A scent of camellia blows across the riverfront as the village of Pai Sun prepares for the first evening of its Paper Boat Festival. The first wave of hand-folded crafts have been spotted across the water, bearing gifts from Pai Sun's sister village upstream. In the boughs of a gnarled oriental cypress, a masked woman waits for nightfall.

I'm looking for players for a freeform wuxia fantasy adventure, which will be a mix of romantic settings, campy action, and scantily-clad, smutty fun. I have a 4 act structure planned which first explores the setting of a troubled village, second indulges in some over the top kung fu fighting, third raises the stakes with intrigue, and fourth concludes the story with a climactic showdown. But, if there are motivated players willing to pilot their own stories, I would also be interested in opening the game to a sandbox format.

What is wuxia?
Think kung fu fantasy, an Eastern mythology with chivalrous heroes, Taoist sorcerers, and supernatural creatures like ki-rin, heavenly dragons, hopping vampires, ghosts, and demons of a highly structured hell. The wuxia hero extolls altruism, justice, individualism, loyalty, courage, honesty, disregard for material wealth and a desire for glory. She embodies Confucian ideals but follows the Tao arts of kung fu exercise and sorcery, a renaissance woman of the fantastical orient.

China, Korea, or Japan?
This will be a mashup of Asian cultures so that players can write what they know and celebrate what they love, even if it isn't indigenous to a certain time or place in China. My own inspirations are Korean, and I know we have many on E who appreciate Japanese culture. If it can fit into the wuxia genre and it inspires you, we can blur the lines when it comes to historical accuracy.

Pai Sun
The village of Pai Sun lies on the fictional Bamboo River, a realm of pastoral farmland, misty forest, breathtaking mountain paths and forgotten valleys. Upstream lies Pai Sun's sister village of An Yung, the "Silver Garden," and downstream lies the Imperial garrison of Mu Rim and the gates of the Dragon Wall. Though Pai Sun is a simple village, subsisting on farming and fishing, its position on the river ford sees a constant traffic of Imperials, and it lies equidistant from the four rival schools of kung fu which flourish in the region. The honorable Lord Chiang rules Pai Sun with an iron fist and a force of one hundred and twenty-five loyal wardens, and his daughter, the elegant Nam Seon, boasts a dowry fit for a prince.

Plenty more details to come if interest is sufficient. So who's down?

Fantastic!

The Four Rival Schools
All wuxia heroes and villains study some form of kung fu, often over long years. Theirs is a craft which crosses over from physical training into the mystical and spiritual. Although more than these four schools exist in wuxia, these are the four most prevalent.

Shaolin
The fast, aggressive techniques demonstrated by the likes of Ip Man and Bruce Lee are said to have their roots in Shaolin, an order of Buddhist monks turned steely precision weapon against the barbarians beyond the Dragon Wall. The close range forms of grappling and channeling chi into ferocious attacks on vital points is a contest of wills, famously able to bring low even spirits and demons with techniques such as the Drunken Fist, Thousand Hands Buddha Palm, and Wild Demon Staff.

Wudang
Followers of the sorcerous books of the Tao practice forms of alchemy both external and internal. External alchemy concerns the preparation of elixirs and poultices said to grant magical powers, while inner alchemy concerns mystical changes within the self and mastery of chi. Practitioners of Wudang master these arts in the hopes of becoming physically immortal. Because Wudang alchemy involves cinnabar, its alchemists are also masters of poison. Among its sorcerous techniques include Cloud-Ascending Ladder, Eight Trigrams Soaring Dragon Palm, and Ring The Distant Bell Fist.

Emei
The noble art of the sword saint is a harmonious and graceful craft which combines the geometric balance of feng shui with the elegant poise of fencing. Most, but not all students of Emei are trained in the use of a sword, saber, or woman's hairpin. Emei's precision strikes and nimble defenses prove more than a match against larger and physically stronger opponents, earning it a strong following of female martial artists. Although the original masters of Emei and their misty mountain culture have vanished from the world, its beautiful techniques still survive in the Leap of the Heavens, White Eyebrow Prick, and the dread Dim Mak.

Kongtong
The flow of the Tao, oneness with the universe, is best observed in the motions of the Kongtong. Fluid exercises meant to loosen the body to the subtle pull of Tao form the eclectic training of this school, founded on strong principles of community and chivalry. Because the Tao moves the body like a leaf in the wind, masters of this art are said to be perfectly inexhaustible. The students of Kongtong are an urban breed, trained in the use of unexpected weapons such as the fan, the weighted bracelet, the scarf, and the walking cane. These extravagant, unpredictable forms include Flower Form, Seven Harms Fist, and Between Heaven And Hell Grind.

Since I am going with a monk type, I think Shaolin would be best, though I love the idea of Kongtong.

Right. Colour me totally confused!

Do we have to specialise? By choosing one school over another are we restricting our interactions with other characters? Can we create the character and have them assigned to a school based on abilities or do we have to choose a school and create a character to fit? What sort of abilities and character traits are you looking for?

My character concept was going to be the youngest daughter of a rich merchant or possibly a prince - someone with a lot of money anyway - who is a totally spoiled brat. She is given a choice of marrying a man or becoming a nun, and instead runs away to the Wuxia school, where she discovers her true calling and hidden talents. Something like that, anyway?

Not sure if that works...

Either that, or ... Ooooh, no, I don't think I'll reveal this idea publicly...

I don't believe that by picking one school it will limit your interaction with the others, but that doesn't mean that schools and there students don't all think their Kung-Fu is better than the others.  That said yes I think each character should have a general school that they study.  At least that is the impression I got from Dhi hen we were PMing back and forth.

I had a sort of thought for a character similar in vein to the Count of Monte Cristo, someone wrongly imprisoned an an ancient master also in the same prison teaches her the ways of Kung Fu.

Your school will represent who trained you, and hopefully help to provide some flavor for your style of kung fu or sorcery. This is almost always a single school, since true mastery is for most a lifelong pursuit. In many real life martial arts, the highest degree you can earn is only awarded postmortem. As wuxia characters you're wandering masters, not relegated to the school grounds. Wuxia characters encounter one another in the wild, where the different styles can mix and interact- that's part of the fun of kung fu films for many people. For this story, "the wild" will be the region of Pai Sun, away from the schools where you were trained.

You're welcome to invent your own lesser known school, or use another from wuxia, as long as you don't mind providing a description. Some other schools from wuxia would include Beggar's Sect, which would be a sort of urban parkour, and the Qingcheng, Taoist sorcerers who master moves so quick and subtle that they're described as invisible.

They oughtn't be Sara Jones, but you can definitely have some leeway. I'm already using one Korean name, and plenty of wuxia characters are named things like Laughing Rain. Japanese names are a little more distinctive so I would be careful with those, but it's not impossible for a Japanese name to be at home in wuxia.

No, I wish I did! Tabletop games might be a good place to look for the magic of the Tao, distilled from the modern religion of Taoism. Someone else has already done the work for us there of pulling out what's interesting and conducive to kung fu action.

Crash

I am trying to meld Taoist alchemy (external) with a martial art.  Not sure how I am going to do that.  I do like your note on so fast they are invisible.  It kind of reminds me of the flowing, gliding movements of the monks from the recent 47 Ronin movie.

Would a type of Drunken style work?  He is ingesting potions and such in place of actual alcohol or perhaps using alcohol as a base for the potions so he takes on a drunken appearance along with being empowered by the potion?

External alchemy is not only about potions, but also about external changes, including the necromantic arts of animating hopping vampires, and bringing inanimate objects to life, such as in the pulp wuxia film The Shadow where the villain has a CGI flying dagger. But a central theme to kung fu is emulating the strengths of animals, so a tincture might imbue someone with the speed of a tiger, the balance of a monkey, or the hardiness of a bear temporarily. Poultices were used to heal wounds- early Chinese herbal remedies- and elixirs did some truly amazing things like extending the lifespan, bestowing flight, or welcoming a demon into a body.

Fashions
Clothes in wuxia say a lot about a person. For the common person, this is usually a hemp or nettle yarn tunic belted with a sash, loose pants, and a padded jacket fastened with buttons of knotted cord. Women add to this long dresses, and, when working, an apron. Round woven straw hats offer protection from the sun and rain.

The wealthy indulge mainly in silks, and bright colors. Bureaucrats wear ritual capes as part of their offices, and an Imperial Minister's formal robes might trail behind him like a bridal gown. The idle rich of both sexes sport long fingernails to show that they're above menial labor. Elegant formal dresses are traditionally worn by well to do women in the cultures of wuxia; pictured left, they are the Japanese kimono with obi sash (left), the Korean hanbok (middle), and the Chinese hanfu (right).

