have found anything I particularly like around those parts.

And that's about it for my fantasy background! I am more of a SciFi/Horror buff, but I greatly enjoy GMing the occasional gritty fantasy. But expect some really visceral scenes down the catacombs now and then with some subtle horror elements crammed into that fantasy of yours!

On another point, I kinda feel we have an overabundance of magic users. Like... enough magic users.

My background started with 1st ed AD&D and then moved into 2nd ed. However, I have also ventured in Role Master and Palladium.  I've even gone into Gurps and helped play test a game that may get released in a few years (if it can work out the kinks).  Warhammer fantasy, the miniature game, was a blast, but, I hated that it got updated every couple years. I liked running chaos and by the time the compendium would come out, a new edition would be coming out.

Since there are so many spell casters, and there is one that is similar in abilities to mine, I am going to think about a different character idea. That doesn't mean I will come up with one, but, we'll see.

Roxy Rocket

Okay, based on those responses and the other characters I think I'll withdraw. I don't think we're going to be overlapping on much here.

Arioch

Roxy,  I think you have a good character idea and shouldn't withdraw.  Your character has an interesting personality and I think it would make a fun character to watch.

Wartass made me want to opt for a Shoray
I'm in the mood to use a custom race that, when you look at them on the surface, look like they'd make you puke rainbows. they look like slightly fluffy sheeplike humanoids, they have a musicans nack, and would be best understood by listening to the "provincal town" song from beauty and the beast.

But once you scratch the surface the Shoray are terrifying, Shoray villages have a group subconsious which while it doesn't force them, it nudges them to naturally stay "in groove" with the rest of the town even the muggers and thieves are part of that group subconsious. When threatened or whipped up into a war-frenzy by racial leaders and psions called Silvermanes they naturally organize and can lay waste to an entire area simmilar to warhammer orcs going on a WAAAGH. though the conditions that cause them to "sing of war" is diffrent, and they are far more organized, the principal is the same.

they were inspired by a sci-fi short storyabout a man going to a future amish/mideval style paradise where everything was perfect and peaceful, but the locals would go ruthlessly psychotic at night and eliminate any threats to their paradise, then not remember and go on living their happy lives.
the same 4'3 "knights" that at a joust threw flowers at each other instead of using lances and who had rained with but never used a sword, tried to ride him down him with lances their day selves didn't even know existed.

anyways I had the idea of a shoray silvermane joining the acadamy, and thank you Wargtass for reminding me of them.

well you would laugh at them when you first saw the fluffy cute sheep people singing and moving almost as if coreographed in tune as they worked, being all cheery, happy, and productive.

hearing them switch to a more rapid, booming, militaristic tune producing weapons and armor, or watching twelve of them stab a troll to death in perfect rythem to keep the blows coming like notes of music, might be more scary.

No pics fit the Shoray.

Name: Amato Andrea Angelo
Age: 18
Race: Shoray

Appearance 4'5 he resembles a little cute puffy ram man at first glance. first glance is all you get. leaving aside the muscle that is hidden by fur, his arms and chest are scarred including a gash up his right arm, usually carrying a cleaver like blade as tall as he is if not slightly more so. His small horns spiral and are not useful for combat, his hair is unkempt, curly, and silver as the rest of him. he often paints his face with blue warpaint, a cultural tradition in the industiral quarters. lastly Amato is never seen without his greatsword, the one with the wolf's head pommel.

Background: Born in the Shoray slums near the outter walls,  Amato was a toublesome child, as all Silvermanes are when born to normal shoray parents. he often fought, stole, or spent his days working with his father and mother in the great foundries. However he was eventually sent the the academy as all Silvers are. There he showed great potental with sword and martial arts, and there the warpriests tried to hammer him into a warpriest, the combat and tactical teachings took, but the faith part did not. thus his extended training was done dealing with direct combat, using a bit of song magic to back up his skill with a greatsword.
When put up aganst a demon for his final exam it grabbed and melted his training weapon, in the same grapple he bit it's eye and ripped it's leg off, then proceeded to bulgeon and stab it to dath with it's own carapace. When asked why he responded. "demon chitin, harder than steel, and she had clawed toes. decent spear if a bit unwieldy."
he volenteered for the expiditon, to "do some good and do some good instead of standing around."

