Elusive Isles Chapter 1: A Part of Something Greater

Adventurers Wanted!

Poor? Tired? Downtrodden?

Step right up, the land of opportunity awaits you!

Back, out of the fog! It's here! The Elusive Isles of legend!

Are you yet another hard done by adventurer? A temporarily out of work legendary dragon-slayer to be? Wielder of great weapons and reaper of untold riches? Look no further, my friend. The Sharktooth Sea Mercenary Co. is here for you, ready to provide the work you want for the riches you deserve. We have exclusive ships headed right to the Elusive Isles! What's there? Untold Riches! You know you deserve to conquer the Isles!

Overview

The Elusive Isles is a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Adventure. It will be placed under the Extreme boards solely to give the capacity to cover dark content if it comes up. That being said the game is not a smut game in any way. Any encounters of that nature will be given a separate thread. The game will focus on a group of inexperienced adventurers who have seen the opportunity to join a Mercenary Company and find garunteed work on the Elusive Isles, before having a dose of misfortune that ties an unlikely band together.

The game will begin with a group of heroes who've recently left Heroes Landing, either forcibly or through choice. I'll be aiming to create a group of down on their luck heroes who want to become something more. When they meet they will have to travel the wild of Crahyt Island, finding both work and rest and eventually a place to call home. The game will then heavily feature aspects of kingdom building, creating a living world which the players and characters are invested in growing into a town, city, kingdom or even empire.

If you are interested in joining this game feel free to post here or PM me, there's a small form to fill out before we get to character sheets, so I can balance the group.

In summary players will experience:
1. An initial group adventure in Crahyt Island's wilderness learning to be a group, finding work and shelter and forming a plan.
2. The selection of a location and setup of some kind of camp or home, or the takeover of someone else's.
3. The creation of an expanding hub, heavily driven by the assembled character's goals as they explore and interact with the isles. After this point the game will be driven by a mixture of GM and player, with both the world reacting to player choices and causing events as well as players attempting to achieve their character's goals.

Note: This game/setting have been used before. The setting remains largely the same but I have created a more focused goal-oriented campaign for the player's characters to take part in. I think this will give more drive to the game, and help unify the party. The game used to be set in a distant area of the forgotten realms but it is now a wholly original setting. Any mention of the Sword Coast or Forgotten Realms is a missed alteration, and I'd appreciate being told. Religions, Gods and classes that involve realms or beings need to be figured out with me. There'll be a functional equivalent for everything.

The Elusive Isles are the star of the Sharktooth sea. A set of strange islands that are often unreachable due to a thick, all encompassing fog they are particularly diverse and chaotic, bringing together powerful beasts and nations that inevitably lead to riches. Despite the huge danger there are many who believe greatness awaits them on the island. It frequently attracts the reckless, painfully optimistic or just plain desperate who are willing to pay good gold to disappear forever. This year the Sharktooth Sea Mercenary Co. has managed to monopolize travel to the Isles, buying out the competition and recruiting from all across the shores. Their leader is charismatic and bold despite selling tickets to almost certain doom to foolhardy mercenaries. They have even begun hosting huge festivals to honor those 'Heroic' enough to head to the Isles, primarily to spread publicity.

Many believe there is more to the Isles than some mad, reckless adventure, but the financial power of the Sharktooth Co. is so vast that the organisations who might care to research this place are forced to join up as adventurers regardless of who they really are. The boats themselves leave almost non stop, and bring very few survivors back. Most of the docks are flooded with transports, with parties and feasts for the leaving heroes. Kral's Landing is the small port town our adventurers left from, headed to Heroes Landing on the Elusive Isles. All of them signed on, for one reason or another, to become a part of this journey. They attended the feast of the brave, a festival held in honor of those bold or insane enough to leave for the Elusive Isles. Here they celebrate their last time in a peaceful land before heading out to such a dangerous place. And now they have just made it to the port of Heroes Landing and are ready to begin exploration.