Martial artists favor short, loose clothing for freedom of movement, and it isn't unusual to see far more skin than is modest on a kung fu master. These special people exist outside social conventions, and it's forgivable to bare a shocking amount of thigh and plunging cleavage.

Shoes are often cloth boots or slippers, with leather boots reserved for hard labor and straw sandals for the very poorest farmers. The wealthy cover their shoes with embroidery. Among cheesecake wuxia art, it's not unusual to see martial artists in narrow platform heels, perhaps inspired by Japanese geta (which elevated people above the filthy market floors) and the maiko okobo (used to train geisha in taking small, delicate steps).

It is possible, but not sure that is exactly what I was looking for.  Not sure exactly what I am looking for actually. ;)

Perhaps the internal Taoist Alchemy is more what I am looking for. I like the three treasures and the golden crucible.  If course I will have my own smutty campy take on that.

Would this sort style work as basis for a (in)famous school; A group of monks who practice sensual tantrist meditative arts (think kama sutra; science of sex and carnal arts) and also drunken fist styled kung-fu mixed with opportunistic weapons (otherwise unarmed but they could pick a ladder and go crazy with it). They use narcotics (nay, they master all narcotics) over course their careers. Overall philosophy of the style or monk order is to embrace rapture of life and it's joys and not neglect no pleasure of life from your life to build rapture in yourself to reach for enlightenment (one nick names for style practitioners is called 'The grinning monk' as true practitioner of the style will die smiling, always).

Dhi

I think it could work. The monks might be viewed as a darker sect, as usually in wuxia the hedonists are the villains, and the heroes adhere to Confucian ideals. According to legend the Shaolin drunken masters were allowed to drink wine after receiving it as a gift of thanks from an official; otherwise monks were held to rigorous discipline. Maybe there's a similar story behind the Grinning Monks, who helped an emperor's romantically icy wife to discover her inner tigress.

Zaer Darkwail

Ok, I will work with that then :). I will write a longer background origin but idea is that despite monks do sex, drugs and alcohol it's because they preach about joys of life and not deny yourself to experiment and find your own pleasure. However the unholiest thing to them is to find pleasure in selfishness (they do not promote cheating; they would rather spark romance and lust between established couple than lecherously seduce wife to stray example).

For some reason the idea of playing a spoiled merchant's daughter who wants to be a badass kung fu chick and who my daddy bribes some such person to train me is sticking in my head. An enthusiastic to the point of obnoxious apprentice type who happens to be usefully very rich and pretty? Just throwing it out there.

I'm thinking of a courtesan who just happens to turn out to be the daughter of a sword master. Would that work?

Angie

I'm thinking of going with a Shaolin girl who has a lot of troubles and trauma in her past that she hasn't yet worked through, so her understanding of techniques is at mastery level, but her discipline is about as good as season 1 Prince Zuko (yeah, that's a timely reference, for those who don't get it that means her discipline would be on the low end of the scale). Very angry, prone to lashing out, all that fun stuff.

The character's name is Ibuki, and she's from the Street Fighter video game series.

In the video game, she's a ninja, but her image might have that peasant/commoner look you're going for - fabric that is not silk, colors that are not bright, wraps instead of shoes, etc.  Also, she has a bit of cheesecake with the exposed hips and thighs.

I will have more about her school and her form of martial arts later.  I am too tired to write the rest up at the moment.

Background:

Early Tragedy
Shin Min was born in a village so tiny it didn’t have a name.  It was a poor village near the forest of Jeju.  The forest had a bad reputation as haunted, but Shin Min’s village seemed to suffer no ills from it.  This was explained by the village’s dedication to their ancestors who it was believed protected them from the ghosts of Jeju.  Despite the poverty of her village Shin Min was a happy child who played with her best friend Yu Fan-fay along the forest edge and in the rice paddies tended with care as their ancestors had done.  This pastoral tranquility was shattered by an imperial patrol sent to Jeju to assess the forest for harvesting lumber.  Shin Min village welcomed them with open arms giving the soldiers what food they had and entertained them with song and drink.

The soldiers took advantage of the village’s hospitality and when they tried to take advantage of some of the village girls the elders reminded the soldiers of their duty.  The soldiers cut them down for their “disrespect” as they did with the rest of the village.  Shin Min and Yu Fan-fay escaped into Jeju.  When the soldiers attempted to follow they were chased off by the ghosts of Jeju swearing never to return to such a cursed place.  They told their commander that the village was attacked by the evil spirits of the forest and that it and the forest should be left alone.

Training
Shin Min-hee and Yu Fan-fay became lost in the Jeju for what seemed like forever before coming to the old vine covered wall of the Seonjo temple.  The Taoist masters had long cared for Jeju and the spirits within.  Long ago the forest had been cursed and the Seonjo masters worked to slowly undo this vile work and release their former ancestors from their torment.  The two orphan girls were taken in by the school and began their studies of the Tao with the school’s masters.  Shin Min possessed great balance with her and a respect for her ancestors that impressed her teachers.  She began her journey of the three treasures and her internal exploration of the golden crucible within herself.  Yu Fan-fay was bitter at her ancestors and sought her balance among the studies of the external alchemies of the Seonjo masters.  Despite their obvious differences Shin Min and Yu Fan-fay were even by the other’s side and they only grew closer as they grew older.  It was her love of Yu Fan-fay that blinded Shin Min to the bitterness Yu Fan-fay harbored in her heart toward the ancestors she felt failed to protect their village.

Betrayal
Yu Fan-fay delved into the forbidden lore of the school’s former masters and learned how to entrap and control the ghosts of her ancestors.  She used her alchemy to bind the ghosts of their old village to her will and with their help Yu Fan-fay hunted down the soldiers that harmed their village and slaughtered many of them binding their ghosts to her as well.  Shin Min found out about the dark sorceries Yu Fan-fay was practicing and confronted her lover, pleading for her to stop and beg their master’s forgiveness.  It was these same arts that had cursed Jeju hundreds of years ago and Yu Fan-fay had undone much of the work the school had been working towards.  Shin Min wanted justice too, but not at the expense of the spirits of their ancestors.  Yu Fan-fay refused to end her quest for vengeance and was angered that Shin Min was unhappy with what she was done.  They fought that night for what seemed like hours until Shin Min was able to gain the upper hand, but could not strike her former lover down.  Yu Fan-fay summoned the ghosts of Shin Min’s family to fight on her behalf.  With Shin-Min unwilling to harm her family Yu Fan-fay used the distraction to escape.

Aftermath
Determined to put an end to Yu Fan-fay’s vengeance Shin Min chose to leave Seonjo before her training was complete.  She has wandered the Bamboo River looking for any signs of Yu Fan-fay and the remaining soldiers that massacred her village.  While doing so Shin Min has continued to hone the skills her master taught her and uses them to help others be that defending the innocent or healing the sick.  Recently she has come to the village of Pai Sun based on rumors that some of the remaining soldiers had been given positions in the honorable Lord Chiang’s guard and where ever rumors of the soldiers cropped up Yu Fan-fay was rarely far behind.

I'm interested in playing someone like this:

Kitana went to the Kongtong school where she mastered dual wielding fans.  Each fan can be used to create gusts of wind, allowing her to blow opponents off their feet, glide, enhance her jumping and leaping, and even fly limited distances.  She can also use the fans themselves as projectiles which return to her hand after being thrown, or she can remove the four daggers and use them in melee or for throwing.

Dhi, please let me know if she seems like she would be a good fit for the game.  Thanks!

Am I too late, Dhi?
You're not too late. The amount of interest has really surprised me, though. I'm counting thirteen potential players, and that's more than we can gracefully fit into a party-based adventure.

So, I'd like to further develop Pai Sun and its sister cities, the Dragon Wall and the surrounding environs, and open up plotting to divergent stories that are player-driven instead of all bottlenecked around my replies. I know that wuxia may be a genre you're not all comfortable writing plots for, and if I turn things over without any guidance some may be at a loss for how to proceed. So I'm looking at a light sandbox to accommodate everyone.

The look I'm going for personally is inspired by Korean manhwa artists like Kim Hyung Tae, Huk Yo Suk, Kwon Yun Jeong, and Olivia830. A photographic style would be risky for me as GM because I may continue to need images... but if you find a real life model who really suits your character, go for it!

