The time is the end of the 19th century.  Top hats and corsets are in fashion and the Industrial Revolution is in full swing.  The place is Millersborough, a rural village in eastern England.

Life in this bucolic town is peaceful and uneventful.  That is, until the rumors of something dark and deadly begins to spread.  Vampires!  No one knows from whence these unholy creatures came, but they are preying on the citizens of  Millersborough, and it is up to YOU to stop them.

This game will follow the typical Mafia game rules: each round, during the Day Phase, the village will come together to vote on who they think the Vampire is.  The unlucky victim will then have a wooden stake driven through his heart and his head will be chopped off, as that is the only known method to kill a vampire (unfortunately, it tends to work rather well on regular people, too).   Then, during the Night Phase, the vampires will have a chance to prey on one of the villagers, while certain roles will have the option to perform actions under the cover of darkness.

The following roles will be used:

Commoner (Good) -- a brave and loyal citizen of Millersborough.  No special powers, but has the ability to vote to lynch suspected vampires.
Vampire Hunter (Good) -- has spent his whole life researching and hunting vampires, to the point where he can recognize the telltale signs (you'd think the elongated fangs would be a clue!).  Each round , during the night phase, can target one other player.  Will be told by the GM if that player is a vampire or not.  His ability is wasted during that night if his target is protected by the Constable.
Zealot (Good) -- hates vampires.  REALLY hates vampires, so much so that he is willing to act as judge, jury, and executioner, no matter the consequences.  Once per game, he has the ability to eliminate one other player during the night phase.  His ability is wasted if his intended target is protected by the Constable.
Constable (Good) -- the Constable has the ability to, if he wishes (in other words, he may elect not to use this ability), protect one other villager during the night phase from vampire attack and all other special abilities.  However, that villager will be role-blocked and unable to use her own night phase ability, if she has one.  The Constable may not protect himself.

Mad Scientist (Neutral) -- The Mad Scientist doesn't care about vampires or villagers.  The Mad Scientist only cares about one thing: SCIENCE!  Her only goal in the game is to get herself lynched.  She wins if she does this.  In addition, if she is lynched, her unnatural creation will come to life and rampage throughout the village, taking its vengeance on one of the hapless villagers who voted for her during the next night phase.  If she is killed by any other means--vampire attack or the Zealot's knife--she loses.
Dracula (Evil) -- the original vampire.  Dracula has the ability to, once per game, turn one of the other villagers into a vampire during the night phase.  The turned villager loses whatever special powers they previously had, and now joins the vampire team.  Dracula cannot turn a villager on the same turn as the vampires kill a villager (if a villager is killed, no one can be turned).
Consort of Dracula (Evil) -- joining Dracula in his wickedness, the Consort will help him choose who to eliminate during the night phase.  Shows up as a vampire to the Vampire Hunter.
Minion (Evil) -- the Minion thinks that vampires are COOL!  So much so, that he will do anything he can to help the vampires win.  The only problem is that he doesn't know who they are, and they don't know who he is.  Perhaps he can find out by clever and judicious use of PMs? He wins if the vampires win, even if he is dead.  He loses if the vampires are all killed, even if he is still alive.  Will show up as a regular villager if examined by the Vampire Hunter.

Game Rules:

1. PMing is allowed and even encouraged between players.  Please include me, Remiel, on any PM correspondence.
2. You may talk about the game outside of E (on Discord, for example), but please be careful.  You don't want to inadvertently give away vital information to your enemy.
3. Please don't take anything about the game personally.  No one likes being eliminated, but it is part and parcel of the game.  Even if you are dead, you can still win if your team wins!
4. The GM (Remiel) reserves the right to make rule adjustments as necessary if the game is starting to drag on.  For example, if no one wants to make an accusation during the day phase, the GM might introduce a rule saying that the first person to make an accusation is immune from lynching.  Or if the game is hung up waiting on one particular person, the GM may decide to proceed without that person's vote.
5. Game rounds shall typically last about 72 hours (3 days) in real time.  If the rounds start to take much longer than this, see rule #4.
6. You cannot vote to lynch yourself.

