yes i'm reminded of this http://kundor.org/pub/batman-alignment.jpg poster where they attribute all alignments to batman...

Batman is an alignment.

I have received permission from the GM to submit a character for this game, so I'm going to be doing that today.  It looks like most of you have pretty compelling character writeups, so I hope that I can live up to the standards set so far (I am, as mentioned before, simply awful at finding good character portraits.)  I'm thinking about putting a Psion together, as it's been very long indeed since I played a member of that class.

Incidentally, I note that at least one person is playing a Monk - would it do any good for us to petition the GM to give that class a bit of a boost?  It's a tremendously flavorful class, but slightly underpowered.  I've always found myself a bit disappointed when I played one, and I don't think it would hurt anything to house-rule it a bit.

*Does a double take*

Psions! Fuck yeah!

As for the suggestion about the monk class, i'd like to keep from using too many house rules to increase the effectiveness of any one class - as the relative power level of a class will be a little less relavent in such a very story driven campaign. Though if anyone has really good suggestions, please post them and perhaps we can find something worthwhile. :)

Nyx is the last scion of a decayed and degenerate noble line in a far land.  He has traveled here to escape the ill rumors that surround his ancestry, and perhaps some creditors.  He has a penchant for uncovering secrets, and an unusual insight into the human scene.  There is something unwholesome about him though...when circumstances cause him to shed his glasses, his eyes are distinctly unnatural, and hint at an unnatural skein in the tapestry of his being.

He is polite enough, though, and seeks to make a place for himself here as best he can.

Name: Feyua

Feyua is probably the most perverted sorceress one could happen to stumble across, renown for her leaving villages culturally changed, this woman has been both a blessing and a curse to many. Specializing in controlling minds and changing bodies, Feyua is motivated by leaving her mark on a place in a manner which serves whatever kink she happened to indulge at the time. Feyua has learned to extend such fates to those who subject others to cruelty, but delivering such fates is far from a desire to extend justice and more a self indulgent method to impose her perversions on  others without a conscious nagging her they didn't deserve it.

The idea of evil tyrants being granted a more sedated justice than the harm they imposed to "prove they are better" infuriates this woman no end. Honor Feyua believes is something only the honorable deserve, those who abuse innocents or kind people are to her .... test subjects .. nothing more but sometimes less, a lot less. Such living perversions are adored by those who the tyrants shamed or harmed, but doing so is deemed a tryany in its own regard by those of purer values. She is more likely to trust any who are primarily selfish, and will likely befriend others who find her "very liberal manner" of helping those under repressing rule appealing.

- Love the depilitory spell! Yay for being able to shave legs! The other spell choices seem thematic and useful too. Suggestion woulda been my, haha, suggestion (Hold Person woulda been more limiting since it's humanodis only, and we have a cleric who will have it as a L2 spell.)

If you'd like 'cruncy' suggestions - and apologies in andvance to anyone if I ever seem to be trying to overrunning -  I know I like advice but I don't wan to make anyone feel like I'm trying to dictate their char:

- A light crossbow would be a great weapon for her. It's one of the few weapons which doesn't use strength for attack or damage, and keeps a mage out of the front row, and since she doesn't have 'iterative attacks' yet the move action reload time is not much of a loss.

- Maybe a higher constitution. Since wizards and sorcerers have the lowest hit die (d4) and can't wear armor, low HP from Constitution can be a liability. I understand if you want to roleplay her that way...one thing I've done and suggested in the past, when people do low-Con mages for archetypical purposes (i.e. she's not a physical person) is to mention that my own interpretation fo the class hd is that a certain bout of bookishness vs environmally developed endurance is built into the classes: a typical wizard doesn't get a whole lot of exercise and develop his physical stamina (hence the d4) whereas a barbarian typically has to extremes (hence their d12), and Constitution is like the genetic component on top of that. Or something. I don't want to tell ya how to roleplay her, rather, when other people have told me in the past they wanted to roleplay that way but not take on the danger of a low-Con mage, that was my RP explanation/interpretation. Or if you felt out of points...you get +1 to one stat at 4th level, so assuming that was Charisma, she'd be 29 under point buy; since it'd have been 32 without that +1, I guessed that might've been what you were doing. Or maybe it's 36 point buy - Nyx's stats and Neria's "second" set of stats are both 36, and Neria's "first" set is higher. Plus I noticed you have BoEF skills and IIRC Constitution helps 'stamina' ;) (tho less important for girls than guys!)

- Non enchantment DC is 16 + spell level (the racial +1 is only for enchantment....I think all her DC-using spells known right now are enchantment anyway)

Thanks for the advice/char-support and indeed I've gathered something similar from googling and perusing forums. The threads are always people complaining monk's useless and you should always do a rogue (similar to monk in many ways but apparently Sneak Attack is considered much better than the unarmed damage or flurry) or a warrior-caste (fighter, ranger, paladin, barbarian), or doing 'monk' optimization which are actually almost all levels of psionic first, unarmed swordsake like Kunoichi suggested, etc. It reminds me of a hilariously titled ranger thread I ran across - "A Ranger's Guide to Not Being a Ranger."