With luck we won't have a Who Framed Roger Rabbit divide between the two.

I have submitted a "work-in-progress" character, but as I have absolutely no idea what most of you are talking about, I am going to wait and see if some sort of guidance is forthcoming before I try and complete her.
Absolutely. The background you pitched to me is a great fit for wuxia, although working at the schools (each of which are remote from Pai Sun, as martial arts schools tend to be) and living in Pai Sun would represent quite a commute. It's not impossible, especially in the realm of wuxia, for a hard-working girl to bring pails of water each day to the four schools, scrub the floors, and still have time for rest. It's the amazing, impossible kind of stories that precede kung fu masters. But if you want something closer, something less fantastical, perhaps she no longer works on school grounds.

By the end of today I intend to develop the area a little better. Once I do we can open up world building and discuss stories.

In the meantime, how does this sit with everyone?

The Five Elements of the Tao
The cosmic forces of Yin and Yang shape all life in an imperfect mixture. Depending on where a person falls within this scale, they may be said to favor Water (almost pure Yin), Metal (mostly Yin), Earth (balance), Wood (mostly Yang), or Fire (almost pure Yang). Popular belief is that those of each element hew close to a certain personality type, have certain tendencies in love, and have strengths or weaknesses against the other elements. Even if untrue, these stereotypes may color others' perceptions of you.

Water
Those of the Water element were often born in the winter. History recalls many Waters who were receptive to demands, an indispensable anchor, at their most creative when under the strictest limitations, and they're said to be motivated by social bonds. In love, Waters are said to be pure submissives. In kung fu, the soft palm embodies Water, a flowing counter to the most severe strike, turning the enemy's own momentum against him. Water has the upper hand against Fire, falls to Earth, and fosters Wood.

Metal
Those of the Metal element were often born in autumn. Cool, curious, experimenting, Metals are thought to be especially attuned to their own unique voices and wonderful artists and speakers, often motivated by obsession. In love, Metals are said to prefer submission. In kung fu, Metal is embodied in the knife chop hand position, an open palm whose narrow striking surface is suited to exploiting a single vulnerable point. Metal has the upper hand against Wood, falls to Fire, and fosters Water.

Earth
Those of the Earth element were often born in the weeks of transition between each of the four seasons. These heroes tend to be sympathetic and adaptive to new opportunities ina changing world, often motivated by kindness. In love, Earths are said to be switches. In kung fu, the tiger claw hand position embodies Earth, able to deliver harsh strikes when needed but also divert an opponent's hasty attack. Earth has the upper hand against Water, falls to Wood, and fosters Metal.

Wood
Those of the Wood element were often born in the spring. Many of this element are pioneering spirits, incensed by the things in the world they feel ought to change, often motivated by competition. In love, Woods are said to prefer dominance. In kung fu, the snake hand position embodies Wood, a versatile offense with surprising angles of attack. Wood has the upper hand against Earth, falls to Metal, and fosters Fire.

Fire
Those of the Fire element were often born in the summer. It is written that these heroes are full of intensity and energy, driven by the passions of the heart, often motivated by fame and recognition. In love, Fires are said to be purely dominant. In kung fu, the punching fist embodies Fire, a direct strike which batters down defenses by merit of superior will alone. Fire has the upper hand against Metal, falls to Water, and fosters Earth.

If you don't mind a quick word, there's an RPG called Qin that is a mythic China game, and designed for pretty much the setting you have here (if somewhat more serious) It has quite a lot of cool stuff for internal and external alchemy, the ghost busting arts of the Fang Shi, and a variety of wuxia martial and athletic abilities. It might provide some pretty good background for you to pillage :)

I'd enjoy playing this myself, but I don't know that I could write a convincing female character :)

Okay, given that I was originally going to resurrect my halfling thief character for your other idea, how about if she used to work at the school, but got fired for petty pilferage and now "works" as a cut-purse in the town?

Please check out my latest A/A post.

Definitely possible. There will be a lot of purses in Pai Sun at the time of the Paper Boat Festival, which brings in people from all over.

Here's some more setting information to start things off.

The village of Pai Sun lies along the fictional Bamboo River, where a rural class of people live as farmers and fishermen. Upriver sits the sister village of An Yung, the "Silver Garden" of the Imperial Ministry, and downriver is located Mu Rim, an important Imperial garrison for the Dragon Wall. Once, the manor of Lord Chiang was a bastion against the barbarians beyond the wall, before their great number forced its construction. Now the village's troubles come in the form of smugglers without qualms of kidnapping farmer's daughters, from the Taoist cult of the Black Crane who conduct death rituals in the ancient places of the river valley, and from the jealous Lim family of An Yung, who have long opposed Lord Chiang.

Meandering garden stone paths wind through the fast-growing bamboo sprigs to connect dozens of small shops, shrines, and leisure halls at the heart of the village, where the hard-working people of Pai Sun- as well as their lazy layabout sons and daughters- gather year round. Placid paths lined by stone lanterns branch out from the heart of the town through its green farmland, crossing Buddhist lillypad ponds on stone bridges and admiring slow churning water wheels as they grind the day's rice down into flour. One such water wheel is still now, as the mill is instead turned by a lone prisoner who is said to be an enslaved demon.

The old levees around the Bamboo River mark like the rings of a tree the many centuries and many tides Pai Sun has existed here. Its traditions date back to a time of animism, before the Imperials came to enforce order, and legends abound abotu the formation of the river delta by dragon claws scratching for the clay with which to make man, about the melting ice kingdoms which filled the valleys with fog, about the wangliang ogres who predated humankind, and about the mischievous bajang who sprout from the forest trees like fruit to do evil.

Each year, the friendship between Pai Sun and its sister village is celebrated in a festival of exotic markets, purification in the Bamboo River, and exchange of gifts. This year, the theme of the festival is the settling of old debts, as Lord Chiang's only daughter, the elegant Nam Seon, is arranged to marry into the Lim family and end the old feud. In the evenings of the festival, the paper boats which give the Paper Boat Festival its name arrive from An Yung bearing candies, small tokens, well wishes, and even confessions of desire. From here, a new wave of paper boats is set adrift from Pai Sun to the soldiers in Mu Rim, thanking them for their service with sticky rice treats, letters, and perfumed mementos.

With so much on his plate, the honorable Lord Chiang does not often concern himself with the quarrels of the rival schools as they spill into the leisure halls of Pai Sun, onto its garden paths. Occasionally, these pugilists will cross the line by harming innocents or defaming the Lord's name. Here is where the Judges enter, agents in the Lord's employ authorized to extract confession by any means deemed necessary. A confessed criminal could expect to be shipped beyond the Dragon Wall to serve in the Legion, or, per her right, to win a trial by combat for her freedom.

Dhi

Here are a few NPCs to help spark ideas.

The elegant Nam Seon
School: Emei
Element: Wood
The Lord's headstrong daughter has long lived cloistered in Pai Sun. Now urged to marry into the Lim family to settle an old debt, Nam Seon has become suddenly determined to experience the world. That her father forbids it has only made Nam Seon more devious and crafty. She is a young woman born into wealth with both a sense of entitlement and an air of nobility, at heart wishing to abandon her duty to her father and Pai Sun and pursue a life of pleasure. Her build is graceful, her footsteps small and soft, and her lustrous black hair is said never to have been cut by an opponent's blade.

Scholar Lin Sung
School: Kongtong
Element: Metal
Coming from the Imperial village of An Yung is an ambitious official seeking to cut her teeth on reporting the many failures of Lord Chiang's rule. In documenting the laziness of its workers, the rampancy of its criminal element, and the callous behavior of its kung fu masters, Lin Sung hopes to secure an illustrious position in the capital. She is a mature woman with a pragmatic view of honor and a willingness to do most anything to get ahead. Being shackled to a desk job has left her on the curvy side, with many little nervous quirks.

Judge Li Shin
School: Shaolin
Element: Fire
A young Legalist with a hot temper, Li Shin stands firm to keep the peace during the Paper Boat Festival. Since at the Lord's insistence she is made not to intervene in honorable quarrels, Li Shin seethes to assert herself as true champion of Pai Sun, and ultimately, to punish transgressors in her own unusual way. Ultimately the responsibility of Judge has come too early in Li Shin's life, and she often makes mistakes or allows teasing to get the better of her. She is a sinuous, lithe woman with snakelike movements able to send shivers down the spine.