FAQ

Q: Once I have voted, can I change my vote?

A: Yes, you can!  Once everybody has voted, the GM will make a post saying voting has closed.  Until that time, you can change your vote.  Make sure to put your vote in bold, so it is clear whom you are voting for.

Q: If the Vampire Hunter looks at a target on the same night as that target is turned by Dracula, what does the Vampire Hunter see?

A: The target will show up as "not a vampire."  It will take some time for the curse to take effect!  However, if the Vampire Hunter looks at that same target on a subsequent night, they will see a Vampire.

Q: If Dracula is role-blocked by the Constable, but other Vampires are still alive, do the vampires still get to kill at night?

A: Yes.

Q.  How does the Constable's ability work?

A. The Constable can protect, but also role-block, one other target at night.  That target will be told they were protected, even if they have no special abilities.

Q.  If the Constable successfully protects someone from harm, will either the Constable or the intended target be notified that they were attacked?

A: No.

Q: Can the Constable protect the same target two or more nights in a row?

A: Yes.

Q: If a turned Villager is lynched, will we be told that that Villager is a Vampire?

A: Yes.  If a villager is turned, they lose whatever role they formerly had and are now considered a Vampire.

Q: If the Mad Scientist is lynched, can the Constable protect the victim of the Mad Scientist's revenge?

A: No.  The Mad Scientist's revenge is the only unblockable attack in the game.

Q: If the Minion is killed, would they be revealed as the Minion?

A: Yes.

Q:  When someone is killed or voted out, is their role revealed?

A:  Yes.

All right!  That's a quorum.  I'll leave this up a few days in case we get any latecomers (and because I'll be out of town!) but then we'll go ahead.

I am particularly interested in seeing how the addition of the Mad Scientist is going to play out.

And the game has officially started!  First order of business: to elect a Mayor, who will have the tie-breaking vote (like the Sheriff in the last game).

As always, please include me (Remiel) on any game-related PMs.  Good luck!

Blythe

Remiel

Small rules correction:  Because I just realized that the Mayor has the potential to save the game for the Villagers, the win condition for the Vampires is now

The vampires win if:  At any point, the vampires outnumber the other villagers.

In some of your messages I had written "at any point, the vampires outnumber or equal the other villagers."

Please disregard the "or equal".  Thanks!

Lynnie

I am excited to play this!!! Though I made a huge mistake and tried to go back to the gym after five years to my old workout routine....mistakes were made. Instant regret!

Oh noooo Lynnie! *offers hugs*

I'm excited to be a player, and Remiel is better than I am at rules so it'll be cool to knock the rust off. Thanks for running this, Rem!

Imogen should just ask her questions here in the OOC thread to save Remiel from having to post them. ;)

(Kidding.)

So if the target is told they're protected, but they're not told that they were attacked, is it just "hey you were protected by the Constable tonight"? So the target knows that the Constable was there whether or not they were attacked?

Ket, I'm not upset at all! I'm actually not surprised to be the first one staked though! I have been killed off first more times than I can remember. So yeah ^^ No hard feelings at all.

Remiel

So something I'm going to do different this game is give the people who are voted out one last chance to accuse somebody, declare their innocence, explain any last-minute theories, etc.

If you do not use that opportunity in about 24 hours, I will proceed with the game.

Remember, if you are killed, you can still hang out with us in the OOC, but you cannot talk strategy. :\

Actually, let's make that about 12 hours, to avoid stalling the game longer than it needs to be.

Remiel

Q:  When someone is killed or voted out, is their role revealed?

A:  Yes.

Remiel

Hey guys, I completely neglected to put it in the rules this time, but just as a reminder, for this and future Mafia games, you are not allowed to use Elliquiy's quote function, either in the game thread or a game-related PM.  You can paraphrase what someone had said in your own words, but you're not allowed to quote them directly.