It is a fairly small and simple town ruled only by gold and mercenary skill. The rich and elite are successful adventurers who have retired, now running their own businesses and providing bounties to other up and coming adventurers. It is overseen by a human mayor, Mayor Stronghill, who is a blunt man who tends to mock any signs of cowardice. At his worst he can put down the scholarly or intelligent while focusing only on more warlike talents. At best he is a keenly intelligent expert in the field of business, and runs the town as though it is one. He knows rookies well and always makes sure everyone has a paying task, whether they're happy with the level he thinks they belong at or not. His rules are enforced by the town guards, captained by the Orc Zugro. Zugro is a tough and abrasive orc, but he does his job very well and is a surprisingly capable detective. Perhaps more due to his willingness to beat information out of people, but he is undeniably effective.

Most stores are run by former adventurers who used their wealth to purchase property and goods, and they will often have posters requesting goods be ferried to them by adventurers for monetary reward. These can be anything from the pelts of wolves that worry the butcher's stock to dragon scales for the alchemists latest mad idea. Currently there is a permanent bounty on Necromancers, Ettin and Hill Giants that will be paid out by the townsfolk. They band together to create a fund to pay for skilled hunters to rid them of their issues and currently they are plagued by the undead and giants. Of course both bounties are easier heard than accomplished, as the giants are very powerful and highly aggressive while the necromancers lair is in a town entirely populated by undeath.

The Sharktooth Coast

The Sharktooth coast is a vast coastline surrounding the Elusive Isles. It is home to many unique kingdoms but all share one thing in particular. A large respect for adventure, bravery and curiosity. These traits are always encouraged in citizens of all the nations. To the South East, where our heroes launched from, is the Kingdom of Treovell. It is a kingdom of man, primarily, and a very water bound nation. Their navy is by far the mightiest, owned by the Sharktooth Mercenary Co. who are based in Treovell. While there might be a king his power is paltry in comparison with the Sharktooth Co. who own the mercenary military and navy. The Co.'s wealth is vast enough that they may as well own the nation, and while they are greedy they are at least respected for getting things done and encouraging heroics. The money and quality of warrior they bring in has turned Treovell from a waning kingdom to the mightiest power on the Sharktooth Coast. Most major cities are coastal and society is based around honor and boldness, but also very focused on money and acquiring personal wealth. The land is fairly rocky and inhospitable, perhaps explaining why farming is not a viable method of income and the nation runs on the back of sellswords.

Directly South of the Isles, bordering Treovell to the West, is the Orcish lands. Nicknamed the Roughlands it is certainly controlled by the mighty. Little is considered to be of value but personal might, and the land has a huge population of Orcs, Hobgoblins and Ogres. While it is owned by the Orcs the cities do have other humanoid populations, who are treated with respect if they can be strong and fit in with the brutish culture. It is not a place that welcomes the intelligent, forward thinking or witty. Despite their reputation the roughlands rarely war with other nations, preferring bloodsports and great hunts on their own land. It is ideal for their society that the land is inhabited by particularly nasty wildlife, second only to what lives on the Elusive Isles. Many aspiring hunters travel to the Roughlands to practice their skill hunting Roughlands Hill Giants or Chimera.

In the west there is a large desert, stretching from the west of the Roughlands all the way up to the North coast. It is controlled by Kibaetis Dynasty, who have ruled for millenia. While it is an old and very large kingdom the Dynasty is not particularly powerful or wealthy. The desert they dwell in is a very hard environment to find any success in, and tends to make just getting by difficult. Most citizens dwell in a few large cities which outsize anything in the other nations by far but the overall population is low due to the hundreds of miles of uninhabited desert. The cities are famed for their trade, buying and selling the goods of other nations in a fairly luxurious environment. It is by far the best nation to make money for a savvy businessman, and one that values cunning over brutality.

Up on the North coast the desert sharply turns to a flat tundra before meeting a vast mountain range. Up there in the snow and ice dwell the Goldheart Kingdom. The Dwarves in the mountains are a greedy folk one and all, mining out the mountains and trading their wealth with the other nations. They live in law and order with strict rules and a powerful land based military to keep the population under control. They are welcoming to others, trading with them by fireside under the mountains. Their skill is undeniable and they often supply the best weapons and armor other nations possess. After forging the Navy of the Sharktooth Co. they have a good deal of wealth and a close alliance. Dwarvish culture is a simple life, focused on honoring ancestors and respecting the mountain life.