What I have so far...will format it when Dhi gets us a character sheet

Name: Shin Min hee
Player: Crash
Concept: Taoist Alchemist and wandering goodie-goodie
Trouble:  Ancestor thieving sorceress of an ex-lover
School: Wudang
Element: Earth
Age: 23
On’s: On’s
Off’s: Off’s

Appearance:
Hair: Black
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5’ 3”
Weight: 120 lbs

Personality:
Chivalrous: Shin Min-hee is honor-bound to help those in need. She protects those who cannot help themselves.  She is also a sucker for a good damsel in distress story which can get her into all sorts of trouble.  This can often put her on the wrong side of the law if the law is failing in their duty.

Helpful: Shin Min-hee does not just protect people with her fists.   She is also a Taoist alchemist and knows the arts of herbology and healing.  She is adept at acupressure and massage as well.  Shin Min has helped as many if not more with her healing concoctions than with her wudang and there are villages along the Bamboo River that know her only as a travelling healer.

Respectful  Growing up in the village that she did Shin Min-hee has always had a healthy respect for her elders and her ancestors.  This was reinforced by her masters at the Seonjo temple.  Even though Shin Min focused on the internal Tao of Neidan, the temples focus on the spirits of Jeju and their ancestors has bred a young woman with a healthy respect for those that came before her.

Balanced Shin Min-hee’s training focuses on the balance of the three treasures of Jing (essence), Qi (breath) and Shen (spirit).  She strives to maintain this balance in all things which means indulging her desires as much as it means setting them aside when needed.

Martial Art:
The internal arts of Seonjo wudang endeavor to perfect the golden crucible within its practitioners.  When perfect this allows the martial artist to resist extremes of temperature, discomfort and pain.  A Seonjo master is never sick and lives to an age unheard of by normal men and women.  Practitioners of Seonjo wudang are easy to pick out as they often wear little in the way of clothing so that then can test their bodies against the elements. This is an ancient custom and accepted by most as an indication of membership in the Seonjo school.  Seonjo martial artists often attach benedictions to their ancestors to their silken clothing in honor of them.

The perfection of balance sought by Seonjo martial artists results in feats of prowess that border on the supernatural.  A Seonjo martial artist can leap incredible distances or run across a pond without disturbing the water’s surface.  The fighting style of Seonjo wudang utilizes flowing movements and harsh open handed strikes to weave among foes.  Favorite weapons of Seonjo wudang include fighting sticks, butterfly swords, spears and bo-staffs.  Some techniques include Thousand Ancestor Stride, Ghost Tiger Palm and Cloud-Ascending Ladder.

Pai Sun
Her inquiries into the soldiers and a certain dark haired young woman garnered the attention of an ambitious scholar (Lin Sung) intent on documenting the failings of Pai Sun’s ruler Lord Chiang.

Lady Kitsune

I haven't found an image I like but so far my story is probably going to go the route of Korean vicious court politics. I think a young princess of a third Queen who is gaining favor from the King over the First Queen who has yet to bear a son. Since the third Queen is still of good childbearing age, the jealous First and Second Queen plot backstabbing and poisoning to kill the Third Queen and her daughter who at the moment is the only heir. Hence, the Third Queen finds out about it and sends her daughter off with her trusted hwarang guard who goes into hiding with the child. She grows up, has mad skills and plots vengeance for the death of her mother and take her rightful place at court....or something like that. I'm still working on it in my head.  :P
I am working on it, I swear!

Zaer Darkwail

Lots players indeed :P. Considering I got other things on plate (busy), so I will not have time to make the char and so unlikely play also. But anyone feel free pick my idea of grinning monk school ;).

Kadigan

Dhi seemed to like it, so...basic stuff, obviously without a standard format or template.

Name:  Mei Sha
Age: 23
Height: Tall
Build: Lithe
Home: Wúqióng Desert

Style/Skill: Tumbling Pebble Style, A branch of Shaolin – A style that emphasizes kicking strikes and blocks over the fists. It depends on one’s flexibility and quickness, often the most proficient users are the ones who can bend and twist. A series of exercises exist to help with the stretching and pulling necessary. The fists and arms are used, but mainly for quick jabs and blocking, the more powerful and deadly strikes come from the legs, shins, and knees. The lower body is almost always in motion during a fight with this style.

Bio: Mei was born to a nomadic desert tribe, who often skirted the edge of the desert, venturing into the grassy plains only to raid the supplies, food, and water of the villages foolish enough to build upon the edge. They also participated in trade, several valuable metals and gems being found only in hidden areas of the desert that were well kept secrets. In her tribe you either helped maintain the main camp with gathering of supplies or were sent on raids, depending on skills possessed.

Mei showed an aptitude for the martial arts at an early age, and was placed into the lessons with the aging master, along with dozens of others. While there were stronger, there were quicker, and more proficient, she was perhaps the best at a balance of all things, making her a force to be reckoned with. Once of age enough to begin participating in raids, she at first was a scout, a small beggar child seeking out defenses, where things were stored amongst others, necessitating a bit of play acting.  Later years saw her doing some trading with the villages they were friendly with, as her body seemed to put others at both ease and distraction. She of course honed her skills on raids themselves, striking out at whoever and whatever she could, often picking out the Captain of the Guards on the larger villages to challenge, to test herself.

It was during one raid of a small border town she saw the announcement, the desert girl came across a realization that she simply no longer wished to be a part of the tribe. It was all simply a large circle, go attack and return. She wanted more out her life, and more FOR her life. Gathering her fair share, along with a few others, from the raid (one often carried all they possessed into a raid, as being split up was a very real possibility) she simply stole away in the aftermath, finding it easier to simply move on then say her goodbyes.

Notes: Mei has no compulsions either way of “honorable combat” though she understands the concept she simply does not believe it. Fights are meant to be won, and if someone gets up they might win. Therefore kicking when down is perfectly acceptable. She carried small daggers to aid in the raids, though often times would forgo it in favor of her martial arts, and also has a small pouch of ground glass mixed with sand. She is also perfectly willing to stab someone in the back, a rare anomaly for a close knit desert people, and connections and bonds mean very little to her beyond “what can you do for me.” She finds both men and women attractive, but only those who again fall into the previous category.

delved into the forbidden lore of the school’s former masters and learned how to entrap and control the ghosts of her ancestors.

Pai Sun
Her inquiries into the soldiers and a certain dark haired young woman garnered the attention of an ambitious scholar (Lin Sung) intent on documenting the failings of Pai Sun’s ruler Lord Chiang.

名字 Name : Wu Cai
功夫 Style : Emei
五行 Element : Metal
喜歡 Ons : Comfort, Happiness, Romance, Strong and Moral People
反感 Offs : Thievery, Poisoners, Liars, Sex without Emotional Attachment, Cowardice

高度 Height : 5'8"
个子 Build : Slender
描写 Description : A gorgeous and wealthy swordswoman. She dresses in the finest silks and her appearance is always immaculate. She carries a very expensive and very sharp sword that is gilded with symbols of wealth and protection. Her delicate features and graceful movements tend to draw the eye and keep it.
个性 Personality : Cai is calm, moralistic, and loyal. She has strong feelings of duty to her father and her family, her lineage, the ruling government and her former Mistress at the emei school she attended. She is not afraid of combat and somewhat detached and pitiless towards those she defeats, other than those she feels have been deceived into fighting her.

传记 Story :

Cai is the only child of a wealthy merchant, Wu Sheng. Sheng built a fortune trading with northern nomads and leading caravans to the west and his estate is one of the landmarks of the little city of Pai Sun. Today he is well off enough that the journeys east and the dangerous negotiations with the north are done by those who work for him and he enjoys the comforts of his hard work.

Sheng's wife, Laidi, died giving birth to Cai. Sheng was rather devastated by this and has never thought of taking another woman. His dreams of passing on his business to his son were transferred to Cai. She was raised with the best education he could afford, including sending her to the prestigious Emei school to learn to defend herself and his estate. Cai was a very dutiful child, her only real temptation coming in old stories and books. She dreams of exploring the world, partly due to her father's many fascinating stories about northern nomads and eastern barbarians, and partly due to the tales of other travelers she has read in his library.

At the Emei school Cai was assigned to a harsh mistress who thought of her as a spoiled child who did not deserve the opportunity she had been given. Cai was put through many very draining and rigorous exercises before she was taught even a simple secret of kung fu. Her stoic manner and grace under the harsh treatment slowly won her Mistress over and she was judged worthy to learn the secrets after all. The praise of her mistress was one of the few things that would consistently crack Cai's detached demeanor, even a slight compliment causing the girl to break into a wide smile. The two became very close as the training intensified and Cai's duties soon included pleasuring his mistress. Cai enjoyed this greatly and approached it no differently than any other aspect of her training - with dedicated and excellence and willingness to train long hours. She saw the request for pleasure as a signal that she was worthy to do it, and the praise she received afterwards always meant the world to her.

