Catalyst is a small, freeform superhero game set in an original universe named Providence with superhero and sci-fi elements. The characters of this game will be the members of a newly-formed team of rogue superheroes called 'Catalyst' who are refusing to play by the rules, looking to combat villains in their own way and show up the heroes while they do it. They will be up against the system, authoritative heroes and downright nightmarish villains and still trying to keep their secret identities intact throughout.

The game will focus on challenging the characters and expecting them to struggle and work to overcome obstacles in their path. There will be plenty of triumphs but they will come at a cost. Bond-building between the player characters will be vital for this game, with all of the player characters being expected to end up tightly knit. This will not be a game where you can simply hit your problems harder to solve them, sharp wits and good choices will be vital along with being willing to lose a little blood.

This game will feature a wide range of triggering topics. While content warnings will be used this game is likely not for the softer-natured.



Premise
I know how you feel.

Every day you live in Raven Bay you see how things need to change. Right down in your gut you know it. Everyone does. Nobody really talks about how bad things have got. Perhaps we all just got used to it. We all sit here, watching the heroes play their game. Truth is, they're losing the game. Nobody wants to say it but I know it, you know it. Maybe this year they'll turn it around. We've all been hoping that for too long now.

They're standing tall in shining armour and those pristine, flowing capes and the truth is they don't want to get enough dirt on them to make a real difference. Every time a scrap turns nasty the villains stick the knife in first. Another hero in the dirt. More civilians biting the dust. Collateral damage. It's sick. Every day people suffer the worst.

I know. I know. You didn't ask for the power to make a difference. It's a heavy burden. You've got it, though. Raw potential. No hiding from that. Together we can do it. We can make things better here. Not heroes. This city's no place for heroes. Just people fighting to make things right whatever way we can. A catalyst for real change.

That's what we're called. Catalyst. We're new. We're going to do things different. Capture villains. Show up the heroes. Smack the corrupt back in line. Really make some noise. Don't back down from this shot. We can still save Raven Bay, you know that, right?



Setting
In the world of Providence superpowers first appeared in the late 1980's with the appearance of the mysterious, manufactured object known as The Samaritan in earth's orbit. Waves of strange headaches in a small percentage of the population, mostly localised in cities, marked those people as capable of developing superpowers when experiencing a moment of extreme stress and conflict particularly when helpless. The people who undergo this change develop a new part of their brain known as the Alius Datum, and they are known as Homo Alius or Alihumans.

The moment when an Alihuman gains their powers is known as 'Snapping'. So far, nobody has been able to form consistent parameters for what causes a snap and efforts to induce them have failed. Alihuman powers are wildly varied in their nature but they always have some kind of application in combat or at least conflict.

Alihumans who use their powers are collectively known as Masks and they all maintain their secret identities with great care. Masks can be heroes, villains or rogues. Almost all Alihumans maintain a double life with very few, if any, people they know being aware of their powers or their masked life. Unmasking another is one of the highest sins in masked society

Masks have formed a set of unwritten rules known as The Pact. The Pact exists after the dark days of Mask conflict in the 1990's when there were fewer considerations to secret identities. Masks killed each other, caused massive collateral damage to civilians and anyone unmasked was quick to lose family and friends. Now they do not unmask, and aim to be nonlethal, turning the conflict into something of a game with rules that quickly turns brutal when the pact is abandoned.





Raven Bay

Raven Bay is a city of around 500,000 people located on the East coast of the United States of America, around fifty miles north of Boston and in the state of Massachusetts. The city earned its name due to its large bay and extremely high raven population in the surrounding woodlands. Raven Bay is a dreary city, and a struggling one. It is plagued by a long history of misfortune and matters have not been improving in recent years. The populace is a downtrodden one, mostly numb to their own struggles and suffering. Raven Bay has extremely high unemployment, poverty, homelessness and crime rates.

While Raven Bay has a notably high Alihuman population, likely due to its economic and social struggles, it has a very under-funded branch of Vanguard who are maintaining a tenuous at best grip on the city's law and order. Even in terms of more mundane criminality Raven Bay still absolutely struggles. The civilian populace are used to being in danger both from villains and every day thugs.

The people of Raven Bay are often particularly bitter to the wider organisation of Vanguard even if they support the local Sentinels for doing what they can. Local cities like Boston and New York are often talked about to be approached for aid but the funding just isn't there to make it happen. The fact Vanguard hasn't allocated more resources is a source of rage for many both civilians and masks. It is lucky that the villains of Raven Bay are extremely disjointed and in permanent conflict with one another as without that the city would likely already have fallen under their complete control.




Rules

I: The GM's word is final. I will be reasonable and open to discussion but someone has to have final say.
II: Treat all other writers in this game with respect. Don't speak ill behind people's backs or attempt to be shady. If you have an issue with another writer, inform me.
III: All content must be given appropriate warnings for graphic or upsetting topics. This game will include upsetting themes but they should not be sprung on people.
IV: Do not godmode (I.E. Assuming/dictating another character's thoughts or actions.)
V: All posts in this game must be third person, past tense, with a reasonable standard of grammar & spelling.



F.A.Q

How many players are you looking for? Ideally at least four, no more than six. If there are less than six I will likely write a player character myself. I will be selecting characters and writers based on the best fit for the game.

How will recruitment work? I will leave this thread open until Sunday 4th of February, potentially extended if there are still character submissions being worked on. In that time, anyone interested can submit a character. This game will not be first come, first served. I will be approving characters case by case. As this is a small, focused game if I get more than six submissions I will not be able to take everyone.