Just below the mountains on the East coast is a forest. It is snowy at the top, below the mountains, but lowers to a fairly reasonable climate. It is not ruled by any one kingdom but is the home of the Elves. They prefer to live in a more simple society, avoiding the politics and disagreements other nations are liable to experience. The only real law enforced is that of respect for nature and the wild. Needless hunting is a sure way to be chased down by the Elves, but any who have respect for the forest will be perfectly welcome. Below that the small nation of Othary. It is a melting pot of races and peoples, much like their southern neighbors Treovell. Othary used to be considerably wealthier as it has much more viable farmland however since Treovell's recent rise to riches Othary has become simply outmatched at every turn. Many of the people are more than a little bitter, but more than that a good deal of the population have sought out a new life as an adventurer in the Elusive Isles through Treovell's Sharktooth Co. trading their farm for a blade.

Races and their Homelands

Aarakocra: The woodlands to the North East they live in harmony with the woods and often visit the mountains.
Aasimar: Could be from anywhere, there are no large enclaves or primarily Aasimar areas. They are typically treated with respect and often valued for their abilities.
Bugbear: Only large Bugbear society is in the Roughlands. Any others are no better than tribals.
Dragonborn: Similar to Aasimar they are rare and scattered through the land, and treated with respect.
Dwarf: Up in the North among the mountains is a large Dwarf Kingdom. Wherever your Dwarf is it's likely they can trace their roots to Goldheart.
Elf: Mostly in the Woodlands in the North East as forest dwellers, plenty of Elves have wandered farther afield.
Firbolg: The Firbolg live in the woodlands with the elves, tending to prefer to keep to themselves.
Genasi: Water: All across the coastline, many in the navies Fire: With the Dwarves in the holds to help forge, some in the desert, Air: Many in the desert and scattered about, Earth: The Roughlands with the Orcs and Hobgoblins.
Gnomes: Every nation has a few gnomes, although they fit in best in the desert as it encourages entrepreneurs and inventors. There is also a good population in the mountains and Treovell as both are doing well these days.
Goblin: The lesser race of the Roughlands the Goblins are usually bullied and taunted by the stronger races from those areas.
Goliath: The mountain dwellers aside from Dwarves, Goliaths rarely involve themselves with the troubles of the other nations.
Half-Elf: Half elves are everywhere but most common in Othary as it borders nations populated mostly by Elves and Humans.
Halfling: Halflings are found near enough everywhere, but they like the farming life in Othary.
Half-Orc: Most heavily in the Roughlands and Treovell as they are the centers for Orc and Human populations.
Hobgoblin: Almost all within the Roughlands as most other nations don't appreciate their rough, violent demeanor.
Human: Found in all nations humans are by far the most widespread and common race, but they are most common in the Kibaetis Dynasty, Treovell and Othary.
Kenku: Wanderers found in every nation but most often Treovell.
Kobold: Rare around the coast of the Sharktooth Sea Kobolds can be found anywhere but never in large numbers.
Lizardfolk: Similar to the Kobolds Lizardfolk are a rarity on the Sharktooth coast, but not unheard of. A few work with the Sharktooth Co. Navy due to their skill in the water.
Orc: The primary population of the Roughlands the Orcs are responsible for its very tough, unfriendly reputation.
Tabaxi: The largest Tabaxi population is in the Kibaetis dynasty as they deal well with the desert, but they are wanderers and can be found nearly anywhere.
Tiefling: Almost opposite to the Aasimar while Tiefling may be found anywhere they are almost always treated with disrespect and disdain.
Tortle: Tortles are an even rarer sight than Lizardfolk, but in the small towns they do occupy the two live together in harmony. They are most common around the edges of the coastline itself.
Triton: Always coastal dwellers the Triton's true home is at the base of the sea itself but many have begun to seek the well paying work in the Sharktooth Co. Navy.
Yuan-Ti: Dwellers of Kibaetis the Yuan-Ti love to play the mercantile and political games the nation encourages.

Rules

 • Content: This game will include graphic content, but not smut (In the main story threads.). It will be in Extreme but posts including heavy content will be tagged with a warning. Gory combat expected.
 • Smut: The game's main story threads will not feature it but encounters for characters can be worked out, including using player controlled NPC's. It's not the focus of the game but it'll exist as an option.
 • Writing: Third person past tense, 2-3 paragraphs, spell check, proofread. Post rate 2-3 days or faster, particularly during combat.
 • Respect: By friendly and polite to each other OOC. IC drama and arguments can happen, just don't spill it over.
 • Godmode: Don't, for any reason, take control of any other player or non player character. Don't assume their thoughts or actions.
 • GM Rulings: I will try to be as fair as possible but sometimes DnD calls for GM rulings on situations. These are always final. That said this isn't intended to be a competitive D&D experience, and I am trying to create a story, not 'play against the players'.