It was with great difficulty then that she obeyed the summons of her father to return before her training was formally completed. His health had taken a turn for the worse and he was now confined in bed most hours of the day. He needed his daughter as his eyes and ears and enforcer in day to day affairs. Cai was devastated to be separated from her Mistress, but loyal daughter that she was she returned.

For the past few months Cai has been a regular at Lord Chiang's court, appearing in place of her father and answering to the Lord when he needs the assistance or input of Pai Sun's wealthiest citizens. She also is commonly seen in the marketplace, patrolling her father's traders with an almost bored look on her face. Attempts to arrange a marriage for her have all been gracefully and diplomatically deflected.

Okay so rough draft...thoughts? If anyone wants to integrate backstories let me know. :)

Love the character Red.  I am not sure she would have crossed paths with Shin Min other than maybe at the market but if you want to establish any backstory or former run ins with her I am fine with that.  Shin Min has also traveled as a healer.

If anyone wants to have run into Shin Min let me know. Rivals, compatriots and other connections are welcome.

I think it depends on how long you want Shin Min to have been in Pai Sun when our story starts. If she is just arriving it might be fun to have them meet and play it out. Cai would certainly help protect her little town from an angry sorceress. Or if Shin Min has been there for some time her and Cai could already be friends, maybe having tea together every few days or something like that and maybe investigating strange incidents together for signs of evil sorcery. Could be fun either way. :)

I had originally had Shin Min recently arriving in Pai Sun, but then changed it so she has been their long enough to catch the eye of Dhi's NPC while she was asking around about certain guards and sorceress.  Still that doesn't mean she has been around for very long.

Maybe we can have them meet at the market.  Perhaps a thief stealing something from Cai's family's stall?  That is if Dhi doesn't already have a plot set up for us to start.  If she does we can have them having met recently before the game starts.

Dhi - Are you planning an opening scene we should be thinking about or are we going to run-a-muck for a bit first?

Okay, how does this work:

名字 Name : Hēinǐ  - 嘿你 (no family name)
功夫 Style : A rather strange blend of Shaolin, Emei and Kongtong. She knows a few Wudang techniques but is really not very good at them. None of her techniques are anything like the way the masters practice them. She is actually best at Kongtong, and finds the gentle, fluid moves to be most useful, however the main teachings of this school are unknown to her.

五行 Element : Fire
喜歡 Ons : Having enough to eat, having somewhere warm to sleep, not getting caught, daydreaming about her parents, learning, being unnoticed, being useful, being underestimated.
反感 Offs : Jobsworths, hunger, cold, getting caught, being noticed, feeling useless, being seen for what she really is, being lonely.

高度 Height : 149 cm
个子 Build : Slight
描写 Description : Heini is short and skinny. she has long, spiky, dark brown hair that generally is kept in various braids to keep it from flopping all; over the place. She generally wears dun coloured clothing, often little more than rags, although occasionally she will be seen wearing something finer. She has, from time to time, been mistaken for a child, even though she is actually in her early 20s.
个性 Personality : Heini is lonely, and unloved. She is not really selfish, she just seems that way, because she always looks out for number one. She has no real sense of right and wrong, and has no issues with taking what is not hers in order to survive. In fact she is rather good at taking stuff. There is a streak of good in her, she is not totally irredeemable, and if the right people were to take her in hand she could become a useful member of society. However as it stands, she is on a slippery slope towards evil. She is remarkably bright and learns things very quickly.

传记 Story : Heini is a foundling. She was left with the monks at the Kongtong school and raised by them, however she was never fully accepted as a member of the school, seeing as many of the students there were the children of wealthy people. She earned her keep, from the age of nine, by running errands, sweeping floors, doing laundry. As she got older, she slowly found herself working harder, doing more difficult jobs, rising earlier and going to bed later. It was not cruelty on the part of the monks, nor was it in any way deliberate, in fact it was not even thoughtlessness. It was just that there were things that needed doing, and she found herself doing them.

As she worked, cleaning the slates and smoothing the sand-boards, and wiping down the chalk boards at the end of each day in the classrooms, she would read what was written and learn from it - the monks had taught her to read, write and add up, and no more - and so she taught herself a variety of kung fu techniques, none of them done correctly, and all of them a mishmash of different skills.

She would also supplement her meagre diet with petty pilferage from the kitchens. She discovered that the movement techniques of Kongtong leant themselves especially well to stealthy movement and concealment. What she lacked was the spirit of community and chivalry, seeing herself as an outsider. She began to do more than simply steal food, taking things of value. There was a small shop in the town where she would take her stolen goods, the unscrupulous shopkeeper would give her a fraction of their actual value, which she would spend on extra food or clothing.

Until one day she was caught red handed. It seemed that her thievery had not gone unnoticed and the monks had set a trap for her that she fell right into. They were admittedly surprised by whom they caught, but her punishment was that she was cast out of the schools and put in prison. The gaol was not especially high security, she was underestimated by everyone. So she easily escaped and made her way back into the town, where she embarked on a life of crime, stealing what she needed to survive and just a little more, putting something by against a possible future when she might need it.

Her one fantasy in this apparently cruel world is that one day her parents will come back for her. She imagines them as being great heroes, warriors, fighting for the greater good. She knows, deep in her heart that they will never return, but her hope that she is wrong keeps her going. In moments of reality, when she acknowledges they are probably dead, she likes to think that they died heroically in battle. Of course, her natural cynicism tells her that her mother was most likely a whore and her father most likely a bandit.

The irony is that, unknown to her, her fantasy is not so very far from the truth...

I have tried not to make her too much of a "Mary-Sue", but if anything needs changing, let me know.

Aww, I'm REALLY late to post interest on this, is there any room for further applicants or did I find this thread too late?
You are not too late, characters have just begun coming in! There's been a lot of interest, but not everyone who expresses interest will necessarily make a character. And, frankly, if we want to move to a loose sandbox structure, the more characters we have, the better.

Dhi - Are you planning an opening scene we should be thinking about or are we going to run-a-muck for a bit first?
The first evening of the festival will be one scene, that's a key component. I like a tea house as a location where people might get together and kung fu duels between rival schools might happen. Perhaps the tea house employs some of our experienced courtesans to play hostess. We could use some additional locations, but, nothing too far from Pai Sun.

Dhi

Shin Min-hee is approved, with the exception of the iPhone product endorsement. Let's keep this game commercial-free! I love the ghosts of Jeju Forest. An old foresting camp with smoky charcoal kilns, village ruins and wronged ancestors sounds like a great location for the Black Crane cult.

Wu Cai is approved. The connection to Lord Chiang's house may put her in the middle of some intrigue between the Chiang and Lin families. I've been discussing with Idlewyld a plot involving Lord Chiang's house, and if that interests you, maybe we should plot together?

Hēinǐ  is approved. The idea that her parents will return for her has some interesting possibilities when dealing with ancestral spirits. If her parents are controlled by Black Crane cultists, there might be an arc to free ghosts such as Shin Min-hee's family and Hēinǐ's parents.

I'll have an OOC thread for plotting and an approved character thread for you to post your sheets today.

名字 Name : Toy Kitana
功夫 Style : Kongtong
五行 Element : Fire
喜歡 Ons : Kindness, generosity, compliments, courage, surprises, affection
反感 Offs : Rudeness, cowardice

高度 Height : Tall (5'10", or 178 cm)
个子 Build : Muscular, busty, curvy
描写 Description : Kitana is a stunningly gorgeous, statuesque, alluring beauty with long black hair and brown eyes
个性 Personality : Outgoing, friendly, charismatic, polite, headstrong, attention-seeking, protective, seductive, teasing

传记 Story :

Kitana grew up in a city where she was sold by her impoverished merchant parents to a local lord to pay off a debt.  The lord intended to train her to be a courtesan and to use her for himself and his allies, but she ran away from home and ended up in the village of Pai Sun.

She started working at one of the village's tea houses as a server.  She was eventually practically adopted by the infertile owners of the tea house who saw her as the daughter they never had.  Her surrogate parents provided for her training at Kongtong and taught her how to entertain at the tea house.