Personality: Amato is anythin but calm, raised among a passionate and tightly knit community, one who seem uneasy, but stubborn like the goats they resemble. So dispite his size he is a hothead who never cooled down dispite his learning at the academy. Somewhere between berzerking knight and singing psychopath. He loves music with a passion. he goes into combat laughing and singing as the gore splatters and the limbs fly.  He often displays great intelligence and reasoning dispite his normally simple nature, and is an avid reader.

Abilities & Skills: Song and Sword
in additon to being a powerful and fast dispite his stature and physique his songs have magicical properties such as causing regeneration of reflecting damage. he also has an encyclopedic knowlage of materals and weapons and anatomy

Strength/Weakness: dispite his size he has amazing strengh which is more mind over matter than just muscle, and combined with his training in weapons he is a truely deadly combatant. His experences do not lend themselves towards traditional magic, and it is against that that he comes up wanting. he doesn't understand magic, he knows what a mage bolt or fireball is, but cannot use magic save for potions and songs.

If this is still open, I'd like to submit a character.

Name: Liam Graeson
Age: 19
Race: Human

Background:
Born the son of a soldier, Liam had expected to grow up in the ranks of the guards who kept Angelscroll safe from the Great Tyrant. So he worked hard at his lessons, learning to fight with spear, sword and axe. What h hadn't counted on was catching the eye of one of the Acadamy's sword mistresses when he was 12, who had been observing the practice session of the next generation of guards. When practice was done, he and a handful of other students were brought to her quarters. They were given a practice sword, and told to to fight. A little confused at first, the began.

Liam managed to hold his ground despite having to face a number of non-humans, like elves, dwarves and even a young half-demon. Somehow, he held his ground. he didn't know exactly how he managed to do this, since even today that fight seemed like a half remembered dream, but he was one of the least three standing, along with a pair of elven sisters, who began attacking him. However, the Sword mistress called a halt, and informed the stunned trio that she would be taking person charge of their martial education.

In the seven years since, Liam has only grown in skill, favoring a lighter bastard sword as his main weapon, though he has no small talent in the use of other weapons, like dagger fighting, fencing or the great clash of Zweihanders. He has taken part in battles every year since he was 16
and big enough to fill out a spare suit of mail armour.

Personality: Liam is a very straightforward individual, often taking the direct route to his problems. Of course, this doesn't mean he is incapable of deep thought, any ideas that he didn't need to think were beaten out of him by his Mistress. He simply preferred not to.

Abilities & Skills: After being trained by one of the sword mistresses of the Academy, Liam is one of the best human swordsmen in Angelscroll, possessing skill in every form of bladed combat. He has incredible (for a human) endurance, as a result of long hours of training and trying to keep up with the three elves (The Mistress and the sisters), as well as strong arms, shoulders and wrists from his weapons practice.

Strength/Weakness: He is relatively inexperienced at dueling, which he perceives to be the height of his abilities, having only taken part in the massive scrums of a battle, where he never struck the same foe more than twice. He also has nearly no magical ability, or knowledge of anything other than swordfighting beyond a very basic grasp.
tl;dr: He is inexperienced in 1-1 fights and can't do much besides fight.

Drake Valentine

Name:
Kuro & Minx
Age:
Appears in their twenties. (Actual age is unknown, though it is believed they been haunting the catacombs for as long as it had been there.)
Race:
Bakenekos
Background:
The fable ghost kitties,  there has been rumors of such things at the Academy; in the past some senior students used stories regarding such as a means to scare the younger ones or tales the teachers may of once passed on. It is hard to say where the stories always include ‘Kuro’ and ‘Minx,’ no doubt they may of popped up in variations, although the majority of the tales did rise on facts in regards to the bakenekos themselves from what surviving teachers had witness and not just on Kuro and Minx.