One issue, I gather, is the relative lack of ability to obtain enhancement bonuses for unarmed the way everyone does for weapons ("+2 longsword" etc.) which combined with the monk's lower BAB may be way people seem to have the experience that the monk's damage output is very low. (At L20 a fighter, ranger, paladin or barbarian will b +5 BAB ahead and then probably another +5 from his main weapon, so what he has a 60% chance of hitting the monk has 10% chance!)

Savage Species had an item, 'necklace of natural attacks', which functioned analogously (i.e. turn a single natural weapon attack into "+1 flaming" or whatever for the same price as a +1 flaming weapon, 8,000 gp or so). I was in one campaign (not the DM or the monk PC) in which this same idea was independently invented-and-approved and the monk PC had a +X flaming item (the original idea was thematic; the char's race was fire genasi)

Since this campaign is starting with no magic weapons, I figured this wouldn't be an issue for awhile, but I suppose it makes sense to mention now (i.e. quasi-ask the DM that if we eventually get to a point where we have a lot of treasure and downtime, my character would probably try to seek out an item crafter to commission an item of this sort. (At the rate forum RPGs go, that quite frankly would be a long long ways off if ever, so I hadn't been thinking about it much). Despite all my crunchy musings in this thread, I'm not too hung up on battle prowess for this campaign, as per the DM's advice, and it's okay if he hates this idea, but I suppose it's better to implicilty-ask now than later. (I like to feel that I've played as well as I can given I chose to play a monk, but not upset if it turns out to be a weak class like people say.)

Another main issue, I've gathered from the forums, is a simple insight which I hadn't picked up on myself - the monk's two signature features are the flurry of blows, and the speed bonus, but since you can't move in the same round you full attack (i.e. flurry), there's bad synergy. My current plan, if this campaign reaches L9, is to take a Tome of Battle feat called Snap Kick (its prereqs can be met by some full BAB chars at L6 but by a monk not until L9). It allows the character, when making an attack action, to take a -2 penalty on all attacks for the round and deliver one extra unarmed attack (a slightly weaker one, adds 0.5x Str damage instead of the usual 1.0x), rather analogously to Rapid Shot or the TWF feats. This might be a bad trade-off when flurrying, but when delivering a single attack (i.e. a round where you charge or take a move action), it's potentially a good trade-off and helps make more use of that high speed and the tumble skill.

Thanks again Kunoichi for pointing to Tome of Battle; it had a few interesting monk feats (which there aren't that many of in SRD). Unarmed swordsage looked very interesting too, I may switch if I have the time to familiarize myself with the 'maneuvers' and 'stances' I'd be picking for the character to know; either way I'm sure I'll have fun.

Oh, one more idea which humorously ties together both of my replies (designing a sorceress and making a monk useful) - if Enlarge Person would be as thematic for Feyua as Reduce Person (currently on her list), Enlarge Person is a very handy buff spell for monks, and I gather from forums that people who play monks try to use it, so that's potentially good party synergy.  (For roleplaying, social, and sexual purposes, I would guess they are often similar in effect - enlarging one partner is like reducing the other.)

Kunoichi

To get a good 'Monk' feel with an Unarmed Swordsage, you'll want to focus on Shadow Hand, Setting Sun, and Diamond Mind.  Some combination of those three will get you all the abilities a Monk can get, but with more versatility and better offensive options. ^^ Get Weapon Finesse and Shadow Blade, (the second of which is from Tome of Battle,) and you'll be able to add Dexterity to both attack and damage rolls when in a Shadow Hand stance.

Plus, high Dexterity makes you very 'flexible'... ;)

ff

Ohhh, thanks. That's a lovely concept and very nice suggestion (esp. for an elf, i.e. a dexy race) and the three 'school' suggestions make the manuever list less intimidating - I love poring over these things actually, but I've been unsure if I'd have the time to.

Kunoichi

Yeah, Swordsages have access to basically the largest selection of maneuvers in the entire book. ^^; They're all pretty interesting, but I'm glad I was able to save you time in narrowing down your choices.

Decrepitdan

I have to heartily disgree with the assertion that monks are 'useless' in combat situations. Monks are one of the best classes in combat when played right. First, they are second only to the paladin in their resistance to enemy attacks that require saving throws. They have a heavier hit die than the rogue - which usually has them last longer in a fight. Statistically, with their higher number of attacks they will hit more - and will often do the same amount of damage as a rogue. Later - a monk's hands actually become magical in their ability to do damage, and can eventually do damage under subtypes, ie cold steel, adamantine and so on.

A rogues main usefulness is in their skill selection - they are very limited really in combat.

Also, Zen Archery or the melee equivalent would more than make up for the lack of base attack bonus - while allowing you to not have strength.