Kitana is now a hostess and entertainer at the tea house, where kung fu duels between rivals schools occasionally happen.  She primarily entertains influential female clients with her dancing, singing and conversation.

Her polite, friendly nature is indicative of the chivalrous, communal aspects of the Kongtong.  Even when the tea house is crowded, Kitana skillfully manuevers her body to avoid bumping into anyone.  She can tirelessly dance for clients, performing a show that features plenty of teasing with her fanblades.

She has been intimate with a select few of the most wealthy, influential clients of the tea house, and she has also provided thorough thrashings to customers who have stepped over the line with her or other tea house workers.

Her parents and the lord who bought her have all died.

At the Kongtong school, Kitana mastered dual wielding fans.

She also uses the fans in her dance routines, opening and closing them to hide or reveal her body.  She also uses the fans to help clients cool down after one of her performances... or to fan their flames of desire for her.

I know everyone's probably got their characters mapped out in their heads and such, but I was curious if anyone who hasn't thrown one in yet might be interested in doing something with twins? I'm kind of considering a different direction.

I was thinking kind of the typical Hawk/Dove situation, one aggressive,e the other shy, perhaps one has a more attacky demeanor, the other defensive. But that's just my first noodle at it. If anyone's interested maybe a PM discussion to suss it out?

名字 Name : Ki, Chun-hyang

功夫 Style : Hwa Rang Mul Sul – The Hwa Rang or “Flower Men” were the royal guard of the of the royal Korean family. The Hwa Rang developed a style of martial arts that pulled from numerous styles such as Tang-lang kung fu using external and internal power and Hsing-I that used characteristics of the five elements. Later added was the Moshuh Nanren, The Secret Shadow Warrior system of China. The combined elements created Hwa Rang Mul Sul and made them a nearly indestructible legion of Men. “Death follows the scent of flowers.”

五行 Element : Fire

喜歡 Ons :Hot sultry moments, overwhelming passion, little bunnies trembling cutely.
反感 Offs :Anything gross

高度 Height :5'2”
个子 Build : Lithe and graceful with a generous decolletage

描写 Description :Dark mysterious eyes that dance with amusement or darken with rage. Their depths hold secrets and swirl with mischief. She has pouty lips that are sweet for kisses or smirk with knowing. Her smile can light up a room or make you shiver from the cold. Her beauty is ethereal as if her skin is powdered with crushed pearls. Her movements are liquid as if she is always in an eternal dance. Her long dark hair is lustrous and soft.

个性 Personality :Chun-hyang can be like night and day. She is quick to laugh and forgive those she cares for and just as likely to take down those who would harm those she loves. She has soft spots for the helpless but can be cold and ruthless and willing to manipulate an outcome in anyway as long as the end result is justice. She is mysterious and haughty as a persona but she will always be on the side of the true and good.

传记 Story: Born into the royal Korean court as the princess of the Third Queen of Goryeo, the darkside of court politics endangered her life. Her mother, unwilling to allow her daughter or unborn son to be killed by the jealous First and Second Queens because they were childless, gave seven year old Chun-hyang into the care of her faithful Hwa Rang Captain.

Kim Wa-na took the child and under cover of night, fled the high court on the eve of the Lunar New Year. Hiding in plain sight in the midst of the Kisaeang of Jinju, he sought sanctuary and protection from his grandmother rumored to be a Wonwha. She now lived as a haengsu training future kisaeng for nobles. As the old woman was nearly untouchable for her reputation and the indignity of a royal princess being in the care of courtesans, the disguise was perfect.

As it was dangerous for Chun-hyang to come out hiding, Chun-hyang trained among the other courtesans and became sought after for her talents in Geommu, sword dancing. This training was mostly a cover for her other more secretive training of Hwa Rang Mul Sul given by her teachers, Kim Wa-na and Madame Lotus.

Chun-hyang was devastated to hear of the death of her mother at the other Queens hands and enraged to hear that the First Queen was now controlling the Destiny of the prince and heir, her brother. The power of the Queens was too great and she trained harder for now she would bide her time and gain the fame she needed to gain audience at the royal court and hopefully her brother's ear.
For now, Chun-hyang must gain fame and notoriety and performing her elegant sword dance for the Lord Chiang and gain the prestige she would need to become who she needed to put her on the path of Justice.

Dhi is still accepting characters, though I think this is a made up fantasy world so the references to Korea and China may need to change to protect the innocent. ;)

She is very cool though and I love the picture.  She looks so dainty yet is a Kung fu bad ass.

Dhi

It's true that we're using a fantasyfied amalgam, so Korean place and people names may be too on the nose. If we get too specific, then we run into issues with location and time period being incompatible between characters, and getting too archaic with history and references most people won't understand. Chun-hyang is otherwise fantastic and I love the amount of authentic detail. If you change the references to real world people and places, I'll happily approve her.

VonDoom

This looks rather interesting. I have rough ideas for a bandit character ... or one that actually counts among the hungry ghosts. Would that be viable or should the characters all be living mortals?
Now this is the Law of the Jungle-
as old and as true as the sky;
And the Wolf that shall keep it may  prosper,

O&O

Dhi

Just human characters. A bandit is definitely doable, though. Something in the style of Dark Cloud?

Florence

... very interested, this is very relevant to my interests.

If you could only see how many gigs of Shaw Brothers movies I have on my hard drive right now. Or my DVDs of classics like 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Five Deadly Venoms. Or the fact that two of my all time favorite video games are Jade Empire and Shenmue. Or how many times I've watched Ip Man and Ip Man 2 on Netflix. xD

Any objection to a character loosely inspired by Lian Nichang from the novel Baifa Monü Zhuan?

Rundown of the character, raised by wolves, badass kung fu vigilante, merciless. She's known as the White Haired Demoness.

If that's okay, then I'm so faceclaiming Li Bingbing playing her in The Forbidden Kingdom if no one else has.

O/O: I was going to make a barebones F-list as a rough summary, but then it logged me out and I lost my progress, so I made a VERY barebones F-list instead: Here.

VonDoom

Hmm, that's a shame, A Chinese Ghost Story was always one of my favorites. Ah well, I'll see about drafting up a character. Couldn't tell you about whether she'd be similar to Dark Cloud, though, my recollection of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is hazy.

If you're familiar with Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei (The Vigilantes in Masks) or the work it's based on (or other TV interpretations thereof), I suppose an approximation might be somewhat of a mix between Chai Hu (the ... well, actually, he is a bandit) and Yan Sanniang (the master thief).

@Florence I assume that's the novel The Bride With White Hair is based on?
Now this is the Law of the Jungle-

Baifa Monu Zhuan is one of my favorites, I loved the idea that white hair comes from closing one's heart to love. The current characters are using illustrations, but if you'd like to use a real model that's alright by me.

I bought Jade Empire on Steam a few weeks ago after not quite finishing it ten years ago. Either it's harder than I remember or I'm terrible at video games now, I pretty much just died repeatedly on the first real fight and gave up.

Hmmm...I note there isn't really an assassin-style clan.  Any possibility of adding a fifth style/clan?  I don;t DO chivalry ;D  Though I suppose that would be kinda out-of-genre.
Instead of obsessing on the person you want to be, focus on who you DON'T want to be. It's much easier to not do certain things than to break your head on some ideal of yourself.

When the dust settles, you may find out you've become who you were supposed to be all along.

That's the one.

The four styles put forward are just the most prevalent. Feel free to adopt other styles from Wuxia or invent your own, as long as you can give us a paragraph or so describing what they're all about. Just keep in mind we're going for a whimsical and sexy tone when thinking about how your assassin operates and how she fits into the world.

Yeah I fully intend to stick to the whimsical and sexy theme.

The important thing in that fight is to KEEP moving.  Don't try to defeat any opponent at ALL in a stand-up fight- the cannon will mow you down, or you'll get mobbed. Hit and run.

The problem is an assassin doesn't really hew very closely to the code of xia. Or, really, at all, being all about money and fear and power.

Unless, perhaps, she has disavowed her clan...hmmm. Let me do a little research.

What do you think of using this image as character inspiration?

Spoiler: Click to Show/Hide

@Nowherewoman I don't think anything in the Code of Xia or the Jianghu prevents acting as an assassin -- provided she only takes jobs targeting fellow martial artists and is not excessively cruel (outside of personal grievances). A 'slay all evil' type assassin sect rather than the classic image of the unscrupulous poison-murderer?