Will I be able to write multiple characters? Unfortunately not, no. This is intended to be a small, focused game with a lot of time, effort and thought put into single characters and their journey and connections, not a broader sandbox environment.

What will the posting rate be? In guided scenes GM posts will be made every four days. If you need to be occasionally skipped this is okay but I am looking for players who can consistently post at least once every 4 days or around twice a week.

What will the game's structure be? The game will begin with the player characters recruitment. Ideally two at a time, the PC's will be brought into Catalyst by NPC's before being introduced, set up as a team and then performing a variety of missions. This will also serve as an activity check. There will be space for player-driven missions where they set their own goals and work towards them in the world, as well as fulfilling their part in Catalyst.

What will Catalyst actually do? Go on missions, fight and capture villains, steal from evil corporations, mess with the worse, more authoritarian heroes. They will gain more agency over time and the players will have chances to guide Catalyst later in the story.

Will there be sandbox threads? Yes. The main focus of the game will be GM-Guided stories but there will also be more open sandbox threads for socialisation, downtime and side-arcs.

How smutty will this game be? Not particularly. It will be an option. I will try to make options available for PC's with NPC's but I cannot promise that, and I cannot promise that any other PC's will be interest in romance with your PC. It's not the focus of the game.

What disturbing content will be featured? Your characters will absolutely witness an array of graphic violence, threatening behaviour, disturbing uses of superpowers, systemic corruption and abuse, drug and alcohol use and abuse and more. There will almost certainly at least be mention of sexual violence and it may be witnessed. While it may be witnessed there is absolutely no need for any PC to ever be the victim of sexual violence. It could happen, if a writer wants to explore that, but it is not going to be pushed on anybody. Physical violence and injuries, however, are a guarantee as is suffering psychological distress.

Will there be a Discord for this game? Yes, and as it is a small game joining will be mandatory. I do not want any writers to feel left out which, unfortunately, they will if they do not join the Discord.

What happens if I leave the game? Your character will be written as an NPC. You must accept this rule if you join this game. What happens then will depend in the story. I will likely recruit for a replacement writer.

Are faceclaims necessary? Yes, they need to be real faceclaims for this game. Please use reasonably high resolution images. No AI. Faceclaims must be reasonably public figures.

When will the game take place? This game will begin in February 2024 in-game date/year.

Do I need to read all that worldbuilding? No, you don't, but I do recommend you give the thread a read through once to familiarise yourself with the world. It's going to make character creation a lot more fluid, give you a better idea of the city your character lives in and help them feel like part of the world.

Before creating a character please read through the setting information and this segment for some ideas and guidelines. These guidelines may be prone to the occasional exception but overall they are here to try to help make it as easy as possible to make a suitable character. If you have a question about any of these feel free to ask it or else if you want to pitch an idea that bends the guidelines please feel free to ask. The linked world information thread will help answer a lot of questions and let you flesh out your character as a part of this world and a citizen of Raven Bay.


Guidelines:
Fitting Concepts: I am looking for rookie heroes, early 20's at the oldest. Minimal experience, lots of room for growth. If they have fought, it should only be against human criminals. Please make them fallible and flawed. Please keep characters reasonably moral, as they need to all be united in their heroics. Characters need to be motivated and driven to be heroes. They need to care.
Individuals: This is a small group. There is no room for toes to be stepped on. Everyone needs to be unique in terms of personality and powers. Please try to be creative and build a unique individual for this game.
Powers: All characters can only have one power. It may have multiple applications which can be fleshed out. Please consider a power that is useful in and out of combat with creative and tactical potential. Make mention of some weaknesses and limits of the power. Try to avoid numbers.
Depth: I am a fan of details. Please look at the history segment and read the points I suggest. Elaborate on their becoming an alihuman, their snap and how they decided they want to become a Mask. Include the reasons they might want to join Catalyst in particular.
Coding: Please keep the coding of the CS as-is in terms of size, font, bolding. Please feel free to change the colour of the text/glow in the glowing portions to something appropriate to the character.

Real, no AI it's a little too uncanny valley. Reasonably public figures but don't have to be A-List celebrities.

I love the vibe of the setting, while reminiscent of Masks the RPG in some wonderful ways in the team building and interactions, a much darker grittier version of it.

There's a little inspiration from Masks in the terminology, and in the focus on secret identities and team building stuff. But yes, a lot darker.

Thank you! I spent most of January writing & re-writing notes and rambling about the concept to various people and doing research. It's been a project for sure.

Yes, I am only taking 4-6 writers but I won't be making decisions until 4th February (Later if there are a few still working on CS's at that date. There are more than 6 people interested so not everyone can join but I will consider all options sent before the 4th.



Regarding powers the only things I can confirm I have been sent:
-> Shadow monster creation
-> Bubble Generation
-> Reality 'adjusting' (Complex. Low-level reality 'pushing'.
-> Now mention of teleportation

I have a feeling this game will be female-heavy so those willing to write characters who are not cis female will have a better chance. (Not just males but any nonbinary/genderqueer characters).

Also have had a fair bit of mention of sexual assault as a trigger for snapping. While I have no issue with this, it's a common choice so far so anything other than that is likely to be more unique.

Edit: Expanding more on powers I have added this to the CS to hopefully give some additional information,

"(Characters in this game must have powers tied to the way they snapped. They may only have one power but it may have multiple uses/applications. E.g. turning into a steel man is one power but it would make you both stronger and tougher. Powers must be tied to their snap but only loosely. Being shot doesn't necessarily mean you get gun powers. The real trauma would be the shock, so perhaps you would gain foresight to prevent being ambushed like that again. I will give a good deal of leeway regarding the connection, if it makes sense to you it's probably fine.)"
