I love the gladiator idea - can see it getting into some pretty dark themes which I've very much been in the mood for.

I'd envision MC as a condemned man, pressed into slavery for his crimes and every bit deserving of the fate, which drives home the paradox of why his life would be the one she chooses to spare. I can see her being forced to confront some uncomfortable things about who she is, trying to convince herself her feelings stem from a noble regard for human life, and not a more primal attraction.