Actually, I'm working on a thought that involves a sort of clan like the Fraternity in Wanted- a clan that sought out corrupt officials and warlords and killed them despite their guards. But, as in the  movie, over the years, they devolved to killers-for-hire.  MC is a throwback, a believer in the Clans' old code, and defects when she is ordered to kill a young man over a simple monetary debt.

Something like that.  I've got the basic styles and techniques down, just working on some history and symbolism.

OK, how's this, Dhi?

Bǎi bìng xié (One Hundred Evils)

Taking its name from the proverb 'One Justice can overcome one hundred Evils', this clan began its existence as a sort of 'court of last resort', hunting down and slaying corrupt officials and powerful bandits and warlords who were, for whatever reason, immune to official legal channels.  Over the generations, alas, the Bǎi bìng xié have declined, as do all mortals, until now they are little more than a collection of mercenaries and assassins-for-hire. It is rumored, however, that a small handful of the clan remain true to its tenets:

The visage of Justice cannot be hidden: no true member of One Hundred Evils will make any attempt watsoever to hide their identity, by mask, disguise, or other means.

The eyes of the Accused must see the face of the Judge: Bǎi bìng xié will not used ranged weapons of any sort, believing death from a distance to be cowardly and unjust. They will use only bare hands, or small hand weapons (daggers, ring blades, claws) in battle.

Justice without Mercy is no Justice: The Bǎi bìng xié have refined certain techniques of both Snake and Leopard styles, concentrating on crippling and stunning techniques so that death may be as quick and painless as possible.

Did you play it originally on X-Box? The PC version has some framerate issues (which you can find fixes for) that can make it a bit difficult to play.

And yes, the beach scene is a pain. I still lose in that scene sometimes, and I've played the game... well... way too much xD

At any rate, if I can find a nice illustration for her I'd be willing to use it. If anyone could help with finding a white haired picture that fits, I'd be thankful :P Otherwise, I'll just use Li Bingbing, I suppose.

I did play it on X-Box, originally. I wasn't aware of the framerate issue, but I've also been told that keyboard controls are very bad and I should get one of those $60 controllers for it. The main thing holding me back right now is probably basic skill, though.

Bailang Quan (白狼拳)- White Wolf Boxing
White Wolf Boxing is a style largely created by Lian Xue herself, developed by observing the movements of a wolf taking down its prey. It emphasizes a cautious defensive stance, and sudden lunging strikes. A style of cold calculation followed by ferocious attack, it focuses more on finding an opening to attack for maximum damage than on brute force.

How does that sound for my character's fighting style? :D

Edit: Also, question. What kind of booze exists in this setting? :o

Since its an amalgam of Asian cultures, I'd suppose some sort of generic rice wine like sake or huangjiu is probably the standard drink of choice, with a distilled beverage akin to shochu or soju serving as the most common form of hard liquor.

Sadly, I won't get around to actually finishing Lim today, but I drafted up the less text-intense sections for the sheet already at least. Short of it for her background is that she came into leading a bunch of 'righteous bandits' who mostly take taxes from wealthy travelers passing through their territory and share with the poor if they end up with more than they need.

Edit: oh, darn, I just reread the lore posts and saw Lim is already in use. May have to reconsider the name.  :-\

Edit 2: Liem is an alternate Hokkien spelling. That might work.

Bailang Quan sounds like a unique idea with potential for a new kind of flavor. Go for it!

Rice wine and rice beer are going to be the most prevalent booze. Sake or something much like it is detailed in Han writings which influenced a lot of wuxia, and rice wine is central to the myth of the Shaolin drunken masters. I think the stronger liquors definitely have a place in a setting where kung fu masters brawl over the silliest things, and with all the alchemy going on, it would be strange to only have a couple of varieties of liquor.

You can make wine out of any fruit. I can imagine lotus wine, mango wine... plus, I think grapes grow most anywhere and have been cultivated for thousands of years. Then you have mead - honey wine, again this has been around thousands of years.

Beer, rather surprisingly, has been brewed right across the world, also for thousands of years, not necesarily with hops, but anything you can add malt to.

And then you haver the favourite of the steppes, fermented yak's milk!

No shortage of alcoholic beverages. I would be careful with distilled liquors though, because distillation takes specialised equipment and I don't know when it was invented, but it was a lot later than fermenting and brewing - according to Wikipedia the earliest evidence is about a two thousand years ago for distilling water, but the earliest spirit distilleries are only hundreds of years old, which would effectively limit us to a date and/or geographical area, even with artistic licence.

名字 Name : Lian Xue
功夫 Style : Bailang Quan (白狼拳)- White Wolf Boxing
White Wolf Boxing is a style largely created by Lian Xue herself, developed by observing the movements of a wolf taking down its prey. It emphasizes a cautious defensive stance, and sudden lunging strikes. A style of cold calculation followed by ferocious attack, it focuses more on finding an opening to attack for maximum damage than on brute force. The fact that her nails are often worn long and sharp is a fact that is fully taken advantage of with this style.

In addition to unarmed combat, Lian Xue has also incorporated the use of the jian into her style. The fundamentals of the style remain unchanged; whether fighting with bare fist or blade, one must keep their defenses up until the moment to strike presents itself, then attack without mercy.

She is also skilled enough with a bow to use one to hunt, though she hasn't mastered it to the same degree as unarmed combat or sword-fighting.

五行 Element : Metal
喜歡 Ons : Wine, tea, music, meat, worthy opponents, wolves, courage, passionate sex.
反感 Offs : Dishonest people, disloyal people, cowardice, vegetarian meals.

高度 Height : 5'9
个子 Build : Slender, athletic, subtle curves.
描写 Description : The first thing that comes to anyone's attention when they see Xue is the stark white color of her hair. It falls long and straight down her back, and is rarely tied up. Apart from that, she has a slender form, but one built for combat, with subtle curves that serve to fill out her frame without looking cartoonishly big on her. She tends towards black over colorful when picking out clothes, with the particular style of clothes depending on the situation. Her nails are often kept long, filed to a sharp point; something she takes full advantage of in battle. The jian at her side is one constant, regardless of how else she is dressing.
个性 Personality : Despite the stereotype of her element, she doesn't lean particularly towards submission in matters of romance and sex. She is rather flexible in that regard, somewhat defaulting to dominance.

On the surface, she can seem like a cold person, keeping herself guarded from strangers. She keeps a healthy distance from people she doesn't know, and even some that she does. She may open up to those who get close to her, though she finds sex easier than romance, or even friendship. She doesn't trust easily, but when she does, its an unshakeable bond. She in incredibly loyal to those she considers friends, or more.

She has a strong sense of justice, and can be ruthless in her pursuit of it, punishing evil-doers harshly. She cares little for the official law, however, obeying it when she agrees with it, and disobeying it when she disagrees with it. This can get in her in trouble, and she's always relied on her martial talents to get her back out of trouble again.

She has also picked up some habits from her early childhood which have proven hard to shake. She prefers to hunt her own food, though she has learned to enjoy food prepared for her as well. She loves meat, and dislikes having meals without some sort of meat in it, even if it's just fish or chicken. She also has learned the pleasures of good wine and good tea. Most importantly, when it comes to dining, she enjoys having people to trust to share it with. That last one, however, is a luxury she has rarely afforded herself.

传记 Story : Raised by wolves as a child, Xue spent her earliest memories learning how to hunt and defend herself in the wilderness. She developed a deep fondness for wolves, and even many years later, seems able to bond with them more than with people. Still, she did not spend all her life with wolves. She was eventually taken in by the Lian family, taking their family name as she had none of her own. It was from them that she learned how to behave in civilized society, and concepts of morality such as right and wrong. She also began to refine the martial skills she had learned from watching wolves, into a proper martial arts, with the help of more experienced martial arts masters.

Skilled with the martial arts, she began her vigilantism small, beating up bullies and petty criminals, growing more bold as she grew more skilled. She defended the innocent and punished the guilty, and was absolutely ruthless in her dispensing of justice. Eventually, she moved on, wandering the land and combating evil where she found it, and perfecting her martial arts skills. Somewhere along that road, her hair turned white, and that is one story she refuses to tell.

Somehow or another, her travels now take her to the village of Pai Sun.

Ki Chun-hyang
名字 Name : Ki, Chun-hyang

功夫 Style : Hwa Rang Mul Sul – The Hwa Rang or “Flower Men” were the royal eunuch guard of a royal family in a far off province. The Hwa Rang developed a style of martial arts that pulled from numerous styles such as Tang-lang kung fu using external and internal power and Hsing-I that used characteristics of the five elements. Later added was the Moshuh Nanren, The Secret Shadow Warrior system of a neighboring land. The combined elements created Hwa Rang Mul Sul and made them a nearly indestructible legion of warriors.