The duo of felines were never formally aligned with the academy, like most monstrous creatures they lived in the catacombs with the rest of various monstrosities and evil fiends. They played tricks on poor adventurers, killed and even eaten students in the past. Their fondest of memories(before their affiliation change) was turning adventurers into zombies, and basking in the amusement that followed shortly afterwards of students killing their own.

It wasn’t till a small band of spell casters caught the duo. Necromancy bounded them, an enchantress wished to keep the two ghost kitties as pets. A warlock wished to experiment on them and the Necromancer wanted to control them just as well. Though in the end they all had a turn, allying their desires; but the felines wouldn’t be so easily controlled without a fail safe, thus the magic users created a collar of sorts for the both of them. These rare and enchanted items remains on them even today, limiting the males spiritual capabilities by always forcing them to revert to a physical form once they reach a certain peak of magical essence.

Even as they outlived their captors, they have been more or less imprisoned in this state. The collars are special in their own right as well, spiritual form will not remove them, nor can they be physically or magically tampered with.

From their time of freedom they spent many years spiritually or physically in the catacombs, searching for some relic to free themselves. There has been also few reported incidents through the archives of the school’s history where other adventurers found some strange and sensible humanoids down below; even brought them to the surface(of course these episodes are also distant between one another when the events had taken place, so the majority never realize that it was the same ‘nekos’ being taken to the academy.)

Kuro and Minx are not allies to the Academy, in fact it is more of a mutual interest that they shared. Where the students searched for things to aid them in battle, the bakenekos look for something to free them from the ancestor students that had imprisoned them and their powers. All that potential ghostliness of theirs now wasted due to those blasted collars around their necks; and as a result it has been the death of them on multiple occasions when they were forced into humanoid living form.

Personality:
Kuro
Energetic, carefree, bold, ruthless. Kuro is your typical brute, first to act, last to think out the consequences or possibilities of outcome. He speaks freely and without restraint, you won’t find him sugar coating his words or his intentions in that matter. He doesn’t care who he may offend or who he may go up against, often taking his own ‘immortal’ state for granted and usually being the first to revert back to his spiritual form through some incident or another as a result. He is greedy by a fault and usually predicable with his body language and also highly prone to curiosity. Gullible as well, often finding himself taken advantage or tricked into things by his twin brother, Minx.

Minx
Solitary, scheming, manipulative, charming, Minx has all the makings of a rogue. Unlike his brother, he would rather cut someone down with words, use his intelligence to get his way out of a sticky situation, or find an alternative solution than the concept of violence. If he can’t, well, he has his brother to do most of the fighting for him or others to fill that place; not to be mistaken that Minx is anything incapable of handling himself, he just chooses to generally avoid it altogether unless it is a last result.

Both of them hate magic users to a fault, Minx won’t admit it but Kuro will.

Abilities & Skills:
All bakeneko abilities in their spiritual forms.

Kuro Humanoid:
Offensive Martial Arts
Destructive Energy Manipulation
Stealth
Acrobatics

Minx Humanoid:
Defensive Martial Arts
Analyzing(Monsters, lock picking, trap detection)
Stealth
Tactics

Strength/Weakness:
Spiritual Form
+Can pass through most objects (Come on they’re ghosts.)
-Magical areas are usually harder to pass through.
+Immunity to physical attacks
-Magic and Exorcism seems effective(but how many monsters will use the latter?)
+Cool Ghostly Mischief
-Can’t really physically interact with most of the world otherwise. (Collar limitation)
Human Form:
+Nothing super impressive beyond they’re skills and abilities.
-Death by anything.

Other Facts:
-Kuro is more athletic and ‘brutish’ whereas Minx is more intelligent and graceful.
-Kuro and Minx cannot 'freely' revert to spiritual or living human forms.
-Kuro and Minx are automatically forced into a living humanoid form when they collect enough energy, willingly or not.
-Kuro and Minx's collar cannot be easily removed, whether physically or magical experimental means.
-When killed in human form they just revert back to their spiritual state. (With a corpse left behind, questionable, debatable.)
-When killed in spirit form they are dead-dead. (As in nonexistence dead. )

Quote:
Kuro: “I wonder what will happen if I press this….”
Minx: “Luckily I am never prone to boredom as I find myself surrounded by stupidity wherever I go.”