Character Creation

The information required to create a character in this setting can be found just in this post. While the Elusive Isles have an extensive worldbuilding thread that's not where the player characters are from. They are from the Sharktooth Coast. There are a few paragraphs on that region above, as well as a breakdown of where races are most likely from. If you have any questions on areas of the Sharktooth Coast I'm happy to help figure them out.

Stats will be a 27 point buy for all characters, and players will begin at level 1.

If you are interested in joining please fill out the form below and PM it to me. Feel free to state the kind of character you'd like to play in the recruitment thread and see if you can discuss with others. You can apply with similar characters but the chances are only one will get in. After we discuss your concept I am comfortable providing help completing CS's if it's needed. I'm only taking a maximum of one character from each class.

Once made characters will be taken through a brief 1x1 adventure in order to see who fits well, to get the characters used to the setting and to check how posting rates turn out.

Posting Rate: (Going to need to be pretty regular)
Expectations: (What are you looking for in this game with regards to combat, exploration, puzzles, social interaction, kingdom building?)
Questions or Feedback: (Any questions about how the game works, any feedback on the setting, anything you think is missing etc?)

Character Name:
Race:
Class:
Background

History
Just an idea of their life up to the point they got on the boat to come to the Elusive Isles. What got them here? How did they find life on the Sharktooth coast in a mercenary culture? What do they know about the Elusive Isles and what made them want to visit them? Why your character is the class they are. We will be figuring out how their journey went, what happened on arrival and why they have chosen to leave Heroes Landing all in character.

Personality and Attitude:

Who are they? What do they like, dislike, value and disrespect? What do they think about the Elusive Isles and what in their life has made them choose to come here, and what do they hope to gain here. At some point they're going to be involved in an effort to carve out their own corner of the world, why might that matter to them?

Acceptable Source Material

Homebrew is almost certainly not an option. If it's Unearthed Arcana it'll be case by case approval with discussion. Also if I've missed a book with any kind of usable source material from here, let me know. Please aim to create a cool and fun character, as this campaign is not about challenge or hardcore combat but just about a collaborative storytelling adventure. If you need basic help, let me know, but I can't provide all the information in any of the books below to you. The only book that is going to be necessary for players to have some access to is the Player's handbook, with the other books just affording a few alternative options.

Player's Handbook
Monster Manual
Dungeon Master's Guide
Rise of Tiamat

I’d like to come back with my chef.

Now she'll have a chance to set up a shop.

I can't even begin to list the ways I can see her getting herself kicked out of Heroes Landing. So that works easily.

Everything she did in the last iteration can be canon for her and we can pick up the 1x1 bit with whatever mishap actually gets her kicked out.

Character Name: Klem Clortho
Race: Triton
Class: Rogue
Background Charlatan

History
Thirty years ago, the tales began... Swapped between drunken dockmasters and drunken fishermen and drunken sea merchants, they told of a creature that came out when it was dark and the bottles of rum had almost run down to the bottom. It crept up from the depths, its walk insidious and unnatural as it passed from shadow to shadow.

At first they claimed it was the ghost of a young seaman who had died with love unrequited and ever after sought his lover who had last seen on the docks. Then they claimed it was a sea devil that warmed its chilly heart of ice with the blood of land dwellers.

None of these stories ever really caught traction, because of the fact all that the shape seemed to be interested in when it came ashore was spicy and sweet cured dates or dark rum or pickled herrings or candied nuts or... and so the fishermen named the skulking thing from the sea, “The Snatch-Pastry”! Decades removed from the days of pilfering the docks for treats from above, Klem still giggles when she hears the story whispered in hushed tones.

When she was in her twenties (still rather young for Tritons) she first introduced herself to the world above the waves as a pearl diver. She began to earn a living as a deep sea procurer for an upper end tavern whose claim to fame was exotic fare. In short order, she began to supplement her income by working in the kitchen.