For example, saying

"I know that Persephone is a vampire.  Last night she told me
Quote from: Persephone on January 19, 2018, 09:42:45 AM
I am a vampire.
"

is NOT okay, but saying

"I know that Persephone is a vampire.  Last night she told me she was a vampire."

IS okay.

It's a fine distinction, but using the quote function (as well as the Who's Online tool, or any other technical tools of the forum) provides an unfair advantage.  Basically, treat the game as if all the players were sitting in the same room at the same time.

I apologize for not putting this in the rules this time around.

Remiel

To all Millersborough players:  the game is currently on pause while I try to figure out what to do about SithLord's suspension.  Please stand by.

Okay, guys.  After thinking about things all day, I decided that the fairest thing to do for both sides is to drop Sith from the game, reveal his role, and move on with the day vote.   If anybody has an objection to this, please let me know!

Mintprincess

Thank you Remiel for taking the time with this.  Let's all still have fun everyone! <3

Mintprincess

Remiel

Well, because of SithLord's suspension and other...events, I think that a bit more time is necessary.  Let's go with 4:00pm, Monday, EST.

Which means that, at the time of this posting, you all have...*checks watch*  about 28 1/2 hours to get those votes in!

Trieste

This game has been harder than many of the ones I’ve played. I’m enjoying the challenge.

Ok. Now that is over I have to share the most funny of moments.

Rummy tum tum told me he was the constible.  (Sorry babe didn’t believe you).  So I asked him who he protected last night knowing full well that the constible protected me. (thanks Ket!)

I figured he had a good chance of guessing wrong.

But instead.

He ‘protected’ a dead body.  Nightowl.

And I have to know— did you fuck that up on purpose?? !!  Lol

Thanks for playing, everybody!  I hope you all had fun, even though it got a bit intense there for a while.

Breakdown of roles:
Yugi006 -- Dracula
Madame Professor -- Zealot
Mintprincess -- Citizen
Imogen -- Citizen
Blythe -- Vampire Hunter
Rummy Tum Tum -- Mad Scientist
Lynnie -- Citizen
NightOwl35 -- Consort of Dracula
SithLordofSnark -- Citizen
Scott -- Citizen
Ket -- Constable
Trieste -- Minion

Day One
- The election for Mayor begins.  Madame Professor, the Zealot, and Ket, the Constable, are the favorites.  Ket wins by one vote and is elected Mayor.

Night One
- Blythe, the Vampire Hunter, examines Madame Professor, and sees that she is not a vampire (or at least wasn't at the start of the night).
- Yugi, Dracula, tries to turn Imogen, a Citizen.  Unfortunately for him, Ket, the Constable, chooses to protect Imogen for the night.  Thus, Yugi's ability is wasted.
- MP decides not to use her ability.

Day Two
- Rummy tries a little bit too hard to appear suspicious, and several players immediately suspect him of being the Mad Scientist.   Unfortunately, he is never quite able to shake this suspicion.
- Blythe enters Beast Mode, contacting half the players in the game.  He reveals his role to Madame Professor, Rummy, and Imogen.
- Blythe tries to force a multi-way tie, thus forcing Ket to choose the lynch victim for the day, but his plan is undone when Imogen begins to suspect him of being a vampire.  Alliances are formed; Blythe and MP form an alliance, and Mintprincess and Imogen agree to a non-aggression pact.  Imogen calls Blythe out as the Vampire Hunter in public, forcing Blythe to reveal his role to everyone.
- Yugi and NightOwl sit and watch from the shadows as the village turns on itself, nominating Imogen (a Citizen) and Lynnie (a Citizen) for execution.  Ket decides to execute Lynnie.

Night Two
- Seeing that Lynnie was innocent, Madame Professor, the Zealot, uses her ability to eliminate Imogen.
- The vampires decide to kill Scott, a Citizen.
- Ket, the Constable, protects Trieste.
- Blythe scries Imogen and discovers she is not a vampire.

