John Carter Theme Song - Peter Gabriel - 07 My Body Is a Cage

I like this version better than the Arcade Fire version.

Canti Gregoriani "The Sound of Silence"

Okay, first off, nothing is going to beat the original Paul Simon version. However, I needed either a good big-band/swing version or a choir version for writing my book. That means that this is epic!
If you're searching the lines for a point, well you've probably missed it; there was never anything there in the first place.

The version Yes did of America (in 1972, but they had long been doing it live) is brilliant, on a par with the original but very different. Jon Anderson does a song you wouldn't think he had in him with total success, and Steve Howe's guitar solo in the latter half of the track conjures up highways, wayside landscapes, honking car horns and lots of people on the move: it's too great. I'm a big fan of both Paul Simon, S&G and Yes.

I really like Nouvelle Vague's covers, especially of Master and Servant

Master And Servant - Nouvelle Vague

And The Killing Moon

Nouvelle Vague - The Killing Moon

Also, I know this is blasphemy, but I love A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine, even more than the original Beatles version. It's darker, creating a ironic dissonance between lyrics and tone.

I don't really think of cover songs in terms of being 'better' than their original, but I love covers.  Here are a couple that I enjoy especially -- and I enjoy the originals just as much:

Groove Coverage's cover of Alice Cooper's Poison:
poison groove coverage

Vitamin String Quartet's cover of Paramore's crushcrushcrush:
The String Quartet Tribute To Paramore - Crushcrushcrush

Costanza's cover of Johnny Cash's God's Gonna Cut You Down:
Costanza - god's gonna cut you down

And finally, because someone posted Manson's Personal Jesus cover, I'll toss in
Johnny Cash's cover of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus:
Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus
Kiss your lover with that filthy mouth, you fuckin' monster.

The funniest ever Hendrix cover - though it's fair to say, you need to have heard the original, and most of us have of course. Without the background of how it "ought to sound" this wouldn't be so howlingly funny.

Dia Frampton's cover of Kanye's Heartless. :)

Since you mention it, I actually prefer The Fray's cover of the same. Though I would hardly make a big deal of either version.

Anyone else noticed the possible link between Kanye and the famed "K.West" sign in the cover pic of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust album? Now to make it even better, Kanye was born five years after the release of Ziggy, almost to a day, and what is the first song of Ziggy Stardust called...?  ;)

Hm... and the song is about the world ending in five years...  Or am I reading too much into it?

You're right! -and this would make Kanye (and not some London punk) the Antichrist!

(if we suppose that Five Years telescoped the beginning of the end time and the actual ending: when Kanye comes into the world this is the hidden sign of the final era beginning, in which The "Star-Man" K.West will be the Satanic Lord.)