Kunoichi

Monks aren't 'useless' in combat situations, but they certainly aren't very powerful, either.  The Monk just isn't a well-designed class.  To quote elsewhere:

Quote*They need to have high scores in multiple abilities to be fully functional: Strength for attack and damage, Dexterity for defense since they can't wear armor, Wisdom for their class features, and Constitution so they don't die since they're frontliners. Wizards just need high Intelligence, and clerics/druids just need high Wisdom. Boosting one stat is easier than boosting multiple. Feats like Weapon Finesse help with this, but that requires using up feats.

*Their class features don't synergize well with each other. Flurry of Blows gives them additional attacks, and they get a speed bonus. They can't make a full attack after moving their speed, so one or the other of these will be largely pointless in combat. They get Evasion and various immunities so they don't need to make saves, but they already have great saves that mean such things wouldn't be a big threat anyway.

*Their good class features take too long to kick in and are too limited. Slow Fall is incredibly situational, Abundant Step is once per day and comes at level 12 when Wizards have been able to cast Dimension Door for the past 5 levels, Quivering Palm is once per week and has a low DC when Clerics have been able to cast Slay Living multiple times per day for the past 6 levels, and Perfect Self gives a bunch of bonuses (though the DR is useless since at level 20 everything will have magic weapons) way too late in the game for them to make much difference.

I'm sorry, but people have had years to work out the relative strengths and weaknesses of the different classes, and Monk is one of those classes with a lot more weaknesses than strengths.

WyzardWhately

I hadn't really intended to start a disagreement on this matter.  I think it may be advisable to move the discussion to a spinoff thread in another subforum rather than clutter up the recruitment/character discussion stuff with it.

Incidentally, I am bored and would love to talk character-stuff with people.   ;)

I've been throwing an idea around with Decrepitdan about playing sedcutress type character(s) summoned from a wand...for use in...well whatever really, seducing especially though!  If anyone would be interested in such a wand let me (and/or Decrepitdan) know!  It comes with a few...limitations?  If the whole thing is too far out I'll come up with something else of course!

Somehow I missed this message originally, and noticed it after your new reply - I think that's a brilliant concept.

Perhaps a tiefling - i.e. character faint amount of devil or demon blood, probably succcubus in your case? That would fit the seductress idea, as well as the potential for her having been summoned via magic (usually happens to Outsiders )

If you don't want the level adjustment +1 usually associated with the tiefling (the abilities are good for a rogue but not for some other classes), there's a 'lesser' LA +0 version from Wizards I can link you (or google 'savage progressions). There's also Feytouched race which would work similarly.

WyzardWhately

I actually just talked with Inflateress via IM.  I hope she doesn't mind me speaking for her very briefly.

The wand actually produces foolish "bimbo" women which the wand-wielder can control and use as he will.  They are intended to be disposable.  A reading of Inflateress's O&O list will make it clear why that should be so.  She won't be playing the same magically-conjured seductress across the life of the game.

Addendum: I assume she cleared this with the GM.

Last I heard she had, but I will make it known that at first I liked the idea.  Then I realized that her 'idea' was a means to pop in and out of the RP at will instead of actually committing to it like the rest of us.  Sorry, but I don't think I'm going to be using the wand because I don't think that you'll be around to post when I actually put it into use, and if that happens I don't want to be held up and I am sure no one else wants to either.  I'd feel better if you made an actual character and be active instead of doing your wand idea, but until I see proof that you will stick around for the long haul or can prove you can, I won't be using the wand at all and will therefore not include it in my character in any shape or form.  You'll have to find another person to do it.

Well if you won't use the wand then how can I prove anything to you silly!? If you are not interested anymore  I totally understand but just tell me that.  You can also go to my profile and check my posts in games I am in, my record in this matter will be obvious to you then.  You should check every other player's too if you are concerened, or perhaps only I have a reputation of bailing out on games!

Sorry Inflatetress, I guess I'm still in a bit of a foul mood from my brother being an ass earlier today.  Still, you're right and I do apologize for being a jerk.  I didn't know you could check people's posting records on here.  Crap, thanks for telling me.  Also, I'll still use it but I would like it though at least, and I think it would help anyway if we had another actual character from you my friend.  Besides, variety is the spice of life lol.

IMO it's actually a clever mechanism for a player who wants to participate in a DnD game but not play the usual kind of DnD PC (i.e. combat oriented)...like an add'l DM who provides social NPCs. Should be interesting.

Taken comments on board.

a) Firstly I realise with low con I have to be smart about living - so I changed my 1st level spells to those below.

b) I wasnt sure if we have someone who can open locked chests and doors so Im changed my 2nd level spells

c) I built with a 32 point buy. I would adore it if was larger, I agree - if it stays at 32 flat I think she is fine as she is

d) Xbow ? I dont think a sorcerer can use one, even if she did she wouldn't hit anyone with it.

e) How was hitpoints chosen ? max first level then 3/4 or 1/2 thereafter ?

f) And um.. can i have a willo-wisp as my familiar ? (is cool and doesn't really have the means to dominate scenes - has to stay in the background - im happy for it to have less abilities than an adult wisp).

Other than these im all good to go - gets get started :)

Hunter

d) Crossbow is a simple weapon.  Sorcerers are proficient in all simple weapons.