Day Three
- Mintprincess suspects Yugi of being the Zealot.  Yugi plays along.
- NightOwl correctly deduces everybody's roles.   Shi makes cursory contact with Trieste, the Minion, but neglects to inform Trieste of the identity of the other vampire.
- There is speculation in multiple corners that Blythe did, indeed, start out as the Vampire Hunter but may have been turned.
- SithLordofSnark proves that he is a Citizen to Mintprincess by directly quoting the PM in which I give him his role assignment.    This breaks the game because now Mintprincess knows, through process of deduction, that NightOwl cannot be a Citizen and is thus lying to her.   In all honesty, I bear much of the blame for this, as I saw it coming and did nothing to stop it.  Ironically, however, the crisis is solved by Sith's suspension.  After conferring with NightOwl, Yugi, and Mint, it is mutually agreed that the best and fairest course of action is to drop Sith from the game and reveal his role.
- Mintprincess believes Yugi to be the Zealot until Madame Professor admits to the role in public and votes for NightOwl.  Mintprincess realizes that Yugi is lying.
- Perhaps even more damning, Yugi tries to defend NightOwl during the voting, thus drawing suspicion upon himself when NightOwl is revealed to be a vampire.
- NightOwl is lynched and revealed to be the Consort of Dracula.

Night Three
- Blythe investigates Yugi and discovers that, yup, he's a vampire all right.  Unfortunately, he does not survive to tell anyone about this revelation, as Yugi eliminates Blythe.
- Ket protects Mintprincess.

Day Four
- The village unanimously lynches Yugi.  Villagers win.

Also to be fair, Nightowl and I also entered into a Mint vs Night go all out and go crazy. Hense my ramp up of Passion and frustration!  Sorry if I went overboard. These games get me sometimes.   But you all were so super fun.

Trieste gave me a heart attack when she switched her vote.  I was like. WTF?!?!?  Lol!!

Remiel

Also, I have to note this:

What was absolutely fascinating about this game was that, from an outsider's perspective, both Blythe's and Imogen's strategies were logically sound.   On Day Two, besides the fact that Ket had been elected mayor, you all had literally zero information, other than the knowledge that no one had died during the night.  Which could have meant that either someone had been protected (as was the case), or, much more likely, someone had been turned.

Blythe's strategy--to force a tie, and thus force Ket to pick an unlucky victim--would have, at the very least, told you something about Ket.  Which may or may not have been especially useful, but it would have been something.   It also would have minimized the risk from accidentally voting out the Mad Scientist.

And Imogen's strategy--to lynch Ket, since, as Mayor, she would have been the most likely target to have been turned during the night--was equally valid.  Had I been in the game, I probably would have voted (incorrectly, as it turns out!) for Ket on Day Two as well, because I always play the odds.

To me, this is fascinating, because, as the difference of opinion between Imogen and Blythe--both intelligent, rational individuals and extremely strategic players--blossomed into disagreement, then suspicion, and finally outright paranoia, the vampires didn't have to do a damn thing to turn the village against itself.  Indeed, they sat quietly in the shadows as accusations were tossed back and forth.

!!  Lol

Yes. But, you meddling villagers just had to work together and find the vampires instead of calling me out on my bullshit and killing me >.>

. Hahaha so that was on purpose.  Just confirmed for me Ket was my go to!

Rummy Tum Tum

I said plenty of bullshit on purpose, like how Imogen thought you were the second suspicious person when in fact it was Mad. That didn't work out either. I might've made a good vampire, come to think of it.

Blythe

I was so confused about you Blythe! I thought maybe you were turned.  But also maybe you were the MS with how crazy you started acting.

yugi006

The fact that me and Night failed to turn somone night 1 made it hard for us. What made it even harder was the fact that all the citizens were being eliminated with all the special roles in play so we couldn't just claim the citizen role.

Ket

I was convinced Trieste was a vampire! Close enough, I guess. #TeamPlanetPluto

And OMG you guys, every time someone said "The constable can protect the mayor," I was screaming at my laptop "NO I FRIKKEN CAN'T!"

Day Three
- NightOwl correctly deduces everybody's roles.   Shi makes cursory contact with Trieste, the Minion, but neglects to inform Trieste of the identity of the other vampire.