As a girl she has dabbled briefly in spell craft, but her teacher beneath the waves marked her off as “too stupid” to be trained. Cookery seemed very much like magic to her, but magic she could understand. Her sensitive palate and keen senses lead her on an epic quest when she was above land that spanned from dishwasher to prep cook to sous chef and finally to head chef... when the real head chef took a day or two off.

At this point her story took a sad turn as it was discovered that a great many of the exotic game meats she was obtaining and serving... was purchased at the butchery shop a block away.

“It wasn’t her fault! She had a ten hour work day above land alone! Besides which, no one can tell the difference between a well seasoned sirloin and a dragon steak, if the sirloin has enough scotch bonnet infused butter! Besides, they ENJOYED the meal! Was it any less delicious now that it was just common suckling pig?” These excuses did NOT protect her from the wrath of embarrassed nobles who had been paying top dollar for “peasant fare”.

In order to make restitution and avoid debtors prison, she was only too eager to sign up for a journey that would pay back what she owed and get her out of town while tempers cooled. Besides which, it would be a grand adventure! If they wanted exotic culinary delights, the things she would bring back would blow their wigs off!

Personality and Attitude:

A thrill seeker to the core, she considers herself on the path to becoming one of the greatest chefs in the isles. Much of her demeanor is fabricated and indeed, she never seems to tell the same story about her past twice.

Those who have known her long enough, have learned she can not tolerate a bland life anymore than a bland filet of beef. She peppers in lies to taste, and has no gift for talking small. Following her disgrace in the public eye, she has set out to both reinvent herself, pay her debts and most importantly... continue her education upon the most exotic of culinary matters.

Her facade has the desperation of someone on the run from either crimes or responsibility. Those that know her would be hard pressed to say which...

I don't see any reason why it can't be canon. I'll summarise it somehow to remind those who were involved if more come back. They can just tell the new ones they meet what happened, if they want to.

I have PM'd everyone from before and said they're all welcome.

Definitely color me interested. I am rather tired at the moment so unless struck with sudden and intense inspiration I don't think I'll be getting up much potential character information up until tomorrow though...

No rush.

I should clarify I doubt any IC's going to happen until the New Year. Going to give it a while to see what CS's come in and not going to start anything at the holidays.

Definitely interested in giving this game a second try.  Going for at least a similar character for this if not just copy paste.  Too tired today to do more than renew my interest though.

Do note that all that's about the Isles, which isn't where the characters are from. So everything needed to make a character's in this thread.

Exactly. The scale and nature will depend on the group we get.

Will that aspect have mechanics like from Strongholds and Followers or be pure narrative?

Yes. I'll be working out attached mechanics, checking through everything available for ideas. But the group will be able to use it to acquire money and resources, and maybe send groups of soldiers/adventurers out on their own missions.

Depends on the kind of place built.

Edit: I don't have a copy of Strongholds and Followers just for the record. I may grab a hold of it but if I can't it'll just be my best efforts with some research online and discussion.

Guancyto

oshi Strongholds and Followers.

...is it wrong that suddenly I want to be a Paladin because in S&F there's a chance they get an Alicorn mount?

Mechanics like it. Not it.

So that wont apply here.

I'm definitely interested in this, and I'll send my app sometime later today. Would a gunslinger themed Wizard be acceptable? No actual guns, of course.
Ref I'd Use

Gunslinger themed how? But.. I think so? Depending on how it's done.

Nothing mechanically different, he'd just have the aesthetic of an old wild west style cowboy, and certain spells would be skinned to pertain guns, i.e. firebolt coming out of his revolver shaped arcane focus, or summoning an arcane winchester to fire out melf's acid arrow, before it dissolves away into magical essence again. If guns aren't a thing in this world, it could be something he discovered from divining other planes or something.

Unfortunately not only are guns not a thing but planes are a bit particular too. So there's not really any way to come across that aesthetic.

Well, that's a shame. I have a more appropriate wizard concept I can use, though, so I'll just apply with that.

Sorry about that. Sounds good, thanks for understanding.

Will most fighting happen in dungeon delving type situations?  I am looking at doing a cavalier.
If I have not responded to a post in 4 days, send me a PM as I may have missed it.

Well, one of the nice things about 5e's cavalier archetype is that, unlike the class in pathfinder, it really has zip to do with having a mount - it makes it harder to fall off a horse. past that, every ability the subclass gives is as effective on foot with a horse nowhere in sight  ;D