传记 Story: Born into the royal court of her land as the princess of the Third Queen, the darkside of court politics endangered her life. Her mother, unwilling to allow her daughter or unborn son to be killed by the jealous First and Second Queens because they were childless, gave seven year old Chun-hyang into the care of her faithful Hwa Rang Captain.

Kim Wa-na, the loyal Captain, took the child and under cover of night and fled the high court on the eve of the Lunar New Year. Hiding in plain sight in the midst of a training school for Kisaeang, he sought sanctuary and protection with his grandmother rumored to be a Wonwha from long ago. She now lived as a haengsu or elite concubine, training future kisaeng for nobles.

Chun-hyang was devastated to hear of the death of her mother poisoned at the other Queens' hands. She became even more enraged to hear that the First Queen was now controlling the Destiny of the prince and heir, her brother. It took much convincing from her “Father” Wa-na and her madame that she was outmatched as she was. The power of the Queens was too great and she would never be able to pass hundreds of trained warriors just to exact her rage fueled revenge. Madame Lotus chastised Chun-hyang for not thinking things through and disregarding her training. A kiseang had skills no warrior had and a plan was laid out. Properly humbled, she trained harder for now she would bide her time and gain the fame she needed to gain audience at the royal court and hopefully her brother's ear. Even if it took her years.

For now, Chun-hyang must gain fame and notoriety. Her beginning will hopefully start by performing her elegant sword dance for the Lord Chiang and his daughter to gain the prestige she needs to put her on the path of Justice.

I am working on it, I swear!

Working a bit more on Liem (my cat -- Rusty -- is doing well so far, just hope the terrible heat isn't affecting him too badly while I'm at work), is anyone familiar with cloth armor that would be setting appropriate and that a bandit clan chief might wear when not in leather/fur? Looking for something she might put on to visit the festival.

I don't think of armor and passive defense as being much a part of wuxia. I wrote a post on fashions as a suggestion to what different people might wear, and leather seems appropriate for a bandit or anyone who makes a good living by traveling. Active defenses made of cloth certainly exist, and battle scarves and weighted cloaks come to mind. These require training and skill and so are celebrated in wuxia; armor is instead a training wheel.

This is not to say you shouldn't have armor. The Imperial soldiers wear armor, and practice their own autocratic kung fu.

But I'm not sure what constitutes cloth armor so I can't be of much help.

VonDoom

Hmm. Good point. I have seen a few wuxia movies that showed heroic soldiers and generals wearing armor, but that's a different clique, even if they have similar skills. Thinking about it some more, I'm mostly looking for sturdier clothing, really, that affords a little protection -- like the layers European knights wore underneath heavier armor.

I think I found something, though: apparently this is a Mongolian Silk armor. It mostly helps with getting arrows out cleanly and affords some protection against poison getting into the bloodstream -- not entirely sure how the latter would work, admittedly. It was often worn beneath leather armor, so it fits pretty well what I had in mind.

Hello! It's been awhile!

I don't know if you're still willing to accept characters, or my character -- I know it's been ages since I last posted anything here, between a pet-crisis followed by getting sick myself, a busy time at work and a thorough lack of motivation to write after a game I put a lot of hopes into crashed, I … was absent for awhile. The good news is: my cat is healthy now, I'm recovered, feeling better and more motivated again.

I still really like the idea of this game and, whether you still are up for more characters are not, at least wanted to complete Liem's profile. Even if it's not my best.

Let me know and if the answer's a no -- well, there will be plenty more games on here in the future. There will be more opportunities to play together. :)

(Her looks are intended as a mix of Mongol and Ainu, though her image was drawn as a female turkish warrior by the artist, I think it works well for that purpose.)

名字 Name :  倒藪 林  Dàosǒu Liem (Bandit Den's Liem/Forest; Hokkien Chinese Variant of 'Lin')
功夫 Style :  Wudang's Xing Yi Quan (hand-to-hand), 'Shaolin Style ' (yanmaodao/goose-quill saber and guan dao/glaive) . Further details below.
五行 Element : Wood
喜歡 Ons : Fair competition, strength, dedication, people who remain true to themselves, rough play/playful roughness, fighting, having money, sharing money, polygamy
反感 Offs : Disloyalty, fickleness, bathroom stuff, unprovoked cruelty, cowardice, suffering civilians, greedy officials, poetry, anal

Note: Sexual character Ons and Offs that contradict my own Player On/Off entries don't mean I won't play them with her, just that she won't like it -- though of course she might be convinced otherwise.

高度 Height : 5'3''
个子 Build : slender frame, busty, powerful wiry muscles
描写 Description :
Bandit Den's Liem stands at the not particularly impressive height of 5'3'', but any inches she lacks in size she makes up in vibrant vitality: long, silky black hair runs free and wild just past her shoulders, shorter strands spill onto her face that, despite the slightly darker tan and lack of make-up that looks more at home on a worker, looks quite lovely. Not only her manner of clothes make her foreign roots obvious -- a combination of fur, leather and silk that just dares any high lords and ladies to sneer at it -- but also her eyes, which gaze out at the world in light blue color.

The slenderness of her form is deceptive. Her arms, legs, stomach, everything about her is well-trained and when she flexes her muscles, it all too quickly becomes obvious just how much strength she can exert. Like the wood-element, she is powerful and flexible -- warm, generous and in the spring of her life.

个性 Personality :
Like many of her fellow bandits, Liem has a quick temper and a wild streak that doesn't play along well for long with civilized society. Sure, she can reign herself in for awhile, but sooner or later she will feel the walls closing in on her and require release -- usually in the form of violence, drink, sex or all all those.

She is clever, practical, but not particularly book smart. Though she has received some education and knows proper etiquette, she usually chooses to defy it -- for her to show proper manners is either a very big sign of respect or simply means that whoever she is dealing with scares the hell out of her.

Liem has grown up with the thought that her comrades are her true family and as a result is very loyal to all she includes in that circle and values the same dedication in others, hating traitors above all.

As a lover, she is very passionate -- sometimes rough, sometimes tender -- and will fight for a beloved against all odds. Yet as of now she believes she could never settle for just one partner. The world is a big place and there are many that she takes a fancy to, whether man or woman -- which is not to say that she will sleep with just anyone, of course. Her standards are high and anyone who makes her feel lesser or who just can't answer her passions equally is quickly left behind.

传记 Story :
Liem was born into a bandit clan commonly known simly as 'Dàosǒu'. The Dàosǒu are a small tribe that came about when a small group from the Far East (originally immigrated to the area about two-hundred years ago) intermingled with locals. Their territory lies between Pai Sun and An Yung, just far enough from the Mu Rim garrison that they are left alone unless they make a bother of themselves -- of course, they also send the occasional tribute, which goes a long way to endear them to the officials.

As the daughter of their chief, Liem was well trained and even received some formal education as she matured, soon able to beat any of her brothers and sisters in combat.  Though the position is not one inherited by blood, she she was eventually chosen to take over from her father and has since led the clan successfully and with a strong -- if slightly warped -- sense of right and wrong, she has shaped them even more in the direction of 'righteous bandits'.

Though there have been numerous fights due to quick tempers, by and large the Dàosǒu stopped robbing and now instead demand taxes from those who pass through 'their' lands. In return, these people are assured safe passage and merchants may even find some business with the bandits. Another thing that makes them different from othe bandits is that if they end up with more than what they need, they share it with the common-folk.

功夫 Style : She learned the Wudang Style from her father, but lacked an aptitude for the alchemic arts that are part of the advanced techniques -- and suffered from the fact that the teachings had been diluted by a couple of generations of less than stellar teachers amongst their clan.

Being very adept at the physical side of the art, she took to enhancing her basic Xing Yi Quan techniques with weaponry, imitating the fast and hard strikes of Shaolin fighters she had witnessed and fought. As a result, her own combat style is a bit of a mess -- difficult to predict, highly aggressive, but unorthodox and full of openings. She is extremely effective against combatants of lesser skill or those who cannot adapt fast enough to exploit these, but suffers against more disciplined Wudang or Shaolin fighters.
Now this is the Law of the Jungle-
as old and as true as the sky;
And the Wolf that shall keep it may  prosper,
but the Wolf that shall break it must die.

-Rudyard Kipling, "The Law of the Jungle"