Figured I'd add to something here. I also made contact with Rummy. I called both of them out on their role with a plan on how to win but as soon as MP and Blythe put votes on my head it was all over. I didn't give either of them information as I wasn't 100% sold that they were what I thought they were.

I will say though, and I'm not sure if this was on purpose but, Trieste had a unique way of me figuring out she was the Minion. It was this post here:

I mean, I spent all night in the library reading Bram Stoker for clues and other than a dreamy accent, I'm not sure how we'd even recognize anyone.

Ah well...almost...Just needed Blythe and MP to NOT realize what was going on and stake Ket instead of me and we could have had it!

Mintprincess

YOU weren’t the only one to catch that though.   I thought it was strange but imogen called Trieste out early in a PM to me.   And while I did contact her i did operate under the assumption she was likely not good.

Her support of Ket did make Ket look a little shady at first.

Yet she still counted as a villager which only helped you guys.

Blythe

I feel so fortunate that I scryed MP that first night, to be honest.  I think that was arguably the best move I did in the whole game, because it let me trust her and allowed her to pull through with an excellent strategy against NightOwl.

Though next time I'm going to try a far more relaxed strategy. My biggest mistake in this game was going too big too fast; I could have afforded to wait a round or two before revealing myself to anyone I didn't scry.

yugi006

That could have backfired if we turned MP instead of going after Imogen the first night.

Blythe

yugi006

Even if that happened you would eventually figure it out when she didn't use her powers.

Madame Professor

Well, and I was a little wary at first, too.

Typically in these games, I’m super paranoid about what anyone says to me privately. After careful consideration, I decided that I would take him at his word. I did not, however, reveal my role to him. I thought that, if he turns out to be lying to me, I’ll just kill him. But as we talked and bounced ideas, it became clear to me I could trust him. Which turned out to be good.

Also, I’m sorry Imogen. :(
Between vacation and sickness, I was convinced you or Lynnie was #teambadguy and one was manipulating the other...  :-[

Never a problem, MP! This game would get old fast if we were right all the time! And you guys got the wolves/vampires! ;-)

Madame Professor

So true.

It was a bit demoralizing to watch so my citizens fall so quickly in the beginning.

I do think Yugi brings up a good point: the role reveal I feel did lean in the Village’s favor. Having people confirmed specific roles I feel gives the baddies a disadvantage. I think revealing the player’s team rather than their role would balance things more fairly.

Also, I didn’t realize this until like Day 3-4, I was thinking it was similar to the Bodyguard which CAN. And so I was like, oooooo, she HAS to be the Constable!

Hrmmm.  You might be on to something here.  It's true that what primarily led to NightOwl's, and hence Yugi's, downfall is that the Village ran out of Citizens/Commoners.  I'll have to think about this...

look back at how Guy ran the game summer of 16.  That’s how he did it.

Remiel

Well, usually the Villagers are the ones groping about in the dark, while the Werewoofs / Bad Guys know everything and are just trying not to get caught.  Thus, I usually like giving the Villagers information in terms of who has been eliminated so they can use deduction to help them.

Introducing the Minion and the Mad Scientist/Necromancer, however (which, in my opinion, made the game better and more interesting, even if our particular Minion and Mad Scientist were not so successful!) puts the Werewoofs / Bad Guys a little bit in the dark as well, so maybe hiding the role reveals isn't such a bad thing in terms of balance.

Thoughts?

Madame Professor

I understand the thought process, since the village starts with no info. I think having a GM confirmed role takes the deception out of the deception game. It’s part of the village’s job to seek out that info and the baddies to convince the village they are on their side.

Just my thoughts.

It was still fun and really chaotic! <3

Part of it is we just got really unluckly and took out most of the citizens but since the roles are revealed upon death once most of the citizens were killed it is nearly impossible to come back and win. Also the fact that we failed to turn someone contributed to that too but I think not revealing the roles are better with such a small group. If it was a large group obviously there would be more citizen roles making it okay to reveal the roles.