Of course I did. Now, all of you will be reading whatever I write for this character in Liam Neeson's soft Irish accent.

Funny story, I watched the Les Miserable film he starred in, and then read the book. No matter how often I reminded myself that all the characters were French, Jean Val Jean was always speaking in a soft Irish accent. Made the book much better for some reason.

Is this still open? And would a rogue reptilian humanoid from the Outside who apparently is suffering from memory loss be an option?

It's good to see that there's so much interest in this, but how many players/characters are we going for here?

Arioch

OK, here is a replacement idea for Tynissa.

Name: Merrick Quickhand
Age: 20
Race: Human

Background: The city has a number of different types of units to defend the people. The first line is the guards atop the walls. Trained to repel the attackers and keep them from breeching and moving into the city. But, if they were to fail the next line is a group of warriors trained to fight within the city streets themselves. They are practiced in working individually or in small teams to harass the enemy and let the main defenders re-group to launch a large attack and push back the fiends.

Early on, Merrick showed promise in fighting. He wasn’t muscular like many that were chosen for manning the walls. But he was quick and agile, thus he was selected for the skirmishers. When his instruction was given it was evident that he was able to adapt to changing environments, using unnatural terrain to his advantage. He also showed promise with multiple weapons, able to use anything he found as an improvised tool to defeat his enemy.

When the academy selected him for additional training he chose the two scimitars as his preferred weapons. Hours of instruction helped to perfect his technique. And even though he was often instructed indoors, he still used all of the training room to his advantage, jumping in the corners to flip behind the attackers and gain the advantage or using obstacles to act as shields.

Personality: Merrick is a bit cocky, knowing that he is expected to give his life in defense of the city it gives him a sense of indifference. He can be quick with a joke or even a statement of seriousness depending on the situation.

Abilities & Skills: Gymnastics unlike any other, ability to use two weapons at once and can climb walls with just his feet up to 10’ in height.

Strength/Weakness: His gymnastics ability is his greatest strength, allowing him to flip over or dodge around an opponent. Unfortunately, for him to be able to use his skills he cannot wear anything more than basic leather clothing leaving him with little protection from surprise attacks.

No need to throw away Tynissa, I liked her.

I also like the little fluffy thing (being an old school ork-player I know how that Waaagh! calls you sometimes) as well as the bakenekos, a good way to incorporate a bit of sadistic glee into it all.

As for the player count I'll hear Saric out on his concept and then no more. So you could change the subject to no slots available, full or whatever fancy you.

Now Saric, this better be a damn good concept to make me change my mind about characters from outside the walls...  ;D
O/O

Arioch

Since there seemed to be a run of magic users, as well as those that liked to summon, I thought Tynissa wasn't necessary and there were those that are better than her. Since this is an adventure for some of the best, I figured a replacement would be in order.

I'll leave it up to those already assembled. Should I keep Tynissa or bring in Merrick?

Koyume

Well, the most important thing is that you play a character you feel comfortable with. That said, I kind've liked Tynissa's background more. An alternative, to avoid stepping on the toes of our other summoner, might be to focus more on necromancy or some other kind of magic instead.

Arioch

I like both characters, but, I agree with you that Tynissa has a more fleshed out background.  She could be a better necromancer, which would explain why her summoning spells usually go wrong.

Ironwolf85

I will keep Amato, I've got a shory picture being drawn by a comissioned artist, if it turns out right I will put it up.

Well if the idea works for you I'd like to discuss his actual past via PM, after all if he doesn't know it until the big reveal (if such ever happens) why should anyone else?

