Elliquiy Security, part I

Elliquiy's time at Accelerated Web was not a bad one. The new server is faster, more reliable, and more customizable. However, there is something you do not see in that $50/month ($60/month when I purchased it) price tag and feature list for that host. Of every shared host I have seen, they were the most security-conscious by far. It is hard to fully express just how much I learned from them.

Not just because it would take awhile, but discussing the finer details of how Elliquiy is set up always bothers me - knowledge can be used against its giver. I also have a moral objection to throwing out technical details that I am not willing to make at least a courteous attempt at explaining. I hope that, if you are curious, you do not feel that I throw out random terms that hold no meaning without explanation. I am going to do my best to explain a lot of terms here, but if I fail and you are still curious, please feel free to ask.

This does not keep me from discussing concepts, things that a technically adept attacker would know, or someone who takes the time to read the public statements I have made so far, however. That still leaves quite a lot to talk about, so I am going to begin somewhat randomly. : )

Moving Pains

From apache's log:

[Wed Nov 19 07:11:16 2008] [warn] long lost child came home! (pid 5523)

Why we Moved

I get various hints at this question and I figured I would try to explain the technical details with more rigor. This has been a goal of mine for some time now, and honestly the main benefit can be expressed as 'liberation'. That is, having Elliquiy on a dedicated platform means that I have options that simply weren't available to me before.

Have you Voted?

Something many keen investors look for, when they evaluate a business startup, is whether or not the company is a one man (or woman) show, or if they have a partner on board. The reasoning ought to be fairly obvious - if someone cannot convince their own friends that they have a good idea, or worse, has no friends, it does not reflect well on that company. Even if neither of these issues are actually present, there is still a deep concern. For one, there is no obvious person with an emotional attachment to the company who can criticize potentially hazardous decisions.

Elliquiy is now the largest adult role playing forum

Anyone who has been to Big Boards knows that a forum-owner's e-penis is measured by their site's postcount. Today, Elliquiy passed Adult Adventurers as the largest role playing-oriented adult forum on the web, 882,431 posts on E to 881,820 on AA.

Zero-point energy, bullshit, and you

Someone just posted something about harnessing 'zero-point energy' on the forums and I felt I needed to say something. If you want the quick of it, you can just read the title. For the more detailed explanation of why most respectable people come to that conclusion, continue reading.

Random Stupidity I

So, on a random bit of curiosity, I tried to figure out how much milk a woman's breasts could produce and/or store for a given size. I have a thing about rendering girls with rather astronomical assets, and though I don't have a lactation fetish, I'm not opposed to it either. So naturally, I turned to Google, which was amazingly unhelpful about this question.

Surprise, the world is still here

People seem to be under the impression that simulating the conditions of the early Universe is a crowning achievement of mankind unrivaled by nature. I'll get to that in a bit, but first, I'd like to point out a pattern.

The Tevatron did not end the world.

Losing a Member

Today is CjaC's birthday.

Or rather, it would be, if she were still with us.

Children with Mod Powers

Darker Roleplay recently got hijacked. Fortunately the twerp involved did not have control of the domain name. I love my current moderation team, I really do, but, after Lilac has gone, there are some things I simply am not going to trust with another human, ever.

Well it's a start...

People will probably find the new layout to be a bit of a shock, but hopefully not too cluttered. Things will be changing a bit over the next month, but this is not what the next iteration of the forums is going to look like. I'm using Drupal here to host member blogs, public galleries, and provide a general front end for Elliquiy.