But the basic idea is simple. He showed up outside the city gate roughly three or four years ago covered in wounds and with an actual spear sticking out of his back, the tip only inches from his heart. He seems to have some skill with both weapons and some basic combat magics but it works basically on instinct, his earliest memory is of waking up feeling rather sick inside some kind of desecrated temple with some unknown being in robes standing over him with a rather unpleasant ceremonial knife raise to take his heart. Proving both faster and stronger then the robed one he disarms it and tries to find out what is going on, but all he learns is that he is to be sacrificed in a necromantic ritual to raise new undead troops for the Tyrant's next attack... including his own corpse. He had just enough time to find out where this place the Tyrant is attacking is (the School) before the guards break in. The rest of that day becomes a confused blur of fighting, running and hiding before collapsing outside the School gates. While he has been admitted to the grounds many think he is a spy, though some admit that even he may not know he is one, others believe he should be cast out or killed on general principle. All magical attempts to restore his memory or divine his nature or origin have failed... except that it has been learned that his lost memory is do to some kind of incredibly powerful domination magic, magic which surpasses any known by the teachers but which some believe a second exposure to could restore his mind. Ever since he has petitioned to join one of the expeditions below in hopes of finding some such magic, but those in positions of power who distrust him have blocked such permission and, desperate as he has become, he's not foolish enough to explore the depths alone. However, finally, he has at long last been granted permission to join the next batch of students on their final exam, and if most of them are the kind of outcasts that would not be terribly missed, and he should happen to get them all killed or die with them well... accidents happen in the depths...

MzHyde

Name: Myra Maybelle "Belle" Starr
Age: 23
Race: Human

Background: The Starr family line is said to be one of the oldest in Angelscroll, a line of knights and warriors that have long stood to defend the gates from the Tyrant's brutal onslaught. But the endless siege has devastated the once sprawling family as offspring die in either the catacombs below, during sieges, or of natural causes. Myra Maybelle 'Belle' is the last of the bloodline. Like her ancestors, Belle showed a talent for swordplay and strategy early on in her life. To her, combat is a chess match. You move your pieces and sometimes you have to sacrifice a pawn to capture a king. Sometimes you must suffer a minor injury to strike a fatal blow. Her fighting style emphasizes this principle: she will trick and opponent by pretending to leave her guard open and may even subject herself to a minor wound in order to strike a killing blow. This carries over to her studies in tactics as well. Though her instructors balk at her methods, her proposed tactics in class would often lead to an overwhelming victory. This attitude has earned her some scorn from her peers at the academy, but none can doubt her raw talent and intelligence. But is she straying too far from her noble roots? Will she learn that soldiers are not just pawns, but people? Is it right to sacrifice someone even if it means victory and life for a greater number? The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. ...Or is there another way? When the next siege comes, Belle will be called to the front lines, called to lead her own troops. What will happen to those under her command?

Personality: Belle is a surprisingly warm and friendly woman outside of class and training. She greets her friends with a smile and pays little heed to her detractors. Indeed, outside of class it is hard to imagine that this is a woman who would manipulate a battlefield with cold precision. In class or training, however, she is calculating and fixated solely on the task at hand. She is always calm and collected and seems to be in control of the situation - even if she is losing - which can be a tad unnerving for some. Once, while outmatched during a spar with a fellow student, he dropped his sword and surrendered because she looked so confident that he was sure she had something brutal planned.

Abilities & Skills: Excellent swordswoman, genius strategist, good archery skills, extremely cunning.

Strength/Weakness: Belle's greatest strengths revolve around combat and planning. She is an extremely formidable one-on-one opponent and can even handle multiple opponents in combat with some ease. At commanding troops and planning attacks, she is unmatched - especially in open field battles. However, she has never commanded troops during a real siege. All of her experience thus far is fighting on the front lines under the command of someone else. Next time, however, she will be in charge of her own troops. Her attitude has caused her to have a negative reputation at the academy, and while some can see the logic in her methods, others call her cold hearted and may refuse her command.

Gentlemen, I think I'll take back my interest on this. I couldn't think in a interesting character that would suit this game well. Apologies for any trouble that I may have caused. Thank you all and have fun with this game!
